I'm a freelance film Director based in the UK and I made this film. I found the way the company approached this mining project very inspiring and I hope this comes across in the film. I interviewed a lot of people who have nothing to do with ArcelorMittal (NGOs & local Liberians) and only got one negative comment from a villager living near the railway who didn't like the dust! That in itself is impressive, compared to similar films I've made. Delighted to see its on UA-cam now.
This is the progress I like to see. I hope Liberia continues to improve (both the villages and Monrovia). Thanks ArcelorMittal for helping out our country.
Lived in Liberia in the 70’s as a teenager. First at LAC then moved to Bong Mine. Spent a lot of time at Nimba on school trips. I used to have math lessons with the Liberian kids as the teacher was better! Amazing country with more amazing people. Liberian know how to party 🎉
One theme was consistent among the midlevel expats; they seemed to imply that they wanted to work themselves out of a job - by training the Liberians. That speaks volumes about the company's corporate ethos. Bravo Zulu, Mittal
I would like to know what is still left of the LAMCO project that started 1956. There were the first traces there was iron that was perhapse woth mining. Liberia together with the USA hired swedish geologist from LKAB to excavete if there was enough to start an mine. In the 60´s staff from lkab and grängesberg was hired to teach how to drill and takeout the iron from the ore. They also tought liberans how ro run an steel plant. I wonder if any of that still is in use. Or was lamco shut down. I had un uncle who worked as one of the geologs from lkavb who talked about it when hi was alive.
Development like this just give me hope that one day Liberia will be as its once was. If corrupt countries like Nigeria and Ghana can reach a milestone in their development I have no doubt that Liberia can do the same.
I was the Railway Area Manager for that project manging the rehabilitation and construction , and can assure you in all my time there I spent out on visits to sites the workforce were happy and enjoyed the work and also could see the benefits to the country and the communities , been gone there now for about 2 and half years but again when I left things were looking positive and project was in operation .I have many happy memories from those days there .
all glory be to god for guiding the motherland. thank god for the president that have the good intession of africa in heart . we abroad are with you all . may god bless and protect you all. liberia and all african continent . we are with you all in prayers . and we love you all
African countries are always being exploited by these big companies. Building railway lines will employ few people during construction. After that they have no more jobs. Acerlor Mittal was taking care of its own interests building railroads from the mine to the ports to move the raw materials. After that they start shipping the iron ores and other minerals to their manufacturing plants outside Liberia. They could build an Iron and Steel plants which will benefit the country of Liberia but NO. They will pollute the ground , water and the vegetation and leave the country desolate after a while. If you notice they sugar-coated all the benefits to Liberia but never say a WORD about the greater benefit to the Mittal Company. Those are the typical MO - Modus Operandi of the oppressors and exploiters. Does Firestone ring a bell ? Liberian and African countries need to stop being CORRUPT and serve the needs of their people. These companies are not your FRIENDS. They are in your countries for one purpose only - EXPLOITATION of the people. Africa is the richest continent in terms of all mineral resources. PERIOD.
stevo Stevo But if our leaders are not willing to take control and lead and build what do one expect. At least they are doing something. For 20 years everything was at a standstill. The government did nothing. Thank God companies came back. Firestone and ArceloMittal.
Valerie Jallah Valerie, I agree with you totally that they are doing something. But the corrupt politicians do not have the interest of the people in mind. They only think about themselves. The Arcelor Mittal Mining Company has one goal in mind, to get the iron ore and other minerals out of the country. The owners of the resources, the Liberian people, get little or nothing. Mr. Mittal is from India and he was insulting the Liberians. The unemployment rate in India is no better than in Liberia. The unemployment rate in India is over 80 per cent and he knew that. That is why Indians are scattered all over the world looking for jobs. Name any country, they are in there.
That is partially correct. The thing is I don't know if anyone thinks about the possibility of exporting value added products as opposed to raw materials. If Liberia were to export manufactured steel rather than iron ore pellets, it would be a revenue multiplier.
In a concession a government releases public land through a lease agreement to an outside entity for the exploitation of the resources on the land. In exchange the entity is contractually obligated to make periodic royalty or lease payments for the use of the land to the government
Have the opportunity presented by train also very excited about this wogons want the best you know Liberian is one of the poorest countries in the world infact subservient
Liberia is not poor, if Liberia was poor you would not be there doing what you are doing. So just take what you when there in peace ✌. One love peace am black and white.
So what did Arcelor do for the country and people exactly? Is there a highway built (like China did for Kenya) between Nimba to Buchanan port (even if Arcelor didn't want to spend money on a pure charity project to build highway between Nimba to Monrovia, but at least to Buchanan should be built)? Does the railway also have passenger trains, speed trains like (China built for Kenya from Mombasa to Nairobi)?
Who's paying for the infrastructure and whose workers are they shipping in? Seems to me the Chinese and other Asian countries have way too much impact on what goes on in Lib.
This is the old Lamco Mine, Mt Nimba was destroyed back in the '70's. Mt. Nimba, the highest Mt. peak in Liberia, was turned into a pit. The Mt. Nimba range is a "Strict Nature Reserve" a UNESCO World Heritage Centre...yet, miners are allowed to operate here, go figure...
So can ArcelorMittal add commercial railroad lines to benefit the commercial sectors of Liberia. The former president and governments didn't take into account the accessibility of the liberian citizenry. Our natural resources are taken to other countries to building there county's infrastructures, Liberia is not benefiting from it's resources. It's time to demand from our leaders who are signatures to these typs of agreements. The time is now!!!
What a load of B.S. LAMCO had an efficient mining operation there. Bong Mine also operated a decent mine, and even Mano River ran a half decent operation. But what happened to them and all the equipment? The Liberian government stood by and watched the complete infrastructure collapse, even the rubber plantations were not immune. Now they sing the same story,......its for the people and the workers,...hollow laughter.:;(
SINGING AND PRAISING GOD IS A PART OF OUR LIVELIHOOD, AND WE'RE GRACIOUS TO BE ALIVE TO SEE THE RESTORATION, OF THIS GOD GIVEN LAND AND ITS PEOPLE, MAY PEACE PREVAIL ALWAYS IN JESUS NAME.
freaking criminals....can't even improve the local workers life conditions. talking bout compensating people if their homes are closer to the operating site......
During FY2014/2015 the Ministry of Lands and Mines received $52.34 million U.S. from mining concessionaires of which ArcelorMittal is the predominant operator in the country. So, the suggestion that they are somehow complicit in theft is unsubstantiated
My country is not poor, we are very rich, you, but you business partner are distributors of lies against my country, but I will say in this manner that we ourselves should begin to say the truth about who we are to the international world, so that people out there will truly know our value. We are bless, we are great, we lived by God's comment. We don't care how they feel about us, Liberia is all we have. God bless my mother land.
I believe that the majority of the views are valid. However, unless we're in the shoes the the Liberian people, whose to say what we would do out of desperation. 70 - 80 of the people in Liberia are unemployed and the rate of iliteracy is very high as well. My heart goes out to them. When it's all said and done, the issues with Liberia and any other country always starts at the top. If not allowed by there own government, those other countries would not be able to come in and take from this land and its people. Please pray for them. People truly perish for a lack of Knowledge. God bless!

I'm Prince M Nagbe Jr, an agriculturist living and working in Liberia. Thanks for the video

Our government is the problem.

Most African countries aren't sending their raw materials overseas anymore. So let us try to learn from our friends
