Does this mean if I'm in combat, I need to spend 1 AP to create the fire and then a 2nd AP to attack with it? That's at least how i read it. If that's not the case, please consider revising some words. ... Thanks a bunch
Yknow, I hear all of 2 things about DC20 coming out (excited btw) and decided I would start a journey of making my own ttrpg system. I have some good mechanics and interesting systems but somehow I managed to replicate 4 things in DC20 that I wasn't even aware of until this video! The Prime stat, Source of Power, Stamina Point and Mana Point. Though I named them different they seem functionally the same. This just gets me more excited for DC20 though, theyre mechanics I wanted to see in a ttrpg and now I know they're being done by professionals :)
I know the classes are still being updates, but reading through the 0.5 and watching videos makes me so excited. Like, this is what I wanted the dnd update to be--I might be jumping ship. You captured the class flavors so well. I recently made a monk PC and reading through the abilities I realized how "active" they are. Like, you can basically blow through all your stamina points to gain ki during your turn, then use your ki points during your reactions to regain stamina. It's so nasty.
This all really sounds so interesting. Like, my mind wanders right now getting into Dnd for the first time and going over the 5e stuff. But I actually want to try and stay focused on the videos being put out for this. I'm not sure, I think in this case with what we are getting for the classes, they just sound a little more fun and rewarding to play? Maybe that's part of why I'm liking it? That and these rules just make a little more sense to me? Dunno, but this will be cool to look into!
Wizard and sorcerer seem quite similar, are they both necessary? As you can choose you prime attribute being able to freely determine your relationship with magic would be cool. I'm a might "magic man" so my magic comes from within me I'm a int "magic man" so my magic come from study. I think I just prefer less classes and more subclasses. I feel the same for warlord. Could that just be a subclass for fighter?
The wizard sigil feature sounds very cool, it seems it would bring a whole new set of tactics whenever a wizard decides to put down a sigil. Like the sigil becomes and objective in the battle field, something to gain control over and make sure the enemy wizard is pushed away from it and having the ranger place a bear-trap on top of it, haha!
DC20 sounds super cool and exciting to me. Kind of a DnD 5 and DnD 4 mix with the future proof combat speed and cinematic action. Little DCC and DW in there too. Great work.
I know this has been seconded already but I'm going to third this because it needs to be said: Is there going to be a Gish type Bladesinger-ish class or subclass?
I really love what you did with rouge. They feel like scoundrel that don’t fight fair instead of whatever they are in 5e. Can you believe that the edgy loner class fights better with friends than alone?
I don't like the idea of that wizard sigil feature. I'll reserve judgement until I see it in play in it's final form, but speaking as a wizard player, repositioning yourself is incredibly important to stay alive as such a squishy and strategic class. Having a feature that pins you down to one place seems to encourage a stationary playstyle which is both dangerous and less interesting to me.
Your enthusiasm really makes me ramped up to play this! I'm curious as to having no Druid/Shaman class? Or I guess another class already fills that roll maybe? Super cool either way!
Have you played Guild Wars 2? I think you'd get A LOT of cool ideas. Some of these things remind me GW2. Also, I want to buy this already. I honestly think I'd drop D&D for this. Would you create an adaptation guide to adapt 5e content to DC20?
We need an arcane gish. 5e has it smeared all over fighter, wizard, and warlock subclasses, none being quite the thing. Pathfinder has magus, and it just feels so right.
He did say subclasses were coming. And you can always strip the holy theme off a paladin and make their magic scholarly, primal, or innate instead of faith based. We’ll see soon enough though. It seems like DC is pumping along pretty hard for right now.
@@curts7801I kind of age with OP. The thing with magus is they get to use their physical attacks to make their spells land, which both gives them accuracy/crit boosts which let's them go beyond just damage to "I hit you with my greatsword and vines spring up to tie you down." It's some fun stuff.
There is one major thing I dislike about this system… ALL THE CLASSES ARE SOO GOOD I CAN’T CHOOSE, I love them all!!! Warlord & Monk are probably my ever so slight favorite. They are just so cool and unique. But every class has something that makes me go, “I want to play that” which is just so darn well done.
Very excited about the game. I backed it on kickstarter. Where are the details for the psion? I don’t see it listed in the documents that have. Thank you in advance.
I’ve been binge-watching your videos the past few days, and I gotta say DC20 might honestly be a paradigm shift in TTRPG design. I just bought the Alpha today, and I’m so excited to potentially get to play this! Any chance that the game will support solo or cooperative play? It’s a method of play that’s really in the rise in popularity, yet I still don’t see many systems natively cater to it.
My hope for the bard (and I hope you read this), is for it to be another half caster like paladin. However, rather than using its stamina for attack damage, it should be used for giving buffs to a friends, debuffs to foes, and bonuses to the bard for skill checks. And the bard should gain stamina from taking the help action. Keep the spell list minimal but allow the bard to cherry pick one spell from any list every number of levels or so to allow the bard to “spec out”. The balance can be that, as a half caster, it can’t battlefield control or spell blast as well as full casters. And it doesn’t get weapon or armor proficiencies, which will prevent the bard from outshining martials. Of course, you can simply make a warrior bard or spell focused bard by stealing talents from other classes.
I'm glad there was already another comment asking for this. But I love Artificers and I don't think I could play without them. Full video on Technomancers (please make this their class name) coming soon?
So if I understand this correctly, stamina is a resource that can be dynamically used and regained in combat, rather than just a lazy X number of times per day ability... sounds really interesting.
The DC20 system looks super promising. I though want to highlight that, Coach, you should be careful that the mechanics do not become too complex. Else I fear you land in a similar problem zone as 4E or 3E used to be. Don‘t get me wrong I also liked 4E a lot (mainly cause of fighters and warlords) but the number crunching was coming into the way of fast and easy play, without taxations. After 25 years DnD (AD&D to 5E) I feel that an awesome system mechanic to me should be a mix of: tactical combat, customisation options for creating flavourful character concepts (no best path) and lean mechanics for fast play. All in the context of heroic fantasy. I feel you have addressed a lot of those already. I hope the playtest will give you good insights were the mechanics might go too far. Good luck! And thank you for you’re inspiring ideas. I will definitely back this a soon as it comew to kickstarter!
If you are trying to mostly do a 5e compatible but improved system this sounds promising. On my side, I think I am looking for something a bit more different.
I am not familiar with what classes were in fourth edition, apparently the warlord was one of them, but I don’t know about the rest! I’ll have to look into that!!
@@TheDungeonCoach there's a list of classes in the wiki, if you ask me, for the warlord at least, try to make it as Temp HP healing for the sake of morale boosting instead of sheer bodily recuperation, but make it able to stack.
So does that mean your class specific "talents" are going to be equivalent to a first level class feature? That sounds like it could get overshadowed in either direction really quick
Freebie idea: I believe wizards should not only be able to copy spells from scrolls but may also be able to figure out spells being cast by others (some sort if a check) and then replicate them. They should also be able to analyze runes and long lasting spell effects (such as wards on doors, chests etc.) and potentially dismantling them
Idk about the fighter gettin adv on death saves dont know if it applies to the battlefield I do like that they get better on rolls throughout the battle but ideally i think that could be more of an subclss or capstone rather than a core feature Cus they already have second wind, action surge, and their techniques But its a fair add but id argue for not off the bat or have to make a choice for it Also Something i like is having non magical healing be classic temp hp It cant be stacked and it can make you more powerful than your limits Separates it from holy healing
I'm still not sure how I feel about the Monk. One of it's biggest issues was from a pure design perspective. All of the other classes, even yours, are setting agnostic, they can fit into any culture/setting. However, the Monk is specifically of Asian flavor; it sticks out like a sore thumb. Add onto that, every archetype you can think of for a monk fits into another existing class. Kensei or Open Palm? Fighter. Way of Shadows? Rogue. 4 Elements? Druid. Drunken Master? Barbarian. Your monk sounds fun, but it still doesn't fit unless the game is set in fantasy asia. The Ranger changes sound nice though, it should have always felt like you were playing a Witcher, which this sounds like it might.
Allow me this thought, the term monk is more europian than asian, in term of someone living in a monastery, an abbey, cultivating a simple life of self-cultivation. Furthermore, there was martial artists all over the world. Yes, pop culture went us to think martial arts = Far East, but like Africa has great martial arts thrhough its whole continent. And one of my favorite fiction has a european fighting monk: as much a Robin Hoods might be the leader of the Merry Men, 'tis Little John that I envisaged actually forming the band on how to fight... and he'll kick thy ass, yet I do not see an ounces of asian style in him, even if he'll be going around with the dozen of barrels that he self-brew.
On keeping creative and thinking outside the box... The only thing I'm worried about from what I've seen in DC20 is how things have bene conceptualized according to boxes a bit like Pathfinder. I call Pathfinder "Classfinder"... the class fantasy is hard baked into the rules. The features play a huge role and those serve to make very specific class concepts happen. For one example, most of my Clerics aren't about being church templars and I have no use for most of the features of that when I want to try to make a warrior with some of the hybrid-mu possibilities which make the rules for Clerics in 5e great.
Please tell me eventually you will add another Gish class. The Paladin is okay and all, but I want to be a fighter that studies the arcane to enhance his battlefield performance. He's a seasoned general that learned to listen to the mages, or a soldier that inherited his father's curiosity for the mystical arts. Or a mercenary that learned magic simply because it was useful for some jobs. But I need my arcane warrior archetype!
Hey, quick question. Will there be a martial “mage-hunter”? A martial class dedicated to combating magic spells? You could even do their civil ability (like barbarians insta-crit on inanimate objects) as a weak, but constant, magic sense.
Now I just want to know what are minion class options? Minion classes. Someone who controls Elementals, Beasts, Spirits, Undeads or Demons. Perhaps even someone who can lead followers but that usually don't fit well with TTRPGs. Wizard Necromancer using Animate Dead Druid casting Conjure Animal Ranger Beast Master (Personally we run that the beast has brain and will kill your enemies without needing an attack command) Warlock Pack of the Minion Rogue Arcane Tricskter Find Familiar There are two ways to take this. You have one single powerfull minion or many weak minions. Quality vs Quantity. But also in some cases like PF2e Summoner people say the Minion takes the center light of the whole class and makes you the player feel secondary to that, but that is something I enjoy.
I’m intrigued to see how subclasses will function such as Eldritch knight no longer suffering from M.A.D (multiple attribute dependency) This is probably too early to ask but will each class have an equal number of subclasses or will the amount vary by class?
Is stamina restored between encounters? If it isn't, how do you prevent "bag of rats" problems? (Example: a barbarian brings a bag of rats to make attacks on to get stamina back.)
@@GrimViridian a well-built system covers it's butt. You want RAW and RAI to be as close as possible to eachother. And why would it be stupid with a bag of rats and not stupid when you are fighting rats in the sewers? If I were talking to a GM running the game, absolutely the right call is making a common sense ruling. But we're talking to the game DESIGNER. This is the kind of feedback good designers want.
Is there a level cap? I know this question seems like it should have an obvious answer but I've not heard it discussed. I can truly envision some broken multi-class builds, from what I've heard discussed, without it.
My friends and I are thinking about doing a campaign with this ruleset but we have to get everyone on board to try something new or stick with 5e. I see that you mentioned paladin in the video, but I'm looking at DC20 PLAYTEST RULES PREVIEW on your site and I dont see paladin listed anywhere. Is there a place I can see it. Or is this class locked behind a paywall.
Is there any chance the Ranger in DC20 can be a melee focused Martial? I am so over pew pew Ranger. In the Lord of the Rings books Aragorn never uses a bow.

I'm a might "magic man" so my magic comes from within me
I'm a int "magic man" so my magic come from study.
Love that you put in a psionic class.
I'm glad I watched til the end to hear about artificer
I'm so hyped to see how the alpha evolves!!
Really looking forward to seeing this in print.
100% yes 👍🏼
@@TheDungeonCoach then I will be 100% watching with great interest!
Getting Stamina back from unspent action points is just resting , which doesnt seem very monk like.
You don't meditate in combat.
Ranger sounds so awesome! I totally envision a vampire hunter a la Trevor Belmont etc
On my side, I think I am looking for something a bit more different.
love the magical sigil mechanic.
So with the “holy or unholy” thing for Clerics and Paladins, what happens if you serve a neutral or morally ambiguous deity?
Will you bring back the 4e classes, Coach?
I am not familiar with what classes were in fourth edition, apparently the warlord was one of them, but I don’t know about the rest! I’ll have to look into that!!
@@TheDungeonCoach there's a list of classes in the wiki, if you ask me, for the warlord at least, try to make it as Temp HP healing for the sake of morale boosting instead of sheer bodily recuperation, but make it able to stack.
Hi. I recently bought the Alpha rules. How does Stamina Recovery work for characters that take the Multiclass Improvement Talent?
So does that mean your class specific "talents" are going to be equivalent to a first level class feature? That sounds like it could get overshadowed in either direction really quick
Freebie idea: I believe wizards should not only be able to copy spells from scrolls but may also be able to figure out spells being cast by others (some sort if a check) and then replicate them. They should also be able to analyze runes and long lasting spell effects (such as wards on doors, chests etc.) and potentially dismantling them
Idk about the fighter gettin adv on death saves dont know if it applies to the battlefield
I do like that they get better on rolls throughout the battle but ideally i think that could be more of an subclss or capstone rather than a core feature
Cus they already have second wind, action surge, and their techniques
But its a fair add but id argue for not off the bat or have to make a choice for it
Also Something i like is having non magical healing be classic temp hp
It cant be stacked and it can make you more powerful than your limits
Separates it from holy healing
Then I think you’ll love the new class updates coming in 0.7!!
I might actually play a Rogue in this. I like the status condition play
Will you be making a fully digital version of character sheets and rules on something like Demiplane or something?
I have to admit, I miss a bard/minstrell type of character in this line up. Any plans for that?
Any plans for a summoner/beastmaster class or a druid/shapeshifter class?
Are we also getting a Warlock type class at some point?
Now I just want to know what are minion class options?
Minion classes. Someone who controls Elementals, Beasts, Spirits, Undeads or Demons. Perhaps even someone who can lead followers but that usually don't fit well with TTRPGs.
Wizard Necromancer using Animate Dead
Druid casting Conjure Animal
Ranger Beast Master (Personally we run that the beast has brain and will kill your enemies without needing an attack command)
Warlock Pack of the Minion
Rogue Arcane Tricskter Find Familiar
There are two ways to take this. You have one single powerfull minion or many weak minions. Quality vs Quantity.
But also in some cases like PF2e Summoner people say the Minion takes the center light of the whole class and makes you the player feel secondary to that, but that is something I enjoy.
I’m intrigued to see how subclasses will function such as Eldritch knight no longer suffering from M.A.D (multiple attribute dependency)
This is probably too early to ask but will each class have an equal number of subclasses or will the amount vary by class?
Ooh! Psion! Exciting!
Is there stuff like subclasses or is it more a mix of options so you can mix and match to make the theme you want?
The only thing I'm on the fence about is that the Cleric doesn't have a Nature-y druid-expy.
Bringing back the Warlord? Sign me up coach! I've always wanted to heal people by complimenting/berating them.
Is stamina restored between encounters? If it isn't, how do you prevent "bag of rats" problems? (Example: a barbarian brings a bag of rats to make attacks on to get stamina back.)
Thats easy, have the dm enforce the good ole "no thats stupid" rule XD
@@GrimViridian a well-built system covers it's butt. You want RAW and RAI to be as close as possible to eachother. And why would it be stupid with a bag of rats and not stupid when you are fighting rats in the sewers? If I were talking to a GM running the game, absolutely the right call is making a common sense ruling. But we're talking to the game DESIGNER. This is the kind of feedback good designers want.
@@quincykunz3481 oh no I get what you're saying, but at the end of the day ttrpg rules are always just guidelines anyway
Regarding metamagic, how is it different from the MP/AP augmentations that spells come with?
Is there a vid where stamina is explained more in depth?
Is there a level cap? I know this question seems like it should have an obvious answer but I've not heard it discussed. I can truly envision some broken multi-class builds, from what I've heard discussed, without it.
Genuine question Is there any plans for like a summoning like class
Will we be getting a Warlock class?
My friends and I are thinking about doing a campaign with this ruleset but we have to get everyone on board to try something new or stick with 5e. I see that you mentioned paladin in the video, but I'm looking at DC20 PLAYTEST RULES PREVIEW on your site and I dont see paladin listed anywhere. Is there a place I can see it. Or is this class locked behind a paywall.
The differing mechanics around Stamina reminds me of Iron Heroes.
So, is this system intended to work in tandem with D&D, or separate?
This is completely its own system, it will just feel familiar while you play it. 👍🏼
@@TheDungeonCoach awesome! Would it be hard to slot in things like monsters from other d20 systems?
Is there any chance the Ranger in DC20 can be a melee focused Martial? I am so over pew pew Ranger. In the Lord of the Rings books Aragorn never uses a bow.
