In Puerto Rico there is a town where bobbin lace is still a bit of an industry: Moca, in the main island’s northwest. At the Puerto Rico Art Museum there’s a small theater, named after Raúl Juliá, and the stage’s front curtain is all done in bobbin lace… it is ginormous. All done by hand.
Some have numbers on it. Not those one, but my mom have a friend who was doibg bobbin lace and she was writting numbers on her bobbins, it helps her a lot.
@@priorattire hahahaha that made my day. If you want to enjoy some fellow not-so-good-at-cooking content, check out the chemist NileRed, he has a video about making the purest cookie, and it's very enjoyable.
I am just trying to sew a button on to an overcoat and I am having much more trouble keeping my one strand of thread on one needle straight. I am in awe of your ability to keep all those bobbins organized and not in a complete tangle!
In order to get more even lace you should push your pins in further. Also get more pins and let the lace be pinned for longer before removing. This will help the lace lay more flat and will give you more beautiful lace. (It is already pretty, just a little friendly advice. 😊). I have been bobbin lace making for over 14 years. ❤
I recently got into lace making but I am having trouble finding any historical patterns. Do you have any sources you can recommend or do you recreate your patterns by looking at existing lace?
Filming would have been better if the cardboard was dark ... but I guess it is easy enough to see with your eye. I wonder why lace is always white ... at least I havent seen coloured lace. Might be a good idea to have dark lace on a white/light dress.
Black lace did exist. You're less likely to see extant examples of it because the dyes that were used historically were not good for the preservation of the thread.

Wow - it’s incredible how you can keep track of the bobbins. Beautiful 🤍

No wonder lace was considered a status symbol back in the day. That's a lot of effort!
Wow! Is there anything you can't do? Very impressive, and beautiful.
