Testing an anti-grazing muzzle from 'Munch-N-Done' with Henry the greedy horse

- Munch-N-Done is a little company in the U.S. which specialises in designing and making muzzles for horses to stop them grazing during rides. When I was looking for a muzzle that would be easy to put on, light-weight and fit over a riding bridle, I approached Munch-N-Done, and they offered to let me test their muzzle - thank you!
It definitely does its job - it took very little for Henry to get used to the unusual thing on his nose - he can still breathe as normal, and it doesn't hinder him in any other way than not be able to put food into his mouth. The velcro fastening straps are extra long, so once the neccessary length is established, the ends could just be cut off to make it look neater.
All in all, thumbs up and well done to Munch-N-Done, we surely will use this muzzle on our rides out into the fields!

This is great, I'll pass the website on to my local riding school. They do hacking and unfortunately some of the horses have learnt to grab at garden plants as they pass! They go through a narrow village to the green to canter. Unfortunately the horses can tell when someone inexperienced is riding them, and they take full advantage! it got so bad in the summer that one of the horses ate someone's rose bush before it could be urged to move on, and another time an ambulance had to stop and the driver get out to help! Fortunately wasn't on an emergency and was good natured about the horse blocking the lane to eat shrubbery! They will be delighted to find this simple solution. Horses are so strong.
Oh how funny, thanks for sharing those stories! I see that with children who come here to ride - I might convince the horse that I want to ride without snack stops but the horses know too well that the children are often not experienced or determined enough! Hoewever nice and gentle my horses are, when it comes to food, they can be so inconsiderate!!!

I can only imagine, how frustrating it must be, trying to fight with him over that issue. Glad, he adjusted to the muzzle so quickly. Looks like a neat and comfortable solution for both horse and rider.
No point trying to fight with Henry, he has the upper hand in terms of neck muscle strength, definitely!

Oh yes, Henry knows what he wants, but he can also be the most patient relaxed gentleman when there is no food involved!

This video gave me hope that trail riding with a sturdy, grazing-focused, assertive horse could be less of a battle and more fun. It also helped me understand what to expect when the horse first has the Munch-N-Done on. I enjoyed the voice over. I have a mustang who came to me with the assumption that the purpose of trail riding, at walk and trot, was so that he could sample grass along the way. Not just an occasional reaching down when standing still, he would abruptly stop from a trot and start to graze if the grass looked especially good. I found that I was never able to use a soft rein when on trail because he would grab the reins from my hands and graze. I ended up needing the 'deep muzzle" version which is what it looks like Henry has. thank you for this video, it is very helpful.

I don't know much about horses and their needs etc. But that doesn't mean that it isn't all very interesting. I like learning about their behaviors and their likes and dislikes. It looks like Much and Done® know what they're doing. It looks like they know horses. I wonder if Donkeys behave the same way? Well it goes without saying that I really enjoyed this episode Sandra!
Donkeys are just the same, even worse maybe!!! If I turn my back to Nell our therapy donkey in a nursing home, she walks over to the window sill and starts eating the house plants!!!

That's wonderful! My riding-kids are having the same problems with the horses on the gras riding arena and I was wracking my brain what to do about it, because the horses know they are stronger and it gets very frustrating for the kids. Thank you!
I once was on a 3-day ride with a woman who had taught her horse not to graze when wearing his bridle. So when we had breaks, she had to take the bridle off and put a halter on, otherwise he wouldn’t eat.

That's a cool trick to teach a horse. Only that mine are of a certain personality that would remember and co-oprate for about a minute, or whilst I'd keep reminding them and praising them, and then they'd just put their heads down anyways!
Can he drink with this on? Interesting solution. That is one advantage to riding western, you can hook the reins over the horn and they simply cannot get their head down.
Yes, he can, it is not very tight and he would be able to slurp water no problem.

Well, Henry didn't look too happy at first. But I think he'll learn fast the difference between riding- and eating time. :)
He'll be fine! Not having the option to eat will keep his mind on enjoying his time with me more hopefully!

You could try an anti grazing rein , just a bit of rope or strap that stops him reaching down, google for a picture. It might be a lot easier for both of you.
Good idea, but I actually have tried a variety of different reins and contraptions and was amazed at the enormous strength in Henry's neck and shoulders - no bother for him to break various attachments to just get to those few blades of grass. That's why I arrived at the muzzle....
Isn't it dangerous to prevent the horse to put its head down? In case he stumbles he needs to move its head for balance..
Yes, you are quite right. That's the problem with those anti-grazing reins, that they wont allow the horse to stretch his neck fully ever - like you say, quite dangerous when they need to use their head to catch their balance.
