  • Waggler Float Fishing - Tell Tale Shot
    The tell tale shot of a waggler float rig is the most important shot on the rig. With the correct size and position, the tell tale shot can make a big difference to your catch. This film deals only with the tell tale shot, explaining how important this one shot is when waggler fishing.

      Amateur Angling had a great day, thanks. took both my kids in the end, they both caught a few small roach each so they're now hooked lol. what we realised pretty quickly was the reels are pretty poor. we picked up 7ft basic (£10) rods from go outdoors. the rods are perfect for what they need but the reels are poorly made. can you recommend a reel?

    • @AmateurAngling
      @AmateurAngling  6 років тому

      I can only suggest you look for a size 25 (2500) or 30 (3000) reel which is a general purpose size. Expect to spend £20 to £30, but over £50 for better quality. Hope this helps.

    Thank you for these videos, I am returning to angling after about 20 years and was never really very good and we didn't have UA-cam back then...lol. I'm finding your videos really easy to follow and you explain things very well. Many fishing videos are more about plugging expensive gear for more advanced anglers so it's really nice to see someone explaining the basics really well to us newbies.

    Excellent information in your videos. Particularly suited to the newer angler, but with some gems for the more experienced too.
    When I used to do tests like this, I went to the extreme of having an aquarium and watching fish take the bait and watch the result on the tackle. One would be surprised on how many fish could take the bait fully into their mouths and give no indication at all.

    Thanks a lot very useful information. After 55 yrs of not fishing since aged 11 I never realised how much there is to long. Been out three times so far but only caught fish first time so I am guessing I am not getting depth right. Can I ask do I need to add weight to a loaded waggler and go through the process you describe. Thanks again.

    • @AmateurAngling
      @AmateurAngling  6 років тому +3

      Plumb the depth with only the float stops holding the float in place. This time of year, set the depth so that the last four inches of line are laying on the bottom. Usually loaded wagglers have around two thirds of the total shot carrying capacity built in. So you will need additional shot down the line to properly cock the float, one of which will be the tell tale. With four inches layed-on start with the tell tale seven inches from the hook (three inches off the bottom). Feed the swim little and often.
      Hope this helps.

    I currently have a 4BB insert waggler. What shot pattern would you recommend? Shot numbers, spacing on the line?

    • @AmateurAngling
      @AmateurAngling  8 років тому

      I'm working on a film about waggler fishing right now which I will publish by the weekend. The float you mention is a sensitive still-water float, have a look at www.amateurangling.com/straight-waggler/ there is a rig sheet you can download. It is for a straight waggler float, but the same patterns will work with an insert, use a No6 as the tell tale.

      Not at this time, maybe next season. Thanks for asking, best of luck.

  • @quackchung
    @quackchung 6 років тому

    I have, rightly or wrongly always had the tell tale just touching the floor, with around 6 inches laying on as a starting point. I make sure the tell tale has just enough weight to sink the float if the fish picks up the slack and the tell tale would most likely swing in a downward arc to pull the float under, or if picked up directly inline with the mainline, It would register a lift bite. I have never had any problems with this set up, with all species of lake fish. I must add I mainly use this set up on lakes with an antenna float, so the tell tale shot needn't be too large to sink the float or spook the fish with a larger weight. It's very rare I have to use a disgorger, or miss bites. I do tend to slightly lengthen this laying on if I do miss bites, and can be lengthened up to a foot if I'm targeting bigger fish such as tench, especially in shallow water to help with line bumping etc.

    • @AmateurAngling
      @AmateurAngling  6 років тому

      Your description sounds like a Driftbeater rig. Thanks for your comment, best of luck.

    • @quackchung
      @quackchung 6 років тому

      Thanks for your kind reply AA.Yes I meant to mention the added bonus of anchoring and aiding a static bait.
      The above set up doesn't work well in a driftbeater scenario, I find the tell tale shot has to be larger in most cases, which doesn't work with an antenna float too well due to the thinner tip's low resistance to the surface tension. Too light a tell tale's weight and it drags, snags, dunks and pops the float back up. Finding the perfect weighted balance is virtually impossible with an antenna float in a drift beating scenario. Note, this set up would be predominantly used for calm lake and silver fish, due to the antenna float, as we know you could just use a lolly ice stick and eyed lead for anything bigger.
      I suppose I was querying the actual role, purpose and operation of the tell tale shot in more detail. In my case I find I use the tell tale shot's weight to indicate my bait has been picked up with no line interference. Theorising that it is easier and more convenient to eat a boiled sweet laying on the ground whilst one's hands are tied behind their back, than a boiled sweet suspended in front of one's face...Thoughts?

    • @AmateurAngling
      @AmateurAngling  6 років тому

      This film describes the purpose of the tell tale shot when used with a straight waggler or insert waggler. Can you tell us how you rig these ?

    • @quackchung
      @quackchung 6 років тому

      I too am an amateur angler and I suppose I use the tell tale shot pretty much as you have described the professional doing, using paste as part of the floats overall cocking weight. In the pro situation, he/she knows instantly when a fish has picked up their bait by mostly indicating a lift bite. He or she may then choose to strike immediately, or optionally count a few seconds if they find they miss a few on striking. The pun "Tight lines" also sums up the thinking behind the paste as weight set up, it makes a rig extremely sensitive to the best of it's ability, eking out every bit of movement from hook to reel. Although you do have to consider the pastes weight, buoyancy of float & surface tension on the float tip for best performance, as a tiny, low weighted paste bait in deep water will hardly register a lift bite on a thick tipped float. But this is how a pro and most accomplished fishermen would think, I'm sure the beginner reading this would be thinking this was too OTT, and for pleasure fishing they'd be right.
      In my personal scenario I suppose I use the tell tale shot as overall cocking weight instead of paste, this will mostly indicate a sinking float due to the 6 inch laying on, and hopefully easier bait take up for the fish (un-like trying to eat an apple suspended on string situation) plus it negates the pause strike fix the pro may incorporate, thus theoretically a better hit rate.
      For many years I've only seen the tell tale used as your concise description, or as earlier mentioned drift beating. I think your vids and descriptions are excellent and was indirectly hoping your well thought out and knowledgeable input on whether my tell tale usage was actually a good thing or bad, as typed in my first comment "Rightly or wrongly" You may hit me with a blindingly obvious Eureka moment, expressed by my "Dohhh!...Why didn't I see that" and my long time thinking was actually flawed? As this has never been seen as the "norm" for bite indication, only drift beating (which doesn't actually work well with antenna floats.)
      At the very least, your description of paste being used for overall cocking weight has perfectly explained my tell tale shot purpose, with laying on length being negotiable.
      So to answer your question. I find a tell tale shot suspended 6 inches above a just rested bait less sensitive, than using the tell tale weight for submerging the float for bite indication. The rest of the shotting pattern, or more relevant, dropper shot, would be set by conditions of the water and weather plus where the fish were feeding in the column, shirt, bulk...etc.
      As noted, I do have good hook placement and rate so have stuck to this approach. By no means does this post wish you, or the established practice change whatsoever, but is merely my own conclusion and works best on still and relatively shallow waters up to 6 feet especially with an antenna float. Deeper still water with a long antenna float and equidistant shirt style droppers is a good way to fish through the water column on the drop, by counting how long each dropper registers on the tip will indicate an interception and also a good example of how each weight effects the spacing on the antenna after settling.

    Just an observation, if you were "laying on" would your shot not be on the lake bed, rather than an inch or two above it like you demonstrated in this video? When I've been "laying on" I use a gap between 4 and 8 inches between the tell tale shot and hook, with the shot firmly on the lakebed.

    • @AmateurAngling
      @AmateurAngling  6 років тому +1

      What I say is "with the line laying on the bottom" in the context of waggler fishing, as opposed to "laying on" which is a different rig. Best of luck.

      As the water is deeper than a standard 13ft float rod is long, it's probably easier to use slider float. Something like a DJK peacock straight or insert slider. This film by Alan Scotthorne may be of use.
