Western Maryland Scenic 734: Going Out in Style!

  • With Western Maryland Scenic Railroad's main locomotive, 2-8-0 734 going down for its 15 yr inspection and a major overhaul at the beginning of 2016, it was only fitting to catch her in action one last time before the long wait for her return. Me and two of my good friends went down to catch the former LS&I steamer on its second to last week of revenue excursions. We chased the train between Cumberland and Frostburg, MD, catching them in some well known and some different shots along the line. Also included is footage of wying the engine in Carpendale, WV, and the nighttime North Pole Express trains. Enjoy this last look from SJRailroaderVideos of WMSR 734 in action on the former Western Maryland mainline!

      @@henryszubielski8601 that whistle yo my knowledge hasn't been on 734 since 2011. It was on the locomotive from 1993-1995, and then generally she wore a Hancock 3 chime and various other whistles. This was an SP 6 chime. She wore that the later half of her last year in service.

      +Rob Kersey dont worry it will be rebuilt and returned soon enough, npk 765 is very close to her 15 being up next april, but we are hurrying and doing half the boiler work now and half next year to stay ahead of it so it will not be out of commission for long, but thats ok, when its time for a rebuilt for me it will likely be time to learn as I plan to just be in the shop I dont have the time to travel on the road though I would love to do that on excursion, there is just not enough days off on my work schedual to do that. beside my specialty is doing woodwork of what I do know of building I learned working with wood watching my dad since age 6, welding on the other hand I started to try to learn at age 34 and know the theory but my welds are like tomato worms lots of the time.

    Personally, it always drove me nuts to see a diesel behind a steam engine. I know for a face that 2-8-0 will pull 10 passenger cars without to much of a struggle.

    • @steveevans4093
      @steveevans4093 8 років тому

      +NewBoston Truck 1 Your right,, a bit of a bummer. I know when the UP Challenger makes a run a diesel unit is required for shunt braking. I think it also provides electricity for the passenger cars. Many scenic railways sure get by without them. Must be a regulation thing.

    • @308RoadReady
      @308RoadReady 7 років тому +2

      the reason why the 734 needed a diesel is because of the stiff grade going up to Frostburg. That is why the WMSRR acquired 1309 (so they dont have to add helpers to get the train to Frostburg). The WMSRR doesn't like 734 needing helpers because it adds costs, plus it didn't help that 734 supposedly had a flue fail the day before by what I heard.

    • @jakeumebayashi3243
      @jakeumebayashi3243 6 років тому +1

      Ikr, it sucks, the reason is to just add braking and power to the cars, the railroads only other option is to buy a boxcar and put generators in it to power the passenger cars, they are called power cars

    • @keithm5224
      @keithm5224 6 років тому +1

      I think it's more of a requirement if the steam locomotive doesn't have modern safety equipment installed. I know the 844 does and I think that's why she runs by herself.

    • @chendersonrailproductions704
      @chendersonrailproductions704 6 років тому

      On one of our chases this past year Set met a former worker from Western Maryland When they original started running 734 they had no problems getting the train up to frostburg. but as they grew bigger they started adding more coaches and like here Sister at 18 at the canyon, 734 had problems the past few years. Which is why they chose 1309. I guess 734 needed a good overhaul at the end.

  • @BalticFilms144
    @BalticFilms144 5 років тому +2

    Sadly due to 734s poor mechanical and boiler condition, she's been retired indefinitely. Due to the increase in ridership since 1993, trains have gotten longer and heavier which made the 734 underpowered and slow. Not to mention she hasn't been given the proper maintenance to stay in perfect working order.
    With 1309s overhaul coming along smoothly, she will be WMSR's replacement flagship engine with the capability to meet the demands that 734 just can't fulfill. With that said, I'm glad 734 put in 22 years of service and earned her place in preservation history.

      Baltic 144 productions k think your just over thinking it and this isn't the end for 734 becuase there are plans for 734 to run again once 1309 is complete in the next few weeks or month and once its late fall or early 2020 work begins to restore the 2-8-0 back to service so if we can give them at least 2 to 3 years or 5 734 will be back in service in no time

    Is the WMSR hauling freight now? I visited the railroad's website and noticed it has a freight services tab and published freight and fuel surcharge tariffs. It would be interesting to see actual revenue freight moving on the line with modern freight cars instead of those photo freight excursions.

      Long forecast is 10 years, but they hope to have her up and running sooner than that.. With all her clanking and all the steam escaping in various places around the cylinders, her bearings are all probably needing replaced as well as the seals. She hardly ever climbs without a diesel in tow. She's a tired loco, and needs some TLC.

    Your photography is nicely done on the approach. But too much lead time. You calim to be presenting the locomotive. There is more time devoted to watching the undercarriage os passenger cars than of the working mechanisms of the locomotive. Why don't you pan the camera to get the locomotive as it goes by. Why not get more of the drive train. The following car are a dine a dozen. The locomotives are the rare elements in your videos. Concentrate on that. About 70% of your screen time is scenic or rail cars. The other 30% is of the locomotive. But you ceratinly have some wonderful shots of the monster chuffing up a storm.
