Step 1: have friends.
.... Fuck
Ethan Jensen Step 1. Look for a local games shop or search online.
Step 2. Ask around for a group to play with.
Games cons are usally good places to start if you find some of the smaller festivals.
There is a DnD like game called revolution virtual playspace on Steam. Then you can invite random people but not over to your house or theirs, but online.
The True Aniflex And if you don't have money you can use Roll20.net ;)
RaketenKuhGewehr Oh yeah I saw that one! I completely forgot about it though.
Ethan Jensen hahaha, that's exactly where my checklist ended
The most important things that this game seems to need are the terrains, buildings and scenescapes, but in reality, it is your imagination.
And having friends,
+Lorewalker Choo M. D. I would say that hte most important are the map and something to keep track of your equipment (a notepad, cards, whatever). The characters can be anything and everything else can be made up
+migueeeelet You don't need a map, just character sheets and the PHB.
PHB? I say a map so players know distance, obstacles in the way, etc. Else you'll have to play with a "I move from D5 to G5" style
+migueeeelet Yeah the Players Hand Book. You do not need a map whatsoever. I very rarely pull the map out. It's a theater of mind game. If you need a constant map, you're probably relying on combat too much to play your game and your roll playing rather than role playing.
mjmoore87
Hmh.
Well, it depends. If you play your RPG in a battle, you'll do better with a map. If it's mainly roaming towns and stuff, it's more optional.
I had a campaign where we used LEGO people as our miniatures.
If I start I might use lotr Lego people at the start
TheMstrpwnr lmao same. my friends and i used our lego kingdom pieces and we used the board for Risk as our map
TheMstrpwnr THAT IS A FANTASTIC IDEA THANKYOU
let's hear it for low-budget minis
Holy fucc
In 10 years or less D&D will be even more amazing when hologram tables become more mainstream.
dylan bellerose Become even more mainstream? Pretty sure those don't exist yet man, slow your role.
I think there is augmented reality though! you just have to look through your phone
dylan bellerose it would actually be cool if you would actually see the characters move and act base on what your saying or command, making the attacks immersive and cool looking, though it may take the imagination away sadly...
The Japanese invented a vertical 'tv' that projects upwards. Yes its a matter of time...
pffft! I did that today.. with Chewbacca.
Shame this stuff is dismissed as for "nerds" or "losers". It's actually pretty damn awesome with all the possibilities you can do with it
Trevor Phillips mmm I think society is slowly moving away from all this "only for nerds" thing. I rarely hear the word "nerd" anymore.
Well for those you can tell that Vin Diesel loves D&D
Eetu Lähteenmäki David Hayter, the voice behind the main protagonists in the Metal Gear Solid Saga, is also known to play D&D.
David Hayter is the most badass voice actor on earth
Trevor Phillips I used to be one of those people until I actually watched people play it. Now I want more friends so I can start playing, I can see why my Dad played D&D in college.
The biggest hurdle to overcome is finding a group that will meet more than once! I've seen many group fall apart from wishy-washy people who just want to dip their toes into the world of D&D.
Being in a group is a commitment. It's kinda like being in a long-term relationship.
KirKanos08 which is why best friends are good for it
Even best friends can be tough though, people are always busy/on different schedules.
The Dragon Between Podcast I recently played my first game and I really got into it, but the two other people there had also never played before and I don't know if they are too keen on playing again, any advice?
Rocky 713 just bum them
My D&D campaign The Ten Thousand Islands : Greeks and Vikings is open to new players via Discord ...
discord.gg/6JBRfAP
Now I just need friends :/
healingduck or kidnap younger relatives
there is a podcast of a guy who plays with hookers *****
healingduck Roll20.net looking for group and pick out the game type you want to play best of luck to you.
@Alec Carr sure yeah just go to the comic book store and start chatting up to strangers asking them if they want to play board game..
@@Stavol2Dual those poor kids
I love this. How to "start" playing D&D and then the guy goes into all these miniatures. We never used miniatures. They're cool, but they're certainly not needed to start playing D&D.
......lmao your not a good listener are you? -_-
Angry_Old_ _Man_Gamer lmao (see, I can act like a 5 year old too). Maybe you're not intelligent enough to understand what this guy said, but one of the ESSENTIALS he mentioned was the grid!!!!! Then he goes into his miniatures. This is NOT a video on how to play, but a video on what to buy, and this guy seems to think miniatures are a necessary item. Did I miss one second in this ten minute video of what to buy in the form of accessories where he said you don't need any of this shit?
Maybe you don't know the meaning of the word "essentials," which would mean "necessary" to play. We didn't need something to represent the characters, or a grid. THAT was my point. The essentials are the rules, and maybe some dice. That's it.
Blue Shard I know. That's what I said.
My group are the same; we just lounge around someone's front room and talk. As long as we've got somewhere to roll dice and write notes, we're good. :)
"Something to represent your characters, whether it be PAPER CUT OUTS or miniatures." That is what led to the miniatures to be talked about.
"I am an amzing adventurer, and you are just a peasant," lol, that's funny. You sold it well.
PC to console gamers
I mean really you don't need any of this stuff. Just download the Player's handbook, monster manual and dm's guide, buy some dice, get your friends together and use your imagination. You don't need a map, some miniatures or any terrain, you just need 3 pdf files, some dice and some friends. heck, you could even use online dice if you want! just have fun with it, and don't get bogged down by models, miniatures and the ridiculous amount of money you would have to spend
It does make it more fun.But you don't need it!
sure its alot of money, and ita not for every one, but remember, you are invesring in a proud memory that helped make bonds and empowered your and who ever was envolved with your game's imagination. As a grown person, I wish my parents invested a smidget of money and time here as they did paying people to do shit for them. I saw we were all at a loss.
I agree. Me and my friends are playing D&D for a couple months now, and we haven't paid a dollar; you can find every D&D book online (in pdf form), and there are some amazing dice apps out there, also you don't really need a map, I think that imagination is much better because it lest imagination flow.
A lot of mechanics function on positioning, so at least a grid to track that does matter. But you don't need anything fancy for that, just some paper.
We should all be far more angry about this unimaginative approach. May as well play monopoly if you're gonna do it like this. I'm livid!
I really really hope that you guys will do another D&D campaign. I enjoyed watching it so much and it was so much more entertaining than any other of the sort you might find on youtube. The story was great and Brandon, D, and Niko were all great players when it came to helping make the game enjoyable. I just hope to see more of it. :)
Super cheap alternative to minys... Bottle caps. When I was first starting out I had about 150 some odd water bottle caps for small creatures and 15 milk caps for large creatures... and so on. All you have to do is write a letter on them in marker and describe the monster.
ReadySetTech Genius, or play Doh
+ReadySetTech You are brilliant.
I'm already collecting bottle caps, for a different reason tho
falloutfish scorpion that’ll be 200 caps please
@@funguscrusader5509 I have 15 coca cola bottlecaps
As a newcomer, this taught me absolutely nothing on how to play. It was more of a list of things I should buy rather then a "how to".
"A how to start..." the title didn't mislead me at all.
thats really all it seemed to be. Really all you need is a Players Handbook, a set of dice, pencil and paper, and some people to play with.
You dont have to use battle grids but its usually more enjoyable that way, any grid will do, and anything can be used in place of miniatures- dice, bottle caps, coins and so on.
A lot of game/comic book/ trading card shops usually let D&D groups gather in their venue certain days, and sometimes even have sign up sheets for groups that are looking for new players. Though you end up playing with complete strangers, and sometimes they arent the easiest people to spend a couple hours sitting at a table with.
How to play D&D in 3 words: Have an imagination.
If those 3 words dont do it for you then read the books they have more words in them ;)
I'm the DM for a campaign in my group and one thing I was struggling with was the rules, like what are the stats? how to set up stats? when to use stats? do I have to keep track of all the stats every player has? etc etc. Although my questions aren't answered directly in the video, I learned a lot by just watching how he conducted a game. I suppose D&D is one of those games where you just get better as you experience it.
Look up the "How to Play DnD" playlist on the channel "Never Stop Learning". It's long, but it goes over everything you really need to know
This was a good guide to starting D&D. For anyone that is curious about starting up but don't know about the cost, there are starter sets they sell too that are only 20 dollars and work for 4-6 players to just test to see if it is right for you. It comes with a basic rulebook for levels 1-5, an adventure for the DM to run through, and some dice to get everyone going. They sell em at Walmart too, so you could one day just say "let's try D&D." It's easier than ever to get into it now that Wizard's made it more accessible to the masses.
sounds like fun. I'd like to see fully animated hololens augmented reality D&D
chills, it's almost like you guys knew i wanted to start playing D&D. The coincidences are strong with me today
MitchieDBBC Baader-Meinhof phenomenon
Would it be acceptable to use LEGO minifigures for D&D?
DragonaxFilms I've used pennies in place of monsters before. I've also used marble chess pieces I had lying around., both as enemies and as statues or coffins. D&D is about imagination, you don't even need minis, or walls, or maps. You can do whatever you want.
That what I use ;.;
+DragonaxFilms very acceptable
+Feraligatr Star Wars D&D
+DragonaxFilms it is totally acceptable, plus if you have the parts you can make a lot of different characters.
you can also do this with legos! That what i did
Pipdockan Same here!
Pipdockan How many times I've bought sets for the only purpose of filling space in my games, or when I think "That would make for a great town/dungeon/etc thing!", that is amazing, also with all the new chess and miniatures being released by lego (the random bags) it has come to a point where it is amazing to use for the D&D games.
Pipdockan With minifigs? Genius...
That's what I'm doing with my friends. I have a ton of Legos from when I was younger.
Using Lego's, especially for minifigs, works great, I agree!!
You started out great, but way too much emphasis on miniatures.
True. I would only use minis during combat or sneaking
well to be fair they bring out a better visual and immersion on a character your team approaches i dont wanna imagine every character i come across i mean if thats the case we might as well not have a board at all and only have dice and cards
JamesBondRPG I've been playing for two years, never used a mini once
Miniatures are what make it for me I love them
You dont NEED minis but having them can definitely add to the experience, I've used monopoly peices on grid paper before.
*BEHOLD THE FEARSOME POWER OF MY THIMBLE!*
When I was first dragged into D&D all we had was a simple notebook of grids, pencils, and our own drawn-out character sheets traced on blank papers, and our DM was an author who acted as a storyteller to paint the scenes in our mind and the grid pages were for mechanical reference / hard-placement of where everyone is from a birdseye view of all our little dots on the grid (Lines / maps drawn around them).
You don't even need the books, just read from online sources. The internet, paper, pencils, that's all you really need if you seriously want to start playing but are poor/broke. (Online dice rollers).
Kate Clementine Agreed, from an outsiders perspective D&D seems expensive and time consuming, but all you really need is the basic rules, a list of character stats and dice or something to the same effect.
Simon May You definitely don't need every book but I HIGHLY recommend that the dm gets the dungeon master guide. And atleast one player has the player handbook (or dm can have it and share it with the players.) AFter that everything else is optional.
demonickilla32 The problem is that the dm also needs a Player's Handbook (possibly more than a pc does). The fact that they are expensive means that I, as the dm, have to tell everyone prices and rules.
+Ryan Baillie 90% of the time you only need one... For your whole group... Have a Sesson zero, just to make characters
demonickilla32 Internet. Google. SRDs. Just saying, everything is out there. You don't -need- the physical copies to play. If everyone has a mobile/tablet/laptop, everyone can have all the tools/books.
After watching your first campaign, then watching this video I got so emotional, this convinced me to take the plunge and follow these rough instructions. Been playing every other weekend for little over a year now! Thank you sir.
Dont forget Roll20.net !
Bump
James Dreger double bump
Quadruple bump. Did I do it right?
Of coarse you don't NEED all these things to play D&D but tbh a game of D&D without miniatures and at least some sort of grid or terrain is just roleplaying. Which is fine but definitely not the full D&D experience.
Except for the part where the full D&D experience was some guys with dice and imagination...
To many of us, D&D IS roleplaying.
i was wondering where they got the towns folk cause I've been needing some and can't find them
I've played D&D without miniatures or a grid just fine, and it helps fuel my imagination more that with miniatures or a grid, but that's just me
Well it is a Role Playing Game after all... Some people prefer it old school just using their imagination when it comes to how the battle field looks like, how the big bad dragon and the castle look etc. When you can imagine these things, grids and miniatures aren't just useless but also a needlessly annoying distraction. It it only when the DM is really bad at describing things that there's a need for toys all over the table or when there's that one really dim witted player that just won't get where the enemy is unless they can see little versions of themselves and the monster. Even then, some meeple or even coins will do.
All Me and my friends first used were some notebooks and dice. We didn't even have miniatures or grids. I would dm most of the time( I was the only writer of our group. lol), and I would just paint a picture of the scene and they would act it out in game, then we would basically just get a good idea of how large the location is and go from there. It's a simple but still a fun way to play.
Sam doesn't show them here but the cardboard cutouts he was talking about are called Pathfinder Pawns. A set of around 200(ish) goes for about $30, so it's a much more cost effective way to get tons of variety. Maybe not as cool as really nice minis but they still work perfectly. (plus imho the artists for Pathfinder have a much more interesting and engaging style than the artists WOTC hired for 5e)
I hope you guys do another D&D adventure in the future! :)
Justin Carson Well they've done 3 so far so maybe a fourth is coming. (2 Years late.)
Im starting with DnD. A few friends of mine play it already and to not lag too much behind I started watching campaings here on UA-cam and listen to the High Rollers Podcast on spotify. I have learned alot by watchibg different campaigns
My mom _is_ a badass assassin!
The official Wizards of the Coast D&D channel here on youtube held a few round table discussions with GMs and the question of how to get players started came up. One of them said: give them an armor class and a d20. Everything else about your character can be decided on the fly.
Ideally, of course, it's better to have at least a set of ability scores, the usual strength/constitution/etc stuff, but the armor class is enough to get started with if rolling 4d6 and taking the highest three results six times is too daunting for a newbie.
Also, for new players, the 5th edition player's guide and basic rules for DMs have been made available on the WotC website. It's pared down quite a bit; for example, most of the classes have three variants and the freebie handbook only contains one, but you and your friends could easily grab the two free PDFs and start playing in a couple hours.
Personally, for 4th edition I relied heavily on tokens and accurate maps I drew by hand on quad paper. I used pennies for 1-hit point minions. 5th edition however, I did away with maps and tokens entirely. My first campaign went well, even though all I had was a partial world map to provide some context, with the entire campaign taking place in less than a square centimeter on the large map.
As long as you have the battlegrounds in your head as the DM and can accurately describe what's happening to your players, you don't need any table dressing at all. I spent a lot of time and money making popsicle and toothpick furniture for my 4th edition games, but I've discovered it's not necessary and actually slows the game down a lot. But that's a matter of taste. I do love to see all the stuff the DMCraft channel makes with cheap materials.
Now I know how to play Jenga.
Thanks guys!
Shew Moo you can use jenga in Dread
I’m confused on your joke.
Miniatures and a grid make movement and combat easy to understand and grasp as a new player. Yes you can play without them but during combat when you have a lot of enemies it's extremely difficult to keep track of for the DM and players.
I personally use Lego minifigs instead of miniatures when I play D&D :D
This video is exactly what got me into DnD. Thank you, Node.
Have you ever thought about making a video explaining at least the basics of being a DM? It's something I've always wanted to try but it seems like you have to know a lot and be able to improv a lot. Anyone here know of any good tips, videos, websites, etc that could help out?
geekandsundry.com/tips-for-the-novice-dungeon-master-story-edition/
I want to start playing d&d with a group of friends and we're all new. just reading the starter set rules and looking at the player feels daunting enough, before going through the very big player handbook and dm guide. your videos are very nice and well-made, I'd like to see a much more basic version of it for new starters.
Look up Matt Colville here on youtube. He has great tips for dm'ing, and other stuff to.
This video seem to rely way too much on miniatures, terrain and all. Just get together, use the books and some dice, and have fun :)
After the you've played the starter set, get a Players handbook, a Dungeon masters guide and a Monster Manual (in the order mentioned). That should give you everything you need to create your own adventures. Don't worry about making mistakes in the rules. The most important thing is that you and your friends have fun and create an epic story for yourselves. You'll learn the rules soon enough. :)
My friends and I haven't been playing long but so far we've been using theatre of mind where we don't need miniatures or a grid.
Sean Parenti play it though roll20.net
Sean Parenti the best way.
I lack the only thing you really need to play this game
Friends
Tristan Verbruggen search if there is clubs in your school. If yes then there is a chance there already is a D&D club. If there isn’t already a D&D club the make one!
As for minis, i bought a bag of little cheap plastic dinosaurs and we each painted them up to personalize them, so we had everything we needed in that regard for under $5. Worked nicely. You can also use bottle caps, bullets or any other small thing you can tell apart. Recycling can be fun.
This only goes into the aspects of hardware, which is optional. D&D 5th-edition in particular is tending more to "Theater of the Mind" play where you don't illustrate anything with props.
A better title would be How to Gear Up for Playing D&D, since it doesn't say anything about how to play itself.
I was lucky with my introduction to D&D in that I had brothers to play with and a square patterned carpet for a grid. Miniatures are the easiest thing to wing from random things lying around and if you have a grid building environments and structures is as easy as laying down pens, cutlery or whatever. Really just getting started you don't need anything item wise as you will be able to find a stand in in your house somewhere.
I dunno if you've seen them or not but a lot of people are putting televisions flat facing up on a table. No need to pay for maps any more.
I must be old; my immediate mental image was of a CRT telly lying on its back. Somehow, I don't think that'd work so well... :p
Heroes and Halfwits?
No need to pay for maps anymore (pays for TV)
The first time I played DnD was with a bridge deck of cards and a dungeon master, it was the best game I have ever played in my life.
This video was so incredibly helpful! Thank you!!
My friend plays D&D and I've really wanted to play it with him or play my own games with friends, but never been able to get good info as to how to play it and I just wanted to say this was really helpful and fun, thx.
This is really helpful Sam thanks for the video
Commercialization for dnd is crazy
I've been playing D&D for years and have spent almost no money. You can handmade a ton of stuff, just use your imagination. Also, I like the comment about simply setting a scene for your characters. I recently did a campaign where the players got shipwrecked on an island. I had encounters and story set up all over the island and just let them run around and do what they wanted. It was really fun.
An additional tip: Get into your characters. The reason why this was so fun to watch was because of how active everyone was in talking to people, acting out things, etc. It makes D&D way more fun, and turns a bunch of dice rolling into a huge party basically.
Don't get discouraged, I sucked when I first started, and so does everyone who's just starting out. But now, it's one of my favorite things to do with my friends.
Good luck!! :)
Step 1:get some actual friends to play with me
I have been thinking about starting D&D for a while now and this video really gave me the final drops of inspiration. Thanks!

Thank you!!! So helpful, I know that these D&D vids don't get as many views as other videos on the channel, i.e airsoft, and certain video games. However, I think that these D&D vids are something you guys find fun, and are clearly passionate about. However many views they get. Don't loose sight of that passion, keep up the great work!!!
You could also try Legos too!
i love node playing d and d i started playing path finder which is similar and me and my friends just cant stop ... and if u are worried to play d and d because u r worried that u may be seen as a nerd then don't worried it is some of the most fun i have ever had

Imagine the amount of battlemats stained and ruined because of this video :(
please make more campaigns. I keep looking on UA-cam but I can't find a single episode that is entertaining as you guys are. the set up is perfect the dm was magical and it felt real. please please make a new series!
I'll be real simple when I say this: please do another campaign
Been playing roll 20 with my cousins and has been the most fun I've had in a while.
I made my own rules and mechanics, the story is set in the world of The Elder Scrolls. There a races, classes and areas, everything is on a detailed map that lights up at night. We have so much fun, we play D&D but’s it’s just super modified.
I've found with 5th that the friends I play with prefer not using a grid. Requires a bit more on the fly work as a DM keeping the battles in my mind (or sketched on something) but it also keeps the players more invested in what their characters want to do rather than how to game the system.
Tabletop Simulator on Steam. I hook my laptop to a TV and slide tables in front and have everything I could ever want to create scenes in full 3-D to save/load at any time for my players. Been using it for D&D ever since.
Where can I find townsfolk minis like that?
Some other people have already said stuff similar but medieval legos are super great and versatile with buildings and people. There are even medieval lego chess sets that come with lego grids and soldiers that my friends and I use.
I've been looking for the villagers that node uses. Where exactly can I find them

When I played 2nd edition in the 90s we never once used models and grids. It was all talked through. My DM may draw some maps on grid paper to show us where we were but thats it. It seems that since 3rd edition came out, the models have become more essential.
I want to start playing soo bad! I have thought about it for years. I have been listening to tabletop champions podcast and it really helps me get through my boring shifts.
I've been playing for two years, and own 8 5th edition books and DM my own campaign.
Why am I watching this?
Because I'm addicted
Please do a new campaign
You do give a lot of good info here. One issue I have is you present Minis as essential, There are lots of people that play theater of the mind. in 23 years of DMing I have used minis 2 times. I only use battle maps of large battles, eg. the Party vs 120 goblins. 98% of the time we play in our minds. Having said that I love minis, I own over 500 of them and have painted about 190 of them, and I am sculpting minis for my party's PCs and NPCs. I just feel that a mini moving 12 spaces forward on a grid, can never compete with my players imaginations. Kind of like a book being better than the move of the same story.
The only other thing I disagree with on is when you say to "off load as much work as possible to your players." I try my best to keep their minds on their PC's 5 senses, and off the rules and numbers.
I do think you have put together an excellent how to get started video for your gaming style, and I do think it would be helpful with getting new people into D&D.
All but one of my friends and I have never played D&D before, but they nominated me to be the DM. I know the basic rules as I've (briefly) played some other tabletop games, but this will certainly be a learning experience. I'm really excited to get into the game as I love the unique, creative, and endless aspect of it. I've been searching for some DIY ideas to make the game really special for us all, and I just wanted to say that your maps are gorgeous (as in, I may have gasped aloud a few times when I saw them. Wow).
Man, I remember my first time playing D&D. All we had was the core rulebook, dice and paper. Instead of minis, we drew and redrew the character's positions on graph paper. Even though I've since amassed a slew of gear, sometimes I'll still run games without a map or character sheets. It helps that my group is mostly actor-types.
I’ve been playing a couple years and let me tell you guys, you don’t need minis at first all you need is some graph paper and character sheets, dice and pencils with two binders taped together for a dm screen. I didn’t have friends to play with at first so I played online games using roll20 until I realized my local comic store had adventurers league. Before that I played with random and my cousin and siblings mainly randos until adventurers league.
@The Grid: I find that one of the many beautiful things about DnD 5th Ed is the reliance on the mind's theatre, therefore foregoing the need to actually play on a grid.
Wizards also makes a great starter box that's only 20$! It has literally everything to run a really basic adventure, and if you can get your friends to play that, they'll play anything
I came here because Stranger Things

I'm really hopeing to see a new D&D campaign, I don't have the time anymore to play myself, but watching it can be just as good and sometimes better than playing myself.
What ever you do, keep it up!
D&D is my favorite game I started when I was 12 only using some lord of the rings Lego, notebooks and a chess board. It was not the full experience but it still got me wanting more D&D my bros and I split the money to buy dice and the handbooks.
D&D 10/10 it isn't just for nerds try it out but get a good storyline.
Wow you have a lot of props! The only props and DND items I have right now is a mat, and 4 character figurines. Thank you from the tips on where to buy trees and stuff. I am really excited about playing and would love to start an adventure.you should release a video about your DND prop inventory, PLEASE MAKE ANOTHER ADVENTURE
For Models I tend to use my old Warhammer miniatures or ones from the Talisman board game. I make a lot of my own scenery, such as colouring toilet brushes to make trees, and using things like hose pipes and broken rulers work great for lots of scenarios.
Also, everyone looking for Good Scenery should also check out Miniature Scenery (online) and Forge World.
Great video man, I love playing D&D with maps, grids, minis, full scale figures and buildings, that is who I am and what I like.
But being honest, if you think about some old school stuff, and now with D&D Next, they make it so that you do not need any of that stuff.
I have learned, specially when it comes to teaching new players and starting a fresh campaign is the Player's Handbook, character sheets and some dice (preferably multiple sets, one for each player). Everything else, really is just to add to the world. If you can tell a good story you do not need anything else.
(I am only up to 3:03 on this video, so if you address it later, sorry to toss this out like this)
Been playing AD&D since 3.5 came out, recently jumped over to 5e.
Even though miniatures, terrain and even a grid are not mandatory they do have their place on the table.
Ever since I started adding "real" furniture, torches, boxes and ledges to the table my players started using these elements to their advantage. More so then if I just discribed them.
Check out the UA-cam video's by DMScotty, The DMG and Wylock. These three make their own terrain out of simple materials and can bring your game to life for a lot less money than buying everything.
I'm doing a campaign on Tabletop Simulator, totally digital and free apart from the game itself. Playing with people from around the world and definitely recommend it!
I made floor tiles out of old manila file folders with a ruler pencil and x-acto. knife. Then ink them after I decide what I want them to look like. Dice can be used for miniatures. d6s. for 6 monsters. Each one with a different number up.
One note in regards to battle mats (i.e. the tan grid mat by Chessex mentioned in the video), DO NOT use DRY erase markers on the mat; you will ruin it. Instead you have to use WET erase markers (aka projector pens, or Vis a Vis markers).
Really good video! I would also suggest two or three bluetooth speakers. Ok, so that raises the cost, but the DM can create a sound set list of a pub, or forest, spooky sounds etc.
I would also suggest maybe a aroma sticks that add to the effect they are in another world.
Thanks a ton for this! I've always wanted to play, but always thought I needed to find someone who already knew how to DM to play...this is great news! Can you do a video breaking down DM'ing?
Good to see people still make video to help out new players.
Been playing for about a year now, and we only use minatures for spatial reference during combat. We have a paper grid, and generally use whatever avalable for mins, often warhammer mins, since one guy plays warhammer. If we use warhammer mins they do not nececarily have to reflect the character in any way.
There needs to be another Node quest!! Please make this happen, I loved Call of the Wild so much.
ha, my friends and i just got the rules online and got a couple of character sheets , still fun though:)
hey node peoples, thanks for supporting the hobby. great videos looks like a ton of fun
We never had this stuff in the 90s. I played 3.5 in grade school. All we has was the 3 starter books, bag of dice, character sheets, pencils and most importantly, our imaginations. No paper maps and tokens for character placement or anything.
We play without any stuff. :) Dice, DM's notes, screen and some paper to draw rough guides for the maps! Would love to paint my own figurines and stuff to use when we have the money and space.
Gonna start my 1st D&D game on Saturday, your videos are awesome!
One thing to mention about this is if you don't want to invest the money into buying minatures, grids, etc. or lets say that you don't have many friends that are interested in dnd that there is a website called Roll20 which allows you to use a virtual table top, you can build custom maps run games and even join games all with a massive online community. Its pretty easy to pickup and use and its free (for the most part) only downside is that dont expect to get into a game you apply for right away, its best to apply for several games since there are a lot of other players out there looking for groups.
I’ve been playing with small torn off pieces of paper to use as my characters. Our dungeon master will draw a quick map of our location and he’d cover up the map with paper if we are in a cave or somewhere dark and we can’t see. Imagination is so much fun in my opinion because then you can literally do what ever you want in the game and imagine your bad ass character performing these actions. I might buy a character mini to represent my character but I’d definitely let the world, environment, other characters and battles be imagination. It’s been amazing so far. Especially when your dungeon master is an actor so he’s very good at acting out things, creating stories and being very immersive. Definitely play as your character and do what your character would do in situations. It’s more fun if you don’t meta game either. Like if I know something about an enemy but my character doesn’t. I should play as if my character doesn’t know. Instead of putting my outside knowledge into the game. Acting is very fun, incorporating some improv and acting makes it much more fun.
After seeing the awesome setup you have there, the first thing I thought of was all the amazing things Hololens (and just AR in general) could do for this game.
You can start out using coins, jelly beans or anything else to aid in visualizing PC vs enemy positions on the game map.
he miniatures are not required. Paper marked off in 1 inch squares helps... also not required. The minis or other representations are to help avoid confusion about positioning. Originally we did not use them at all.
if only i had friends to play dnd with. like im tempted to find node, meet them and say, "please teach me the awesome world that is dungeons and dragons." +node
