  • I can't believe it's taken me this long to listen/react to Cat Stevens. His voice instantly grabbed me. This song is timeless and will always be relatable. Its message almost reminds me of "Making Plans for Nigel" by XTC. You can't force your kid/s to follow the path you want them to take. At the end of the day, it's up to them. Also, Cat was a good-looking fellow back in the day.
    Thanks for watching!

I lost my father suddenly 41 years ago today. I was 11 years old. Every time I listen to this song, I wonder what he would have said to me during my adolescence and young adulthood. Maybe not much because he was the quiet type, but maybe a simple word could have changed what I became. I will never know. But I knew he loved me and that's the most important thing. Son❤Father

Every time I hear him (or James Taylor, Simon and Garfunkel, Harry Chapin, John Denver) I’m magically transported back to the 70s in the back of my parent’s car.
All of that music was so moving, emotional, soothing and in my opinion eternal (timeless as you said). More of all these artists please!

It's over 40 years ago, but I can still vividly remember the first time I heard this song.

Cat has some powerful stuff. "Oh very young" and "The first cut is the deepest" are also great.

I had ugly man tears when this song came on during a scene in Guardians of the Galaxy volume 2. I lost my father as a boy and always sought a father figure as I grew up. Guardians hit me hard with those themes in the film…then to accentuate the moment with this song? I lost it completely in the theater. A sobbing mess.

*This song is 54 years old.* Except for the fact that back then it seems there were many more parent-child (not just father-son) abrasions as children grow up and begin making their own decisions, it's aged beautifully.
--- > I was 12 when this song came out in 1970 on the Tea for the Tillerman album. Pretty much everyone everywhere bought it as soon as it appeared in the stores. (This was WAY before the internet.) I still know all the words to almost every song he put out. That's the staying power of meaningful songs, right there. ❀
-- -- > I had really great, understanding, supportive parents back in the day, and we still found generational stuff difficult at times.
-- -- -- > My own children are 35 and 27; and despite everything I know, and how I wanted to be to/for them, and all my better intentions, I still found myself on the other side of these kinds of interactions a time or two. The most important thing is to listen to each other - to really *hear* each other.
    But, sometimes, both sides hurt.

Great reaction! I share your feelings about it. This is truly a song that always moves me, even after decades of listening to it. Cat Stevens lived a period of peak that was very short but very intense. He recorded good albums later, but nothing that compares to Teaser and the Firecat and Tea For The Tillerman, two wonderful albums. You can play any song from these albums without error. But, as you liked Stevens' voice, I suggest for a next reaction two of his most famous hits, Wild World and Where Do The Children Play.

Hi Nick, have you ever heard of the Northern Irish band The Divine Comedy? They became famous in the 90s and have done so many great songs, try "Our Mutual Friend". I guess you like it. Maybe ...
