This looks like a game a parent would make for their kids so they don't have to chop all the wood themselves.
Mom's the winner here.

@Kamil S you have never splitted wood, right?
@Kamil S I am carpenter. I can't just give you advice it's more complicated to just write it here. It's experience not power (as many people think)
@Kamil S ok. Thank for calm comment. It's about experience and skills. It's complicated to write it down. Best way is to show you how to do so

What if you fell, cut and split your own firewood? Does it warm you four times? I am a forester, I even warm myself for my grandchildren's firewood :D
Work smart, not hard. It's not about hitting the same spot on the log with every swing. It's about hitting the RIGHT spot. They were already tired after only a few logs because of incorrect form. repeatedly hacking away at the dead center of the log while wasting energy . Start your swings on the edge of the log and work your way towards the middle. It will split much easier.
Sincerely
A retired carpenter with arthritis who can't swing an axe anymore so he watches other people on UA-cam do it : )
Agreed. Also, don't swing a maul like an axe. Keep it square to your body, raise it up through the middle of your body, and then come down with your whole body weight into it as well as strength. I have won many a ring the bell contest at a fair with this technique.
Agreed and I'd add, don't split the log directly on the floor. Put it on an other log you'll have a much better time splitting them. (but I guess the video was not so much about teaching how about to split wood than on about showing muscles :) )
yes this lacked true know how
@@soldupre1552 i find that splitting on the floor is fine but hard on axe if you put the log up too high you are loosing splitting power ......
Hit one edge then go for the opposite edge. And go perpendicular to the knots. Don’t fight them.

Dad wins! I remember when I was 6 or 7 years old and my dad asked if I wanted pilot lessons. It was about 0 degrees out, I got dressed up. He was by the wood pile he split. He picked up a piece of wood and piled it on the stack he had going he says ‘take a piece and pile it, got it?’
Pile-it lessons lmao
Was 100% rooting for the Duke here!
Ditto
Certainly, and we learned today that 20 years of experience is worth about 20 pounds of muscle when splitting wood. My 70 year old grandfather would be done with that lineup before I got to the 4th log, and I'm 33 (and not exactly inexperienced at splitting wood.) There are some skills that just get better with time.
@Andy My other grandfather didn't have so much of a physical strength feat, but he could pound a nail in with 2 hits at ANY angle you could think of. Hanging one handed off of a ladder holding the hammer upside down through a piece of aluminum siding, no problem. And my dad can dig a ditch fast enough to make your head spin (I had to buy a backhoe to keep up.)
Funny thing is in a gym I can out-lift all 3 of them in pretty much any angle you want to go, and I've always been great at carrying bricks and things like that, so I might be able to carry the cement, but I highly doubt I'll be alive at 80 let alone able to work that hard (the trend so far is a life-altering car accident, my fault or no about every 10 years.)
When it comes to strength, endurance or anything that has to do with manliness, dad always wins.
ua-cam.com/video/W6kd2FF9x4g/v-deo.html
Yep. Dad always wins.
Technically the first log he split only in three peices so he hasn't won yet

This is a shout out to the dad. Good job sir.
Being a father of 2 sons myself I was laughing watching this. I was a 5’8” 200lb concrete construction worker for many years. Screeding and raking Crete is an excellent workout. And being the owner and a bit of a perfectionist, I did the majority of the work myself.
At 16 my oldest was taller and bigger than me by a lot. Then the younger boy was acting 10’ tall and bullet proof, when at 15 we left the doctors, the kid was a centimetre 🙄 taller than me.
Both my sons are 6’+ and big, but I always could show them up (even if it was going to kill me😉) when we’d do construction or landscaping projects (or splitting wood at the cabin).
I’ve retired since then and put on quite the gut.
You're older now and allowed that privilege enjoy.

Derrick c. It’s about technique
Now this is the type of training we try to duplicate in the gym - somehow it just doesn't compare
Try hitting a tractor tyre with a sledge hammer it’s not the same but the closest I can think
That's the truth - once the coats come off you can literally visually see the difference between muscles made BY chopping wood and those you BUILT to hopefully chop wood. Gloves. Sure. OKAY LITTLE MILLIE ;-)
To emulate wood chopping you need draw resistance not spring back, like from a tire.

In any case, since I'm a hyperpolymath I just had the image fly into my head of a butter churn with filled with oobleck instead of sweet sweet cow cream
But the masturbatory jokes would NEVER end, so let's just say if you've filled a raft with one of those double action pumps that my new exercise equipment might look a bit familiar to you. Since there are a LOT of sculling type teams in PDX, I think I can also build some rowing trainers that basically react like if you could literally make water heavier to work out with it.

I used to watch these competitions between craftsmen of different ages on Norwegian television years ago. The older guys almost always won over the younger guys. The younger guys looked like they where working faster and had more energy, but the older guys simply worked with more precision and skill which made them finish quicker most of the time. It made you really appreciate skill, because it didn't look like the older dudes where doing very much, yet somehow they just got everything done much faster than the younger dudes.
There is no substitute for experience or skill.

I agree with you. I am way out of shape but I think I could have split these all way more efficiently than the two sons because I do this all summer and most of it is shitty knotted up wood.
Depends on types of wood and the number of knots for sure.
Yes definitely. When you have the required strenght you don't need more. You need accuracy and experience.
Like swinging a tennis racket. Not about how hard you hit it but momentum, where and how you hit it
Also endurance for work, as opposed to gym work. There's no comparison between 8 hours of labor vs 1 to 3 hours of gym time doing repetitive efficient movement. Nothing is straight forward in work like it is in the gym

lets not kill the old man!
most bales are half that weight lol
I was rootin’ for the dad. Nicely done guys!
Nothing beats experience, great vid
Couple things:
For logs this size.
1) dont bring the axe all the way behind your head because then you're wasting energy swinging the axe upward instead of just down onto the wood.
2) Do not hit the same spot over and over again. Hit across the diameter of the wood so your hits form a straight light across the middle of the face of the log. Hitting the same place means the rest of the log is still completely in tact and keeps the log together longer.
3) there is a balance between how hard you swing versus the number of swings per minute you do. Harder is not always better. A log is very tough. You will not split it in one swing. Conserving energy by using proper technique and getting more hits in the right spots let's you keep up a good pace and weaken the entire log faster. Proper technique is bringing the axe head up above your head but never behind it and making the swing more of an up and down motion, not an arcing motion. This also allows you to be more accurate.
I would add that on a larger log, aim for the 1/3 mark, not the middle as it splits easier. Rotate 1/4 turn and whack at the 1/3 spot again. You'll probably get 6 pieces out of the big ones.
These guys can split wood, but they're not that good at it. Guessing they have a log splitter now or haven't done it in a while.
in addition to that 4) sometimes when you can't split the piece from one side it help if you turn it upside down and hit from the other side. The "blade" has to find that sweet spot in the wood piece where the fibers run in a straight line from top to almost buttom. That's why some logs are so easy to split
Have you ever used an axe?
Thanks for the advise no one was looking for
im gonna remember that, thx
Growing up, my dad and I used to have log splitting contests as well. I always approached it like in rocky IV also lol

“They didn’t say how big the quarters have to be”. That’s not how maths works lol
