    These videos are really well made. Mine is having the same issue, had some things changed but it's still overheating. It hit 250k miles a while ago, and debating whether to replace it or get a new motor. Either way, very thorough explanation!

    Shame on me, I never thanked you for the videos. I watched them several times and successfully completed the repair in January’22. Unfortunately I found a small, short hairline crack at the top of block between cyl 2&3, but I decided to carry on and it’s held up very well. I haven’t done a block test but I have driven the car near 20k miles and had no issues. I opted for a Remanufactured head from JEGS, new chain and guides, kept the original VVTI sprocket, new exhaust cam sprocket, water pump, gaskets. Saved me probably 30-35k on new Tacoma. I spent about 1,200 on parts. Thanks for the great instructions!

    I have been working all day on the XA - ended up being the coolant temp sensor was bad and not turning on the fan, the owner said "it keeps overheating was the problem" Turns out they waited too long and the overheating went on too long, I mean, I don't know how many times but it was A LOT of times. after replacing the thermostat, also making sure the water pump was working, testing the fan and then installing a new coolant temp sensor ( the thing that turns the fan on when it needs to be on ) - putting everything together ( The fan comes on now like it should) testing for leaks and finding NONE. fired it back up on dry land to see if any leaks would pop back up. Poof! there is no white smoke at the tail pipe but water is coming out and getting on the driveway. Grrr. ( head gasket for sure) But the motor runs great, fires right up, warms up, choke kicks down, idles at 600 or so, but the coolant is at the tail pipe. now I came here to see about this job and hoping that the cost would be mentioned and Nothing on the cost. not the labor, just the cost of that head shop deal for a round about expense thing. I mean, I can go get a lower mile motor from a u pull it for around 400 to 450. I have watched all three vids in a row by the way, I just only commented on this one. 218,000 miles, standard 5 speed 2004 scion xa.

      Never thought it matter about labor cost since this is was more for the diyer. Appreciate the comment!

      @@mechanicbuilt I only say it matters because I am a do it yourselfer, with not a ton of dough to waste I like to get out as cheap as I can even if it takes me a while to do. so I was just thinking is it cheaper to rebuild this one or just pull it and get a different one is all. you know, what is less. I am still debating with myself. I have not called any shops or anything like that, I really haven't ever done this sort of repair.

    Subbed! I just did this whole job ty! Helped a lot. I'm getting code for cam sensor and car won't start, but it's in timing. Only code is p0340 and I'm thinking the sensor or wiring is affected so I'm going to dig into those today. I read that there's specific codes for out of timing so I'm in good hopes I did time it right

    Wait a minute. Torque the bolts dry? Every other engine I have worked on specifies oiled threads for proper torque. Is this unique to this engine?

      I have thew service manual and just did a head gasket. I didn't see anything about oil on the head bolts.

    The whole point of watching a video is to see how to do each step unfortunately this is not the video for that. He doesn’t explain anything or show us close ups to how to install the cams that’s whole reason I’m watching a video to get it right but this isn’t the right video for that we are basically just watching some guy put together a motor woohoo. Nothing informative here. How bout information this cam timing marks should be here and the cam should look like this as you install your bearing caps. Same with timing chain close up on it start here work it around this way. 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 was hoping for some information guess I’ll keep looking

    Was the head warped at all.

    • @mechanicbuilt
      @mechanicbuilt  4 роки тому +2

      Yes, the machine shop told me it was slightly warped in the middle and that's were the head gasket failed. They usually don't plane heads that i send them if they dont think it needs it and theyll just give it a hot bath. They also took the head on a pressure test bench to make sure the valves were sitting properly.

      Mechanic Built ok. I’m just debating on doing it or spend the money and buy another use Xb. Right now mine has 325k on her. So original motor and original trans. I got my money’s worth out of it.

    • @mechanicbuilt
      @mechanicbuilt  4 роки тому +1

      @@slimatmim If you aren't doing the work yourself I would get another XB unless the one you have has sentimental value, or replace the motor for a decent lower mileage one since the amount of labor is similar to an engine swap according to my labor book. Though even if you do get a different xb just remember it'll probably need maintenance also. 325k for a Toyota? You most definitely got your money's worth lol.

      I have an xa and am debating on the same. My vehicle was overheating so I was hopeful that maybe the water pump or thermostat were bad. I changed them and had the same issue occurring.
      How much am I looking on spending for a head gasket repair? And what would it be to replace the engine?
