- www.durbansurfski.com POV footage of launching at Tinley Manor beach on KZN North coast of South Africa. This was the start of the Da Real Downwind 50km race back to Durban. Wind was 25 Knots NE and swells between 2 and 2.5 m with a very short period. To be honest I fell out due to a mistake and not the surf size, should have done better.
The swells look brutal out there. Even with consistent speed, they seem to slow the paddlers down quite a lot! hope your surfski was not damaged bru!
Great effort that was some scary stuff! I dont think I would've braved those swells.
The same happened to me but my leash broke. It was a triathlon race from then on :D (unfortunately, my gopro3 cam was lost too)
I see you kept the relaxed grip on the paddle throughout. Just didn't turn & paddle into that final wave. That said, I'm not sure I would have coped out there. We don't get such big waves in Johannesburg at VLC.
+Bearing Vision Howsit, thanks for the feed back. Co-incidentally I am in JHB as I write this! Yup made a few mistakes, biggest one being hesitation.
Come join us Tuesday night for our 10km TT @ Germiston Lake. Best Water in Jo'burg. Had a few hairy moments in my K1 this morning. Wind was pumping.
Seems like the guys psyched each other out and you all stopped in the zone? The double had the right idea, went for it through a gap, couldn't work out why you were back-paddling which got you out of alignment at the critical moment.
Hi Mark, thanks for the comment. The impact zone that day was over 100m wide which the camera does not really pick up. So while it looks like the surf in front of us is not too bad, deeper in it was crazy. When you are sitting alongside some of the best big water surfski paddlers on the planet, and they are waiting (or swimming) you know it's gnarly. Lots of mistakes made that day though. I should have gone for it, but had allowed myself to drift too far back and then I spotted a wave that made me hesitate, and hesitation is devastation. The double was paddled by one of the best DW's we have and one of the best in the surf, they nailed it! PS Hit the subscribe button. Trying to get over the 1000 subscriber mark.
Hesitated a bit there, that's when doubt sets in. Had to give it horns & go for it like the guys on the double.
Great footage. I agree, mistake! You could have gone a bit sooner. Looked like fun.
Ah, good run..!
Where were the 2m waves?
Were you able to catch up with your ski?
Why were they lagging in the break zone. You got to just plow through that shit or this is what happens.
If only it were that easy. I don’t think there is a human alive who could muscle their way through 2m hard breaking waves with howling onshore conditions. For sure that approach could work in cleaner or smaller conditions. The paddlers in the video are some of the very best surf paddlers in the world. When u see guys of that caliber picking their moment you know conditions are full on. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Consider subscribing?
You were the one there and would know best when to make the run for the outside. I been there on a kayak before and it can get sketchy for a variety reasons. I just always found it best to wait for last wave of the set and then hit it for the outside works best for me. Probably because I dont know any better.

That's what I was taught, "just keep paddling", however this must have been a big day and per the other comments the size is hard to comprehend in the video. Obviously tough day out, although I must admit, even I as a beginner have never wanted to back paddle in surf or actually thought it was a thing. Might need better understanding of big surf management, i.e. ask someone who knows more than me. On a day like this it may have been coffee and spectate for me. At least you were put there, did you finish the race?
2 meters? As in 2 meter high waves ? 4:39 was the biggest wave I saw, which was probably just 3.5 ft (maybe 3-4ft), or ~1 meter.
alextheskaterdude07 Really? Someone goes to the trouble of making and posting a video for all to enjoy and your go to is to tear it apart? Nonetheless thanks for watching. Maybe we can share a paddle someday and discuss wave height over a beer afterwards.
are you familiar with how the waves look from a kayaker point of view ? go pros flatten the sea, even more when you're sitting just on the surface. 1m waves are enough to hide the horizon, look just 3 seconds after, 4:42 at the ski just in front, the wave is twice his size...
I agree with the comments about pov REALLY changing things. But I have to agree with things not being that size. Not trying to drag anyone down. I clicked this just cause the title said 2m. It's a rough day. Totally get how you just got turned and hit when not ready. But I agree those are 3-4 ft waves. Not 6-7 ft. That's a huge difference.
@@sshhhhhh 3-4ft Hawaiian=2m California waves
@@Robmobius excellent and polite answer
Wheres yr leash
Hi Mal, thanks for your comment. ts not a good idea to wear a leash in large surf unless there is a very strong offshore wind. The risk for personal injury with a leash and large surf is too high. Once out through the waves its time to connect the leash as now you are too far out to safely swim back to the beach.
@@Robmobius man i go out everyday.usually downwind, and always wear my leash.ive had a few times whithout it,came off and watched my v10 do flips over and over.i had to swim 2km to get back onshore.and we all know how much that suks.do you put one on once your thru the breakers?
Are you on facebook? I love keeping in touch with fellow paddlers.
@@DeadHeadmusic69 For sure - Check out the FB Pages - Durbansurfski, SA Surfski.com and The Freedom Paddle - you can catch me on any of those. Each have a corresponding website as well
You should of paddled at the end you would’ve got out but you just waited
