It's so sad that no one thought to save "The Tonight Show" with Jack Paar. Jack Paar was the greatest. It was so good to see Miss Miller again! I forgot about her - she used to be in the audiences of all the talk shows and they'd always acknowledge her.
+Jake Drew Came down to dollars, the 2" videotape was very expensive then. Jack was one of the first to spread the PC mentality of the elitists through the mass medium and that has led to the sorry state we are in now. Johnny was smart enough not to fall into that trap.
Actually, Paar got himself into trouble during his Tonight Show heyday for sounding off on Castro and the Cuban revolution and what was seen as giving a forum for Castro as he took power. That was in part at the root of his feuding with Dorothy Kilgallen. So while he *personally* came off as non-partisan he did step into political controversy more than once and that facet of his career has for the most part been forgotten when our only exposure to Paar is through the rose-colored nostalgia of clip shows. Listen to the full audio of his last show which I've posted and you will hear Paar at his harshest as he decides to go out with guns blazing at Kilgallen and in particular Walter Winchell.
@@jamesmarshall8836 I heard they taped over them. They could have made money from reruns and they have great historical importance. Now they deprive us from enjoying them and learning about the past. They were very stupid
For those commenting on The Tonight Show, this isn't it, due to the date. I think it's the subsequent Jack Paar Program, which aired Friday nights for a couple years. Paar left the Tonight Show in 1962.
Lillian Dorothy Miller (May 26, 1897 - April 1, 1990) better known as Miss Miller, was a regular audience member of various American television variety shows from the 1950s to the 1980s. Miller was first a regular audience member of The Tonight Show throughout Steve Allen's and Jack Paar's tenures as host. Miss Miller was even brought along when the New York City-based show would go on location to places such as Havana, Cuba, Hollywood, California, and Niagara Falls. She became such a fixture on the show that she joined AFTRA, the TV actors' union.[
Yes, the real reason i tuned into this was that I'd just watched McCarthy with Dick Cavett from several years later, and it was delightful, and i saw something from a WEEK? after the JFK assassination, and was surprised to find NO mention of it at all. MUST be a mistake!
for its time, that was a very interesting conversation, particularly on the gender issues, the comparison w/ the soviets, europe, etc. wish it had been longer.
It is interesting that this was a week after the president was assassinated and only four days after the state funeral, "life goes on" if you will. The assassination is presented as a great tragedy in the United States, so much so one would think that no one got on with their lives until 1965. Then again, people needed diversion from their thoughts. This was a great episode to watch for I just read "The Group" and highly recommend it to everyone. It is a good piece of writing, insightful, and witty. I think if you appreciated seeing Mary McCarthy and enjoyed her humor and intelligence, definitely go out and buy the book. We all think of the Tonight Show as being Johnny Carson. But there was Steve Allen (whose act Letterman stole - that's not a criticism, Carson stole Jack Benny's act) and Jack Paar first. Each brought something different to the game. Carson was sui generis and everyone has now copied him. You cannot make an "original" chat show anymore. You have to have the desk and two chairs. Maybe some bits. Thanks for posting. I truly enjoyed it. If you can find some Oscar Levant appearances, I'd be much obliged.
This show I'd note was pre-taped for airing the evening of November 22 so as the chatting was taking place, the assassination hadn't happened yet. It was of course pre-empted and aired the following week with a new intro by Paar that isn't seen here.
Well, when I watched Johnny Carson, I never for once thought, 'man, he's doing Jack Benny!' I'm sure Jack Benny was in his comedy, but Johnny stood on his own. I mean, it's not exactly Denis Leary absolutely stealing Bill Hicks' act and calling it his own.
As another person on here commented, the date of this show must be wrong. JFK was shot on November 22, 1963. I was a freshman in high school when that happened, The world was in chaos. During that week, Oswald was shot by Jack Ruby. The funeral of JFK was going on and every TV station was talking about it day and night. There is NO way that this show was only 7 days after JFK was assassinated and not a word about JFK is spoken,
Jack Paar was the worst late night talk show host ever. I'm 74 and saw them all. He was absolutely horrible. I thought I'd give him another shot by watching a few of these shows and they are boring as h*ll
Milt was a favorite of my father...Milt was a great observer.
Thanks for an excellent post of a neglected king of comedy!
Milt Avruskin
so rare to see paar clips!! thank you soooo much!

if they did save the shows, tv fans'd see that carson completely ripped off his style
These Jack Paar Programs (1962-1965) were originally on color videotape. Should have been saved.

It's Miss Miller, not to be confused with a 60s novelty act, Mrs. Miller, whose covers of pop songs can be found on youtube, such as Downtown.
wow how were they so pumped and happy only 7 days after the death of JFK ?

An interesting example of how men and women interacted back in the 60's. He was somewhat condescending and she was speaking very intelligently.
5 days before I entered this world
It’s terrible how many shows of historical significance like this one were erased or taped over by the stupid people in charge
Great show; certainly on par with Dick Cavett!
Dick Cavett was one of Jack Paar’s writers, I believe. He would have had a ringside seat.

there is no talent even in the same universe as Oscar.

What could Mary McCarthy have thought of Jack Paar?

Of all the things he could have focussed on it was sex - a different age but so shallow all the same
Exactly.

Hola. Aqui no dicen nada del atentado a Kennedy, la fecha parece ser anterior al 22 de noviembe 63. ¿CUAL ES TU OPINION?
@@yei-jopbities6100 I agree. The must be before November 22, 1963. I didn't pay attention to the date. Good observation on your part,
