Yes they are hand axes for ocasional wood chopping...Mostly for wood rounds that have been split down in forths..A double bitted axe is what I would chop a tree down with....a very sharp one.... :)
Yeah that's because they are boys axes or pack axes depending on where you're from. They have a 26ish inch handle and like a 2 pound head. Not what a huge guy should use to chop a tree. Making it much harder to get the job done

There is a definitely a method to cutting down a tree, and the 1st step is making sure that you have a sharp ax.
I think abe Lincoln said " if I was given 4 hours to cut a tree, I would spend 3 hours sharpening my axe"
The trick is actually to cut up and down to break bigger pieces. Then move around and repeat

@@thepope2412 Yes, but it should also take under and hour to chop, so basically Lincoln said 4 hours was too much and he would spend "doing" the part that it is easier to slack off and not have people notice it. Or he intended to hand work the axe to sharp with the poor quality tools of his time...
Daishar but still 3 hours is way too much sharpening time, at that point you're either going to an austically sharp and polished edge or your just ruining the axe by grinding away unnecessary amounts of metal. Even with medieval technology grinding an axe shouldn't take that log.

How does Brian find jeans that fit him
Custom or a plus size store. There have been a couplenof his vlogs where he has gone to a store that has his size.
He shops at bigger and taller
He's the same height as me with a similar frame, he has more muscle mass than me obviously, but I have to shop at big and tall stores in order to find anything that fits.
He's had videos where he's gone to DXL and got clothes there and had them tailored to fit him better.
You gotta check out Shaw strength channel on youtube and see him shop. It's pretty ridiculous!lol Some of the biggest sizes still couldn't fit him well.
Im 180 lbs and these guys would destroy me but at least i know i can chop down a tree 10 times faster than them lol

From someone who has chopped a lot of wood over the years, I see 3 basic errors.
I won't comment on the sharpness of the axe, because I can't check it through a screen.
1: Technique. Neither one of them is chopping at optimal height, or with proper form. Easiest to get a downward diagonal around waist height, that way the weight of the axe is helping to drive it deeper. Then, you take an upswing that will intersect with your initial cut and knock out a chip. Brian is going too low to get an effective upswing, and Nick is going straight horizontal, not letting the weight of the axe help him.
2: Positioning. Look at which way the tree is leaning and at the slope of the ground. It looks fairly level, and the trees look fairly straight, but we have a very limited field of view. You want to start taking cuts from the low side until you're at least 1/3 of the way through. That encourages it to fall that direction. Then, move 180° and start cutting the high side. When you work in circles, cutting from every side, you don't know which direction it's gonna fall. That's dangerous.
3: They're cutting live wood. The greener it is, the harder it is to cut, and it doesn't get any greener than when it's still alive.
This right here! Work smarter not harder. Unless you have to throw kegs through football uprights :D
The "technique" displayed was terrible. 10 minutes with a pro and these guys would have been knocking chips out. It would have been safer for them and more impressive.
I would have been happier to see you in the video lol. Whats the idea that the strongest man is in the video, if you can cut it in like 1/3 of the time he took.

I mean its not like they do it for a living lol. Its more so they just cut down a tree with alot of strength, even more with a improper axe to do so
I just love the relationship these guys have built throughout the episodes I’ve seen. Starting from really competitive group of strong individuals to dudes who just trying to hang and have a little fun.

Actually axe sharpening is different than knife sharpening. The idea is to have a chipping edge not a sticking edge. If the bevel is too steep or acute, you get a stick, if too obtuse, it bounces.

Nick kept hitting the same spot more frequently then Brian which also helped him win the challenge, his experience definitely helped him here
Nick lost the bet bc he hit it in middle and not close to ground you idoit Brian is the winner bc he hit it in the right spot nick didnt unless he wants to get hurt bad.
@@Pharaohdefowl I think nick won easily. Brian still had a lot of wood to cut, and nick's part of trunk wasn't that much thicker. I don't know how if it is harder to hit with axe if spot is low but I think it would just give axe more momentum...

Yeah, you got to have a sharp axe, and you can't hit it straight, you have to hit it at a slant, then the opposite direction to knock a bigger piece off. I've cut vine maple which is a very hard wood and this technique works well.

@@lacedrp5616 here in Australia it is one of the common woods to run into. And the rest aren't much better. It's easier to take a saw than an axe some places.

lol yea except there accuracy is terrible, there technique is terrible, really the only thing you need for doing this is a good attitude, endurance, and accuracy, and a sharp axe, and preferably a felling axe, these axes are tiny, being a big guy doesn't really help you with doing these kinds of things. that axe is a tiny axe for a normal person anyway

That is about what one of my teachers always jokes about. She is the oldest teacher in my school and on history lessons she often says how she remembers stuff that "happened in her childhood" couple hundred years ago, stuff related to what she is teaching. It is always hilarious 😂
1: cut lower it absorbs less force into wobble.
2: cut diagonally then horizontally
@The foam Farmer I like a flat stump when I'm done, so I usually use straight swings on the bottom, and vertical ones to rip out chunks. Seems to work for me, and you have a nice 'stool' to sit on if you need a break when you're done!
