Every night after the rest of the family was asleep my cat would jump onto my lap for her bed-time grooming session. I used a louse comb to catch her daily quota of fleas. We lived in the country and there was a lot of wildlife in our area, so she would always have a new batch of fleas every day. I was very careful to get every flea, every night, but the next evening she would have another half dozen fleas. She loved this attention, and I got great pleasure from helping her to stay clean. We had a very powerful bond.
Empty boxes, plain strings, plastic rings from water bottle, hazelnut in shell to swat around those are top favorites. Another favorite past time - pinching Qtips and throwing under bed or fridge. Pricey heating pad for winter - mehhh😮 fish toy that moves - mehhh 😮 ball that rolls - no thank you 🤔 Confusing...
Our cats get all the stimuli mentioned and they seem very happy. They come to me for pets when they want it. Mostly they sit on me for the extra warmth during the cool months. They get a few treats as a noon time snacks and no more. They have great exercise when Daddy comes home and runs with them using feather toys.
Cats are as different as people, perhaps more so. We had one mostly white cat, Wally, who did not allow us to touch him, no exceptions. He was personable and liked discussing life with us but was afraid of getting dirty. Most immaculate cat ever!
My little January ( a rescued stray ) LOVES to have his chin lightly rubbed. He jumps into my lap, purrs and leans his head back so I can give his little chin a rub. That makes him very happy. The usual spots are sensitive to gentle touch as well: the cheeks, forehead and back of the neck.
Our 1½ year old Sasha loves ear, cheek, chest and back off the neck rubs the most. Head scratches too a lot of times. Some body pop pets. She loves getting brushed too when my daughter does it but not when I do it. Clothe snake on an extendable wand is her favorite toy. My daughter and I both have on in our rooms so we can play with her while we are in bed before going to sleep to tire both us and Sasha out. No middle of the night running around the house 😊. She does have a box with other cat toys in it for playing with by herself. A scratching post in every room in the apartment except the kitchen and my daughter's bathroom. She has her goofy little rituals she does when we are in different rooms and we love each and every one of them. Makes us giggle or smile and I think that's why she does them.
I've had several cats that are calmed by just a rapid jiggle squeeze using your thumb and forefinger when they are frightened, nervous or anxious about something when carrying them. I guess it's like a communication to them saying it's OK, I'm here, don't worry about it.
One of my late kitties, Spitfire, would sit in the sink under a drip. He liked it! He also liked to "fish" in the kiddie pool. He'd dip his whole front leg into the shallow pool to get at a bug that had fallen in. No fear of water at all. He was born on Chappaquiddick Island, to an old family of "Chappy Cats", so maybe fishing was in his DNA or something.
Mine likes being picked up a lot, TV, leftover food, TV, flea combing, the toilet flushed after she uses it, open window in warm weather, sleeping under covers together, paper bags, carrier rides, car rides. Strangers. Eating on the windowsill.
My kitties love boxes. I get a new box from Costco every time I go there so that they have a new type of box to explore. I have about six wand toys for them, all different. I have four different cat stands for them to choose from. They have individual boxes with feather pillows to sleep on as well as a bed with many cushy blankets on it in the guest room. I have an oblong 4' carpet that one kitty jumps on and I drag her around the living room floor like a magic carpet ride! 😂 We have a lot of fun!😅
I've never owned a cat in my lifetime. I enjoy watching them do their thing however and I will always interact with my friends cats and at every opportunity. Perhaps some day when I am grown up and responsible, I will have one (I am 56 years old).
My 9 months old kitten never hides she always want to know where I am she likes being petted but absolutely loves 2 play every morning and before bad especially I have trained my car wit positive reinforcement like treats she plays fetch gives me her paw while standing on a back legs she rolls over she acts more like a dog than my dog
Oh my def. Sounds like my girl she is 7 months 1/2 mane coon she's been w my dog who thinks he's a person since she was 6 weeks and they met each other 2 weeks prior because I got her from my neighbor. She acts just like him I have to hold her while I walk him 😔 🤣 people wave and tell them hi ! When they pass us. She will not tolerate outside otherwise. They have become best friends. He tossed things and she catches them. When I throw toys she can catch better than him 🤣

We have had many cats over the years. I wonder if all of your suggestions are really valid. We adopted a rescue cat four months ago. She seems to be an odd eyed Khao Manee, about 3 years old and our only cat at this time. Even though we have put cardboard boxes in every room, she doesn't use any of them. There are kitty beds and cardboard scratchers for her in every room of the house, but she rarely uses any of the beds, but uses ALL of the scratchers. Her favorite place to sleep seems to be in our laps. We brush her several times a week, but after the first couple of weeks we have not been getting any fur at all. She isn't overtly affectionate, but rather seeks to be in our presence whenever she is awake. She sits with us at all meals, watches TV with us and sleeps on the bed at night with us. We are careful to clean her box every day - keeping it in an out of the way location for privacy, and no where near where she eats (also in a secure private location). Last night my wife fell asleep sitting up in bed because she didn't want to disturb her sleeping in her lap, and stayed in that position until around 2:00 am.
My kitty likes to lay in the closet in the carpeted floor back in the bathroom. It's the farthest away from the living room. It's her little quiet place to retreat to. She's not really into boxes that much
My cat hides under the bed, or in different pockets in the closet or wherever, and stalks me, then lunges out & attacks my ankles when I walk by. Sometimes I change directions & she’s right behind me getting ready to attack, and then she darts off and hides
Screened windows... We are up on the fifth floor and pigeons will walk on the window sills outside. My wife and I came home one time to find the screen of a bedroom window knocked out all the way up to just before the top edge. Our cat Max was lying down on the carpet on the other side of the bedroom. I wondered how scarry it had gotten for him when he leapt at the screen so I picked him up and walked towards the window. About five feet from the window he started struggling to get down. It had been close. I would suggest keeping the window itself partly closed with no more than a few inches space so that your cat can't punch through the screen, especially if you live in an apartment where the window sill is an attractive place for pigeons to perch and possibly tempt your cat to an untimely demise.
When it comes to petting and grooming sessions, cats have an expiration date. In other words, they like it until they don't, and then it is good to stop right away. 😊
You forgot something with #4: Observing Movement. You listed for things observed - a leaf blowing outside, a flying insect, or a light reflection on the wall. There is another thing our cat tracks rather well: ghosts. We know we have a ghost kitty, in our house. Often our cat will suddenly jump up from where he's laying or sleeping, flip around and, after checking the area out for a second, or two, swipe at the air where his butt had just been and then take off like a rocket! Just last night he was laying on a high shelf on the other side of the passthrough window from our kitchen, just kind of laying there, playing with the carpet we tacked on to give him grip, just pretty much being his normal, playful self. Suddenly, he looked up and behind where I was standing in the kitchen, ears laid back flat, and just stared. Not wanting to get in the way of anything or anyone that may be behind me, I moved calmly, yet quickly to the other end of the half wall that divides our dining room from the lower living room and stood there. After just a couple moments (maybe about 5 seconds, or so), our cat quickly stood up, hackles raised, leapt over the ledge of the passthrough and onto the cabinet we use for trash and recycling, down the cat stairs we placed there for him, around the corner of the half wall and between it and my legs, down the stairs leading to the living room, and then on down the next flight of stairs leading to the garage/laundry/basement landing, where he basically just flipped out. Yeah...we have ghosts and our cat definitely sees and tracks them, even interacting with them on a constant basis.👻🤨
My luv bug angel kitty visits me, even 24 years later. Many a times I feel paws jumping on the bed. I thought it's my Izzy 🐈⬛ my babe with 💚💚 eyes. I look for her, but she is on her kitty tower sleeping. I am sure it is my lovey dovey sweet kitty 🐈 visiting me from over the rainbow 😢 I love 💕 her still, so many years later...

Before I get out of bed, I feel (what I think is my cat, Hector,) jumps on the bottom of the bed and walks up by my head, circling around it. When I reach out to scratch his little head nobody is there. His name was Cory. He had diabetes and was 17 yo 💕🌈
Scratching post is not for sharpening claws, but to break of the old sharp cuticle to reveal the new. If that does not happen the claw will grow into the foot pads.
My tuxedo boy cat loves a good cardboard box! He has a "special" one at the moment and gets quite upset if I move it. He loves his scratching post too. If we forget to play with him he soon reminds us by stalking and trilling, and he's putty in my hands at the first sign of a tasty treat. Pretty much everything in this video holds true with him and every other cat I've ever been owned by. This may all seem like common sense to humans who are already in tune with their kitties, but I think it should be compulsory viewing for anyone who's not familiar with cats or even scared of them. There is always logic behind what they do, but it's cat logic so you just have to put yourself in their paws to understand.
Trust me when I say, "Do NOT buy those water fountains." They recycle the bacteria from the saliva of your cat and your car will re-ingest it. The bacteria also forms inside the water fountain, causing black goop to slowly form. The cat will unknowingly ingest that as well, causing stomach problems like Puking and gaging. These fountains require weekly cleaning. Yes they have a filter but they are often useless to stop any bacteria from forming in the Water Fountain. I have since thrown it away and bought a new water server/container that keeps the fresh water separate from the bad water. It's super easy to maintain and fill. The charge for it also lasts 6 months so you don't need to keep it constantly running unlike the old Water fountain. My cats gut health has improved ten fold.
I keep water bowl and change water everyday. My babe loved to drink from fountain, but it was hard to get it clean every little corner, I had to buy different size brushes. It had gooey yucky build up. I threw water fountain away. Now my kitty has ceramic water bowl, and I change water every morning. Rinse everyday, wash with baking soda once a week, rinse with boiling water to sanitize after washing
mine love boxes, they have posh beds but prefer an old box and a blanket, Miriam my youngest cat likes hiding places as she is a feral rescue, she loves to be brushed.
I was feeling my cat too much kibble. She got a UTI. She drinks out of a fountain because it is big, not necessarily because the water is flowing. It stopped working shortly after I got it. I would recommend to any cat owner to use a bigger bowl. My cat doesn't like the stainless steel. Those were likely intended for dogs
I had a cat that was terrified by the rustling sound of a plastic bag. In fact, I instructed my pet sitter to use this fear to prevent the cat from bolting out the front door. It worked every time
"Studies" fail to include the fact that they are primarily of not exclusively studying domestic cats that were either born in a cardboard box or moved into one immediately after birth for nursing and the fact that cardboard has a very distinct smell.
I stopped at the first one. Cats don't like boxes because they can hide in them. They like the feel of the cardboard. My cat will sit on a flattened cardboard box because it is comfy. It has nothing to do with hiding. She does the same thing with newspapers.
My little old man was the same way in his younger years. I made up a game called "mouse under the covers." I put my hand under a blanket (made sure it's thick enough to protect your hand) and move it around like a live mouse. He loved it, stalking and pouncing, clawing and growling. Try this! Your kitty may love it, too!

This person's cat is unusual and the person probably has learned how to pet it without aggravating those body whiskers so the cat trusts them.
One thing you didn’t talk about which is necessary is that most cat treats are crap and they should not be given to the cats. It’s very hard to find high-quality good for them treats. I would check through the Internet and even your vet before giving them any kind of treat.

None of these mean you should stop petting your cat! Aside from that, most of the rationale given for these "scientifically" determined statements are true. Did they take a survey or did the cats answer questionnaires? Did the cats agree on what they wanted or why or was there some divergence? Were there double blind studies? Do you know how science actually works?

You literally have no idea what cats are thinking, and you can't possibly know their dreams are helping integrate the day's lessons. At the end, you claim, "they view brushing as a ritual that brings well-being." How the actual hell do you know that? Those ideas are straight out of human Psychological theory, and are likely true, but you are stating them as facts. Please, don't. Very few people actually can "hear" even a word or whatever from other humans' thoughts, and maybe an animal now and then. We haven't gotten to X-Men powers yet.

I have since thrown it away and bought a new water server/container that keeps the fresh water separate from the bad water. It's super easy to maintain and fill. The charge for it also lasts 6 months so you don't need to keep it constantly running unlike the old Water fountain. My cats gut health has improved ten fold.

I keep water bowl and change water everyday. My babe loved to drink from fountain, but it was hard to get it clean every little corner, I had to buy different size brushes. It had gooey yucky build up. I threw water fountain away. Now my kitty has ceramic water bowl, and I change water every morning. Rinse everyday, wash with baking soda once a week, rinse with boiling water to sanitize after washing

I was feeling my cat too much kibble. She got a UTI. She drinks out of a fountain because it is big, not necessarily because the water is flowing. It stopped working shortly after I got it. I would recommend to any cat owner to use a bigger bowl. My cat doesn't like the stainless steel. Those were likely intended for dogs

This person's cat is unusual and the person probably has learned how to pet it without aggravating those body whiskers so the cat trusts them.
One thing you didn’t talk about which is necessary is that most cat treats are crap and they should not be given to the cats. It’s very hard to find high-quality good for them treats. I would check through the Internet and even your vet before giving them any kind of treat.

None of these mean you should stop petting your cat! Aside from that, most of the rationale given for these "scientifically" determined statements are true. Did they take a survey or did the cats answer questionnaires? Did the cats agree on what they wanted or why or was there some divergence? Were there double blind studies? Do you know how science actually works?
