This is so positive. No humans should be working this disgusting job of sorting out garbage... if we can teach machines to do it, I think it will benefit the world as a whole, so those who work in those facilities can go find jobs elsewhere that are more comfortable. Plus, AI seems like a way better option and more efficient than human sorters.
Job is a job.. AI does not clean our sewers, pick up our trash cans, etc. Jobs like these aren’t a dream come true for most but pays the bill. It’s a hard working honest individual who choose to contribute to the society the best they can.
i had a job doing this once, it sucks, you spend all day staring at a belt with trash speeding by and it can make you motion sick, its smelly too. and you come home every night having to take a shower and blow a ton of dirty black gunk out of your nose as well. not to mention the warehouse you work in is very loud and can be cold in the winter. the place i worked at didnt allow people to wear headphones for listening to music which sucked so i went on amazon and bought ear muffs that attach to my hard hat so i could put my earbuds in and listen to music without anyone knowing which made my day a bit better.
@Infinite Worfare right ai alone isn't dangerous. They are made to di specific things. It'll only be dangerous when they combine certain ai and put them into robots. But we e all seen terminator black mirror and I robot so hopefully humans aren't that stupid to get that far.
Because all "AI dangers" come down to capitalism itself being a problem that needs a solution. The automation of work IS a GOOD thing, BECAUSE it automates jobs away. What, you think *people deserve to be working manual labour jobs that break their backs?* All work should, and in a just world will be, voluntary. The automation of labour will force us to rethink capitalism -- and, frankly, it will inevitably lead to revolution. Good. F--- capitalism. Socialists have been theorizing the inevitability of automation replacing jobs leading to a class crisis that forces socialist revolution. So, y'know, *good.* AI, abundance, post-scarcity, automation are all objectively good things and we should be celebrating them for how they can and will improve and free the human spirit, and free us from tedious, enslaving, and pointless work -- and from capitalist profit motives, eventually. We deserve a world where technology that can improve peoples lives *is used to improve peoples lives* without boundary or limitation, without "capital" stepping in the way to say "who pays for it? and why aren't we letting old, privileged white people accrue ALL of the profits anymore?"
People always talk about how their AI can make our lives better, but oftentimes they are underwhelming. But this is a realm in which the AIs have a huge inherent advantage over humans. I have a high hope that AI will solve a lot of issues related with garbages, turn them into a valuable resource, and save the planet in the process. It's a win-win-win.
Unfortunately they the enemy same as the guy who made them.... The materials in trash represent a potential money value. This profit incentive might be the factor that will ultimately drive and solve the recycling issue.
I wish someone (billionaire ) would develop a way to convert recycled plastics into a clean burning fuel that could replace gasoline and doesn't require alot of modifications with our current engines and make it cheap. It's a win-win for the environment and humanity. I know it's possible... the technology is probably already out there... but the gas companies are blocking it from happening.
This is excellent! This EXACT type of sorting can be applied to humans that might fight against the future AI army. “No threat” “No threat” “Threat. EXTERMINATE!” “No threat” Very effective and efficient.
When done correctly, compostable is awesome. However, compostable stuff tends to muck up recyclability. It's not clear that compostable packaging is workable as a broad solution.
Ive never understood why we pay to send so much plastic to China for recycling, where they make plastic crap we then pay to ship back and pay to buy again. All that money and those jobs should be staying in the US.
And then we have socialist revolution, as has been predicted for the past ~160 years. Finally. We deserve a world where technology that can be used to improve lives is used to do so, universally, for all, without limitation or boundary, without having to stop to ask "who pays for it?" because the parasitism of capital will be overcome, finally, by democratic, common ownership of all automated labour.
Garbage sorting for recycling is the perfect job for ROBOTS. A whole system of garbage sorting recycling and disposal for energy use, solar/wind powered, robots that can handle and neutralize toxic materials. Why are humans being exposed to hazardous waste like this? Robots should be doing THIS JOB.
Cool report. I like these kinds of tech news and the vid is short too which is great. AI will change everything. We need all the help we can get from science and technology.
As for me, let a robot or AI do this type of work. Just like what the lady says staffing is hard. She says "these are jobs that people are not clamoring for."
AI is a race to the bottom, but at least this is a race to the bottom of the recycle bin. I love it, and it's nice to see AI being used for something that's actually useful and will benefit humanity.
It's truly remarkable. However, it's the start of a solution we started by being so wasteful. We don't want to wash dishes so we're quick to drink from plastic bottles and eat off paper plates ( I included myself by saying "We"). It's convenient, but I'm constantly thinking about all the plastic forks, spoons, and bottles that get a one-time use. We need to do better. 😔
I think the push to sell AI is insanely outrageous and dangerous for the US economy. This also devalues the professionals with the skills and standards that work to better their work environment as well as others. Remember, we still haven't perfected driverless cars yet
This is going to help sorters and separation, but try to imagine doing this to all the places that need recycling and sorting. What we do is a drop in the bucket. We need to recycle all across the United States, and that’s Going to Require Billions. There are other possibilities for dealing with recyclables and trash, but that’s going to take a Lot of Money and Energy
@@rcrotorfreak Not exactly! There are some jobs AI can replace humans, especially repetitive jobs, but some jobs it can't. It will also help create jobs.

Nice to see some good news about AI finally..-
There’s been lots of good news coming from AI actually, it’s been helping detect brain tumors a lot faster and being using to create new medicines.
More people out of work and homeless ? How is that good news ?
This is groundbreaking!
It’s about time they teach computers to do useful things
Whatever, I'm going back to my cat videos.

I understand about the monotony but it's probably safer for you not to have the music on.
Why are we all of a sudden singing praises of AI after just having been warned about it's dangers.
Ai isn't dangerous. If ai replaces jobs then I can just play video games

AI is a tool. The people controlling it are the ones to worry about. Most of the people scared of AI are the types who are scared of anything new.
I think you can probably answer this question on your own.

If all packaging material for short term use was compostable, that would be even better.
When done correctly, compostable is awesome. However, compostable stuff tends to muck up recyclability. It's not clear that compostable packaging is workable as a broad solution.

Well your inluck because of this it will be cheaper to stay here, just probably gonna increase jobs for robots 😮
Because they can’t send containers empty to China, also China doesn’t want you trash anymore.
The problem could have been solved easily if people know how to sorting and recycling before dumping in bins.
AI can help with that big time. They can score the sorting and recycling done by people and reward them instantly.
10 years from now, the trash can and the recycling bin will be the same bin. The AI will just figure it out later.
Now there's a chance to train the staff on the new technology, give them new skills, etc... not just replace them.
We’re getting to a point where AI will do everything and we will be given just enough money to live on.
Nope. AI will then do the living for us. 😂

Scary it can reach where it came from. We need legislation on AI now. Start sending letters
Cool!
Shoot! I'll tell ya who doesn't recycle. My work place, the mall I shop at, and apartment complexes....
Well, it's not entirely true that robots don't get sick, robots can break, electricity fails, so they also need maintenance like humans.
True, but the maintenance is much more predictable. You can also easily add more redundancy with machines.
Bring on the AI. They can't f*ck up things more than us humans already have.
artificial intelligence is different than machine learning, or computational robotics, get that clear, but more advanced it all should.
