      What if they were so set on getting to Paradise Falls that maybe adopting was the plan after. Maybe they didn't feel any other place in the world would be good enough for raising a child.

      If Carl and Eddie adopt a child, this would alter the movie a little bit. Not letting the house go up with those balloons. Never meeting our friendly adventure scout. Most important of all never meeting that colorful bird. What was that bird in the movie? Could it be the Dodo? or Was the a relic from a prehistoric era?

    Chances are they didn't adopt because it's expensive, and like you said, they weren't well to do. I think the miscarriage is very plausible as well and there's a big reason for that. (Warning, this is about to get deep and possibly very depressing for some people)
    The scene where Elli is sitting in the yard just staring. Hearing you're infernal is a big downer, but not that kind of downer. Women don't sit in the yard on a dining room chair and stare into space because of simple infertility. They stare into space because of losing their baby. Chances are that she was about 3-4 months pregnant, and when she went in for a check up they found out she had lost the baby. That is devastating, and would likely send her into a serious depression the we don't even know how long it lasted.
    Super depressing, but very plausible.
    Love your videos by the way. Great brain food sometimes.

      Meagan Shupe I do agree with you on the miscarriage part, in that I do think she had one but mainly because of the way the doctor visits were shown. I do have a different look on the infertility thing though. Infertility is one very heart breaking thing, it makes you feel broken inside and it's shattering. I believe it is completely believable that it can cause deep depression. Infertility takes your choice away, can make you feel inferior, and can put great strain on relationships. It is hard and only those going through it or have gone through it can truly understand.

      Samantha Stokes my entire family has major fertility issues. My grandmother was told she could never get pregnant and by some miracle ended up with my mom. I've been told multiple times that it may be difficult if not impossible to conceive naturally or at all due to cancer treatments from when I was 18. It's upsetting, but much easier to get through than a miscarriage. And I just get the feeling Ellie wouldn't be the type of woman to let it stop her. Not to say that who don are weak, just that it doesn't effect all women that way. A miscarriage, however, almost universally does.

    • @Rhyianan
      @Rhyianan 6 років тому +33

      It’s also possible that she miscarried and complications from the miscarriage caused infertility. That’s a double whammy that can be hard to recover from.

    • @shadenox8164
      @shadenox8164 6 років тому +17

      Its entirely possible that its the miscarriage itself that made her unable to have a child, or even worse she could still get pregnant but she'd likely miscarriage again or have other complications that threaten her life. Giving birth is still quite an ordeal even with modern medical assistance and some women's bodies are just not up to taking the strain.

    • @amandahealey2216

      I disagree with one thing: Usually you would know when you have a miscarriage even before you go see a doctor.

  • @stephenschiffman5940
    @stephenschiffman5940 6 років тому +340

    First off, it wasn't a simple case of infertility, that was a miscarriage. It clearly shows the two of them setting up a nursery, and no one does that unless they're pregnant. I've never known anyone set up a nursery when they were simply planning.
    Second, An adoption is very costly and very difficult. Doing it at any point in your life is hard, much less doing it after a miscarriage. A miscarriage can be devastating on a couple, sometimes to the point where they completely give up on becoming a parent.

      queendsheena1. I think that was a good theory Wotso Videos had about why Carl & Ellie couldn't have or adopt a child, but if they really wanted a child that badly & couldn't adopt, why not consider Fostering instead? Perhaps they actually did foster children but the movie deliberaltely left out or would not put in scenes where a Social Worker would drop off &/or pick up the kids in question. Plus the scene where Russell the Boy Scout showed up the 1st time on Carl's doorstep, maybe he was the son of a fostered child he & Ellie raised but neither Carl or Russell recognised each other. Another theory I have is what about Carl & Ellie's relatives? If a relation (or both) on either side of the family had died (or was unable to care for) & a child was in need of a home, they'd have jumped at the chance of taking in their Niece/Nephew/Cousin's Child & giving him/her the home that was so badly needed.

      I wonder if they are too devastated to pursue adoption. Their child died while stillborn. So adopting only remained them of that experience.

    • @Teddyiscute
      @Teddyiscute 6 років тому +19

      I doubt it. She wasn't shown to be noticeably pregnant or giving birth although we know she most likely got pregnant and even if that happened it wouldn't mean she was infertile since she was still able to carry it full term. It looks more to me like they went to the doctor for a regular check up for the baby and was told they lost it due to infertility issues. (although can infertile women even get pregnant? I think she was though and I'm just looking too far into it.) Although losing a child st all (and maybe having even more unseen failed attempts at pregnancy as most couples with fertility problems do) still could've been enough to make them not want to adopt. And it's also possible that they were a bit older by the time they knew for sure they couldn't have one (age does make it a bit harder as well) and felt too old to adopt at that point as the process takes a while anyway. Personally though I believe the theory that Riley and Andy's moms (from Inside out and Toy story) were Carl's children from a previous relationship he had with a women named Emma Jean who they stayed close to over the years so they ultimately decided that even though Ellie wanted her own children that his children being in their life was ultimately enough for them. If you don't know what I mean though, look it up. The super carlin brothers did a video on the theory and the director of Inside out confirmed who Emma Jean was in an interview with them. It's really interesting and there's a lot to it, I just wouldn't be able to explain it all in one comment.

      +The Media Raptor I think it was a miscarriage and that caused Ellie to not be able to conceive after that, it can happen to some women I've heard of it before, since miscarriages can cause damage to a woman's reproductive system. :(

      I dont know if the baby was stillborn, but im pretry sure that she was not infertile. They loss a child, if you are infertile, you can not get pregnat. I dont know why ppl think they can have one. They loss one and it was very traumatic for her, so she didnt wanted to suffer again.

    • @SallinKari
      @SallinKari 6 років тому +27

      My impression was always it was a miscarriage or stillborn... The face of Ellie sitting outside was more that just that of someone who couldn't have a child... It's that of someone who lost one. And if it was a particularly bad miscarriage, it could have rendered her infertile to boot.

    My stepfather was adopted around the era Ellie and Carl would have. The reasons you give, while legitimate, are similar to his adoption story:
    1. Miscarriage - his parents had over 6-7 of them. It was so sad. When his father passed away, I found letters they wrote to each other where she writes, "I love you, but if you need to find a new girl who can give you a family, I understand." The reply letter was so beautiful and romantic, "You are my girl, my only love. I wouldn't and couldn't be anyone else. Don't feel bad or blame yourself, you can't help what your body does. Take care of my girl and don't risk it anymore to make me happy. You are my happiness."😭💖
    She had 7 miscarriages in less than five years - I'm fairly certain more.
    They were not "well off" but did adopt not one but TWO children that they adored. (Almost 50 years and they still had saved report cards, baby teeth, ect.)
    If the adventure that Carl and Ellie wanted was a baby, they were innovative, creative, driven, and in love enough to have made it happen.
    We only see ONE trip at an OBG with her crying. My theory is that the miscarriage damaged her reproductively and she (like my Stepfather's adoptive mother) didn't feel like "a woman" anymore. Leading to the depression we see later.
    My best guess is that even the THOUGHT of a child was too painful, so Carl reminded her of what made him love her in the first place - her adventurous spirit and lofty dreams (as an adoption would further remind her of the dream cut short, never carrying a child made from their love and bringing it to term.)
    In short, it would have been a painful reminder of her loss and possibly called in to question her dreams and adventurous spirit after "failing", knowing she couldn't even try again and possibly a physically painful miscarriage(s) that may have led to her "losing" a part of herself.
    Carl reminds her that she's still his Ellie - no matter what biological changes, and she is still whole and perfect in his eyes with a revelation similar to what he felt when he finally gets her message in the adventure book.
    Just speaking from the stories and letters of a real-life love similar to Carl and Ellie's.
    The similarities were so strong actually, that it's the reason why I can't watch UP ever again. It's too close to home.

      @@kaytlinjustis5643 I'm glad you liked it. (I had forgotten I had written this here.)
      There were many other amazing letters between the two of them that, while on a different subject, were very touching and romantic. (The fact that they had been carefully saved and organized in chronological order despite many times the recipient was overseas...)
      With all of the details, of which I've only gone into the tip of the iceberg, it makes for an amazing love story.
      I would consider adapting it; but it's not mine to inherit.

    I think they just wanted to try to focus on adventuring. It would be harder to that with a child. Also after finding out you can't have kids maybe they were worried some how the adoption wouldn't go through or the parent would change there mind. They didnt want to get hurt again.

    As someone who's struggling with infertility, I can relate to ellie and carl's situation. Adoption is not a cure for infertility. The trauma when I find out I probably cannot have biological children, never have the chance to experience pregnancy and breastfeeding, the loss of my genetic, all cannot be erased just by adoption. Adoption is an amazing and beautiful thing but I have to be fully healed from infertility trauma before diving into it. I cannot raise a child when I'm still grieving.

    I feel like maybe Ellie might've had an infertility condition that required a hysterectomy, cause back in those days if you had anything wrong with your reproductive organs and you were female, you had them removed 9 times out of 10. This might've thrown her into a depression that would resurface anytime they thought about the idea of becoming parents again, as losing organs like that can hit you hard. Or disregarding the hysterectomy part, she still could have become extremely depressed and thinking about children any further would throw her down that dark spiral again and again. As much as we wanted them to be happy with kids, just as the sequence shows, life unfortunately doesn't always go that way, but they made in through together.

    • @AquatheOhioKittysDen
      @AquatheOhioKittysDen 6 років тому +9

      As a woman who had a hysterectomy at 24 due to cancer it did send me into a deep depression. At 26 now my boyfriend is all for adoption after we're married thinking about it does just make me fall down into that spiral of sadness. As it possibly was for Ellie as well, it's not something many people deal with. Though I never had the chance of becoming pregnant before it all happened.

    • @charlottemartyr
      @charlottemartyr 6 років тому +6

      I think this is a very strong theory. Fertility issues run strong in my family and one perticular one i wanna talk about for this topic is scarring/hemorrhaging. This can either be caused by pregnancy (or loss of one) or can be the cause of the loss but essencially its the phenomenon of having a very severe bleed or rupture during a miscarriage which can in turn cut off blood supply to the reproductive organs. In minor cases this can cause scar tissue which makes it diffucult or impossible for pregnancies afterwards to 'stick' or to death of the organ, which would require removal. This is more common during the 2nd trimester, and is usually very complicated, making the loss even more traumatic. The psychological impact is even stronger than the already awful circumstance because if you are left with a removal just being around children can feel like a reminder of what you can absolutely never have and even if it is merely that it will be more difficult the thought of trying again and running the risk can be so upsetting and stressful it's often easier to avoid it altogether. It can basically be so traumatizing it can bring on a form of PTSD. I've watched many women in my family go through this and have had my own struggles with it that i can see very easily mirrored in elle; the excitement for a family, the emotional outburst when the loss is fresh, the quiet depression as time passes, and the eventual regain of happiness only after moving on from it. For some the pain and trauma is enough that they do not want to or cannot handle being around or caring for children. Sometimes it changes your feelings on the subject or sometimes letting go altogether is the only way to heal.

      Adoption isn't heartbreaking for the adoptive parents (actually, that's not entirely true, it's complicated), but deciding to give up on having biological kids is heartbreaking. Any therapist will tell you it's a full-on grieving process. While my own infertility pushed me to consider adoption, many others in the infertility community just can't handle (or even necessarily desire) raising a child not biologically related to them.

    Maybe Carl & Ellie at some point knew that them being in love, although without children & trying to get to Paradise Falls together (even though it never happened)...they had to create their own Paradise Falls within themselves & as a couple.
    Sorry my grandparent's remind me a lot of Carl & Ellie. My grandma was always up for an adventure when she was really young. She traveled all over the world in her 20's. She settled down with my grandpa (who from the Navy traveled all over the globe) & married. Although, they couldn't have their own children they fostered & also adopted kids. My grandma died 5 years ago. My grandpa is alive & still as sweet as ever. After my grandma died my grandpa had to start doing more of the talking (ironically because my grandma had been the social butterfly between the two of them).
    Sorry for rambling I really love this movie & what it reminds me of lol

    What if there is a third option? You said they didn't adopt because maybe they COULDN'T adopt (as in, they weren't eligible to adopt) or they didn't feel comfortable because of the times or just didn't consider that option after she learned she couldn't bear children because she couldn't bear the pain of raising a child that wasn't hers, but if you really think about it, there is a third option. What if, after receiving the devastating news that Ellie couldn't have a child of her own, they WANTED to adopt....but they just simply ran out of time? Adopting a child takes a lot of money, and as we saw in the montage at the beginning, they lived a humble life and kept saving their money, but then life happened and the savings kept being used for other things....a new roof, hospital bills, the car etc. and soon, they had to put aside their dreams and just live life. Maybe, as with their journey to Paradise Falls, their dream of adopting a child just never happened while she was alive. But if you notice, at the end of the movie, Ellie's life was not one lived in sadness. She never got her child and she never saw Paradise Falls, but she had her Carl and she was happy with that adventure. Their love was enough for her and when she was gone she wanted him to be happy again without her which is why he "adopted" Russell.
    Another thing to consider is, what if they DID adopt? If you look at the scene in the end when he's looking at the book and finds she filled it with all the pictures of them, one must ask the question "Who took those pictures?" Some of them are just of her, so you could argue he took them, but in some, they are together in the picture....and they look like really personal, family-type pictures because it is JUST of them....there is no one else in the pictures with them and we don't ever see them with friends after the wedding scene. So who captured those memories?

    Thanks for making this video. I've heard people say, "Why didn't they just adopt?" as if adoption is cheap, easy, and right for everyone. They don't realize that adoption costs tens of thousands of dollars up front. Adopted children often have serious physical and mental health issues that would require extensive specialized treatment which would cost even more. I doubt a balloon seller and amusement park worker would have that money.
    In addition, at every stage of the adoption process, you can lose the kid. Even after they come live with you. Ellie and Carl already had to deal with the loss of their pregnancy. They might have thought that losing a kid would be too much to handle.

  • @Kyeju
    @Kyeju 5 років тому +4

    I think people assume adoption to be easier than it is, especially after losing a pregnancy. Look at it from Ellie's perspective. She's spent months feeling a little life grow within her, preparing to meet her and Carl's child and love it with all her heart... and suddenly something is wrong. She can feel it. They see the doctor, run exams and suddenly, she's in mourning. They both are, and Carl has witnessed this all. He's been working like mad to make a stable and happy home for a kid that can no longer be. That is not something you just say "let's just get a replacement kid" with any degree of sanity. Adoption is an option, sure, but I personally wouldn't bring a kid into a home where they were in every respect a backup plan. So them redirecting their sights to Paradise Falls once again was likely as much about healing their relationship as anything.

    I was hesitant to watch this video, even though I watch almost every video you post, but this one hits far too close to home. I'm currently battling infertility and it's rough. One of the worst things that people tell me is to "just adopt." Adoption is a great thing and is something that we are considering down the road, but I still hate hearing people toss that idea out there as if that were to relieve every single ounce of pain caused by infertility. Anyhow, I believe your analysis is accurate and I definitely couldn't have voiced it nearly as well as you have. You have a wisdom far beyond your years. Keep up the great work!

    So I wonder something, in Tangled the series we see that Rapunzel's hair and it's powers are tied to the rocks. Now if that other theory about Elsa being related to her is true could it be that Rapunzel took the bright healing power of the flower and Elsa was left over with the husk of those powers. A power more tied to the moon and the season mostly tied with it, winter and snow

    Coming from someone who was adopted due to similar reasons (My mom had a hysterectomy due to ovaric cancer) I can confirm that adoption is expensive and time consuming, and unfortunately even if they wanted to adopt, they would probably have to wait years on the "waiting list" like my parents would have had to do to adopt a second child like they wanted. How long? 18 years of waiting to adopt a second child.
    The time it took to get onto that list, before the inspection even happened, could be a huge factor of it as well, like it was in my parent's decision not to adopt more children.

    I Definatly thought they lost the baby. I thought it was pretty obvious. Not many people decorate a room before knowing they are pregnant.
    After having lost a child of my own I understand the grief. Sometimes that is too much to try again, and maybe to painful to try adopting.
    We have a beautiful baby girl now, but I can see the loss being too hard to keep trying.

    Perhaps Carl and Ellie realized that having a child and starting a family wasn’t the adventure they were meant to have. At the end of the movie, Carl finds their old book and discovers Ellie filled it with pictures of their life together instead of saving them for South America with the note that read, “Thanks for the adventure. Now go have one of your own!” I believe Ellie had a revelation that her greatest adventure was being married to Carl. Every little moment captured in those pictures showed how even the seemingly most insignificant moments in life are the most memorable. Ellie grew content with the life she shared with Carl because their love was the best adventure of all, ultimately dying happy with her true love holding her hand and kissing her.

    I agree with both of your reasons that they did not adopt as they were not very well off and were extremely disappointed and sad about their inability to produce children. However, I can't help but think that the biggest reason was that they wanted a child of their OWN. Where I live, adopting a child is quite uncommon and if you are correct and Ellie and Carl learned about their infertility in the 1950s, perhaps they never considered adopting as they felt the idea of raising someone else's child unsuitable for them.
    Great job on the video!

    Adoption is long and expensive, and I imagine there wasn't aa many regulation as there are now, so it can be super risky. That and adopting isnt the same as being pregnant. Especially when you wanted to be a parent. You had all this joy and preparation to invite someone you made into this world, but you were never able to met them, and you found out you cant ever do that again. Its takes a huge toll. It's also might be that Ellie is suffering from some sort of postpartum depression that kept persisting.

    Hmm, maybe Carl & Elle just put the thought of children on the back burner and didn't really revisit the topic in depth anymore? For their time line, back in the day the man was viewed as the bread winner, but wives could also work holding a part time job. Maybe they entertained guests at home often in their youth or had a busy lifestlye and it didn't end up happening.. But remember Carl DOES get a child in some form..through Russel! I thought the end of the movie was so heartfelt how Carl became a stable and positive role model for Russel. Awesome to see that type of positivity going on, especially after alluding to the fact that Russel was in foster care for the time being. Thank you again for another great video!

    I think that Ellie's health was a factor. Remember that she died significantly earlier than Carl of a mysterious illness. I think that Ellie was diagnosed with potentially fatal disease in the scene with the doctor and did not want to start raising a child only to deprive them of a mother prematurely.

  • @sierrad8476

    I agree with the idea of it being too straining. I'm an adoptee, and let me tell you, I am very aware of how much effort my folks put into just qualifying to become adoption parents! (Then again I'm an international adoptee too, so that might be another layer of stress on its own...). Carl and Ellie wouldn't have been able to invest all that work into being able to take in a child by that channel.
    That's probably even why they went all gung ho about their Paradise Falls dream. If they couldn't have an adventure of a lifetime as loving parents, then what better way to move forward than by finding a new dream?
    This is such a bitter sweet movie, and this is such a great topic to discuss. Well done, Isaac.

    I think that there's a good chance that the adoption agencies rejected them. There's already the part you mentioned about how the adoption agencies might have concluded that from their lack of financial stability -- but their unconventional personalities would have also garnered prejudice from the adoption agencies.
    Who would be the biggest victim of this? Not Carl and Ellie, but an LGBTQI child awaiting adoption --- a child for whom Carl and Ellie would be perfect, loving, accepting parents - but who would instead be adopted (if at all) by the kind of couple that would send them to conversion therapy.

    I believe that while Ellie was adventurous, Carl was very cautious. He dreamed of one baby, Ellie dreamed of many. Perhaps he was reluctant to adopt. It would make his relationship with Russell more poignant if he finally pursued both the adventure of a trip to Paradise Falls and parenting (sort of) after he lost her. Fulfilling the adventures his beloved was never able to accomplish.

    I think they just decided to concentrate on what they had which was each other and to pursue the rest of their lives achieving everything they knew they could do together where as if they tried to focus on one dream, that may never of come true, they would of spent years wasting the precious time they had. Another thing to consider is if you grew up through the war then you knew that life was precious and must be enjoyed to the full. So the negative road on the child dream was probably a sign to move on to the next dream.

    I say the reason they didn't adopt is not because of personal views. Some couples, even now a-days, feel that if the child isn't their own, then it's not worth the struggle. That's why many don't adopt, because they feel they could never love a child that neither helped to create as much as one they made themselves.

    I always figured they hadn't adopted because of the system., though I wasn't sure of how it worked in their time. It is one of the main reasons people choose not to adopt or adopt internationally, as it is usually very tiring. Sometimes you're even legally forced to give the child up, to a "more fitting family" or their biological one.

    Hey Wotso Videos. I think that was a good theory you had about why Carl & Ellie couldn't adopt a child, but if they really wanted a child that badly & couldn't adopt, why not consider Fostering instead?
