I think everyone, no matter what political beliefs or race, should read his book Starry Messenger. I've read it and can say that it is the most life changing and approaches many aspects of humanity from a neutral standpoint.
I've told this story before, but I listened to the Apollo 8 audiobook "Rocket Men" in the car. I'd been listening for about 2 hours as I was driving into the mountains and I reached my destination, which was a secluded place in a valley tucked away between mountain towns, so the sky gets pretty dark. I arrived, turned off the vehicle, and let my eyes adjust as easily 3000+ stars and the Milky Way came into view. The only reason I didn't step out of the car to feel the crisp crystal clear mountain air was because I had just gotten to the part of the book where Borman, Lovell, and Anders began reading Genesis for their Christmas Eve telecast. I was in tears, to put it mildly. I'll never forget it. Great book, too :)
I was a young man (13) when the Apollo 8 mission was announced. Dad worked in aerospace and immediately told me to discount the announcement, "we're not ready!" But they launched and away they went. We had no idea what to expect when this broadcast began. The living room was excited that Xmas Eve. But grew very quiet to listen. It was an incredible event.
This has got to be my favorite video of all year .. thank you for what you do.. you sir are not just a National Treasure and asset you are a worldwide treasure and asset! The way you communicate this stuff and make it understandable for people like me is much appreciated.
I'm from Australia; my home state is Tasmania in the South of our nation. I was only 10 and a half years old when Apollo 8 entered orbit around the Moon. It was December 25th early Christmas morning here in Australia, still Christmas Eve in the US as we're 15-16+ hours ahead of the US time-wise. I remember watching it live on TV with my parents on a 21-inch B&W television because that was all we had back then. I was mesmerized as I saw the Moon up close with its craters that seemed so big to me. The Apollo 8 crew would describe some of the Moon's features like Rilles and some of the names of the craters. Apollo 8 did 10 orbits of the Moon but the the thing I remember the most is the time Apollo 8 came around the back side of the Moon and there it was Earth seemingly rising above the Moon. It was so awesome to see the Earth, with its continents and huge bodies of Ocean. It is something that I'll never forget until the day I die.... Pete from Tasmania here in Australia.... 🌍🌎🌏 🚀 🌑🌓🌔🌕🌖🌗🌘
I recently discovered a channel that covers restoring the technology used on the Apollo missions to transmit video and audio back to Earth. I find the technical stuff a little more relatable than the theological stuff but I can appreciate it. Always happy to see new content from my hero NDT
I have the audio book, I love the audio book, the beginning of this video made me chuckle a bit, because i know you had to take those glasses off and put em there, specifically to put them back on for the recording.😅 great video, btw!!
I recall this photos release and the way it made most people reevaluate how we thought about our little rock. You can think what you like but we all share this little rock in the vastness of space and our world leaders ought to learn this.
I was glad to see a nice, short StarTalk for me to enjoy as I retire for the evening. The reading was quite soothing but that "SHUT THE F%#K UP!" nearly threw me off the bed laughing 😂😂😂.
Beyond simply beautiful, I found this to be very profound. As a child of the sixties, this brings back vivid memories of a uniquely impactful time in our country's history. I remember being glued to the screen of our little black-and-white television screen when Apollo began its missions. I watched Neil Armstrong's first step on the Moon. I remember my Uncle in his military Marine uniform, laid in a glass coffin for his funeral, having been shot to death in Viet Nam in 1968. I was too little to understand the civil unrest in our own country, let alone the reasons behind war. But I understood how important our space program was at the time, because I was hearing the announcer say that actual space travel and landing on the moon was a huge step forward for humanity. It was a very big deal. It united people all over the world in ways that we very much needed. And still do today. -- Thank-you Neil, for bringing this important perspective to us. Wishing you & everyone here a wonderful & Happy New Year!!🎉🎊❤💫✨
Neil, you have an AMAZING channel...PLEASE consider contacting UA-cam to express that their new policy of forcing viewers to watch 4 minutes worth of ads before they can see the videos will cause unsubscribers and skipping of videos. Lately, I click on my favorite channels such as yours, only to see that I must endure VERY long ads before I can watch. I find that I am just skipping the video and moving on to another channel. This is NOT your fault, but you will suffer. PLEASE let UA-cam know that while we are willing to watch a few SHORT ads during your videos, 4 minute ads will ruin your channel...Again, keep up the great work!
This is a beautiful reading. My biggest dream has been to look back at the earth from space for as long as I can remember. I appreciate you and your work, Neil. I learn something new every time I listen to you speak.
I am moved to know of Mr Neil deGrasse Tyson. I wish I could say I knew him personally, that I could sit down and have a conversation with him or at the very least shake his hand. I find him to be a man of integrity open mindedness and conscience that would be characteristics that I truly wish more people had. Thank you Mr Tyson for sharing yourself with others. I believe you to be an exemplarily Good man!
This is amazing!!! It was mind expanding to say the least. The key is balance. Seeing things from the other's perspective. Living in the present to decide what is good. We have the power to choose after we explore and see for ourselves.
Merry Christmas everyone! This was beautiful. And even as a non-believer myself, I always felt the deeper message that the Apollo 8 crew sent with those verses. It is not about religion, it is about admiration for the beauty of space and the blue marble that our planet is. But then, I was born a few months later, after Apollo 11, so who am I to know how it felt? And yet I have always had a soft spot for the Apollo program.
I think it would be difficult to see something that was previously only seen by the gods; a tiny marble where all life that has ever existed, was born and died, and _not_ have a religious experience.
I had not even heard of this book until I came across this video. I'm glad I did! I was 11 years old when Apollo 8 orbited the Moon, and I remember watching the Earth rise on the TV: living in a community teaming with employees of the Manned Spacecraft Center and their contractors, how could I not? I find it impossible to describe the sense of awe and wonder I felt upon seeing those images. They still stir awe and wonder in me today. But back then, I remember voices in the news demanding to know why we were spending so much money on going to the Moon when we had so many problems back here on our little piece of rock surrounded by air that we call Earth. In the meantime, while voices were being raised about the increasing numbers of dollars and lives being expended upon the war in Vietnam, those voices hadn't yet risen loud enough to seriously work toward ending the bloodshed in Vietnam. We were still reckoning with the Civil Rights movement -- and seem bent on forgetting those lessons today. Nonetheless, I can still look up into the sky over Montgomery, Alabama and wonder: what would it feel like to actually stand on the Moon? To look back upon my home world as the Apollo astronauts did? And as I look up to the Moon as I drive my wife to work, words drift into my mind . . . "Cold hearted orb that rules the night . . . ."
I'm always happy to see that there are people whom religions didn't ruin their lives. But I ask those people not to ignore what religions did to others throughout history. There's a reason why religions were separated from state.
Stuff like this makes me believe in ppl even though it wasn't the force driving it but the love I see that can be it makes me feel alive again and survive!!
When Apollo 8 orbited the Moon and captured the iconic "Earthrise" photo, it offered humanity a profound new perspective: seeing Earth as a fragile, beautiful, and interconnected blue marble in the vastness of space. This moment marked the first time humans had seen their home planet from such a distance, igniting a global awareness of our shared responsibility to protect it. The image and the mission itself became symbols of both human achievement and the need for global unity in addressing the challenges we face on Earth. How did the Apollo 8 mission, particularly the "Earthrise" image, influence environmental movements and the global consciousness regarding the need to protect our planet? Could this perspective from space still inspire new approaches to solving today's environmental crises?
'we went to the moon to discover earth' -neil degrasse tyson when i look up at the dark night sky my brain fills up with exicitment, curiosity, and an incredible cosmic insignificance
I was three weeks shy of my thirteenth birthday on that Christmas Eve. Apollo Eight orbiting the moon had a profound impact upon me and my imagination: consider the possibilities. Yes, I acquired a poster size image of “Earth Rise” which hung on my wall during my high school and college years.
I was eight years old when the Apollo 8 mission was launched. I never got to se the images in full color as we had Black and White TV back then. But I remember being in such AWE that we as a species could travel the stars like our TV heroes Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers ( yes both were portrayed by Larry "Buster" Crabbe )and yes even Captain Kirk.
A couple of years ago that cosmic perspective, in part guided by Neil deGrasse Tyson, the brilliant astronomy textbook by Jeffery Bennett and others together with many scientists and authors really changed my life for the better. So great to be able to grasp at least some portion of that wider worldview.
I was watching, as a teenager, when (Walter Cronkite, I think) showed us the Earth as She is for the first time. My family was watching. We had a Quasar works-in-a-drawer color TV. We were all in tears of wonder seeing our planet for the first time - a shining blue ball, not a brown globe-looking thing. The astronauts reading the familiar creation story made it even more special. Really, it could have been any tradition's creation story. The vision of our astounding, blue planet brought it to life.
Every Christmas, I share that video of the reading of Genesis from Apollo 8 with my family, even though I am not religious because what the Apollo space program did was wake up all the people on Earth that Earth is our Home, just as Carl Sagan's speech, "Pale Blue Dot", did. ❤❤❤
Well done Mr. Tyson. You always produce a quality show, no matter if it's just a shameless plug for your book or just a well-intentioned, heartfelt message about your beliefs. I love it all. I'm a Baptist Christian and I always need intelligence, purity, and the truth. I've been a fan since hearing you on the Opie & Anthony show back in the day...when they were still on the air...maybe 2012 maybe? Anyway, YOU are a great astrophysicist, writer and have a brilliant mind. Please keep doing what you do. I was a PEST, now I'm only seeking out informative and inspirational avenues in my life. Seek the truth, no matter what. PEACE.
Dr. Tyson, Sir. My name is Seth a 32 year old from Philadelphia, PA and I’ve enjoyed listening to you for many years. I hope my message to you truly resonates with you. I believe in all of my heart, mind, and soul that the Lord is working in you! I believe He wants you to know Him more than you ever have. I would love for you to read the Book of John. I would love to hear you someday on StarTalk telling the world of listeners - how the Lord changed your life. Amen.
you write a good book :), a recent thought i have a lot is that when we finally mine all the mineral deposits, drill all the oil and destroy the last acre of rain forest, we might realize that biodiversity is the only thing we can't just ship from somewhere else in the solar system. it would be a pretty wild tragedy if we discovered interstellar travel, but destroyed the basis of sustainable life on earth, so we would then set off into the universe, not looking for technology or gold or anything silly like that, but animals, plants and diversity, for all we know it is the most valuable commodity there is long term.
having learned about the cosmos as a whole i am certain a being of higher power exists for our sake. the beauty in the cosmos, the world i'm on, and many MANY other things. yes a being exists and i feel a profound peace settle over me. a peace i really wish I knew how to share
There absolutely has to bee more subscribers to you. I would suggest... everyone who has internet access. And then, I hope, everyone else that can read or hear your message. God Bless. Merry Christmas one day late. Happy New Year. I'm so glad you are here on this planet at the same time as myself.
Hey Neil! Can you maybe do an episode explaining the theory of a white hole? And maybe anwsering the most asked questions like "what if a white hole collided with a black hole?" Or "What would happen if the sun was replaced with a white hole?" Please i need this in my life.
I have so much too say, but Neil also says many right things. Then I think we are better off with his thoughts, mine is just pure speculation while he is THE Specialist! Marry Christmas. Thank you for your work Neil.
I will definitely have to get this book! I thoroughly enjoy all of your shows, and your personal insights on many different topics! When I was young, I used to watch Jack Horkheimer of the Miami Space Transit Planetarium on PBS just before it signed off for the day. I ended up watching it up until his passing in 2010. I can still hear him signing off reminding us "to keep looking up!" I lost a bit of my love for the cosmos after his passing, but with so much going on with space travel; i.e. private companies in the likes of Spacex and Blue Origins, and discovering your many shows and StarTalk... I have found my love of space all over again. Thank you for sharing your incredible knowledge with the world, making us laugh, and for just being a great human being! Wishing you all the best in the New Year Neil DeGrasse Tyson!
Which is your favorite chapter from Starry Messenger?
mine will be delivered Thursday from amazon :) can't wait
You really are an ispierering person!!
I hope u will live long and enjoy your cosmic ride!!
What is your opinion Neil? Can you say Merry Christmas on the air? How did you associated Christmas to your masterpiece of the night [shut the f...p]?
The one that was just read, so far anyway I’ve only begun reading it today ;)
Definitely chapter 5 or coda
Neil is such a brilliant science communicator. I could never get tired of listening to him.
HE will never get tired of listening to him. 🤷
Id rather listen to wet cow farts!
A beautiful reading... including the F-bomb. I got chills❤
It hits different from a genius lol
I think everyone, no matter what political beliefs or race, should read his book Starry Messenger. I've read it and can say that it is the most life changing and approaches many aspects of humanity from a neutral standpoint.
Is there somewhere to get it free? I would love to read it but I am poor!
Happy holidays! 🎉
@paulvamos7319 i got it from Audible at the time it was 3 free picks at the trial. Niel narrates it
Should be in a library if you have one nearby.

I have found my love of space all over again. Thank you for sharing your incredible knowledge with the world, making us laugh, and for just being a great human being! Wishing you all the best in the New Year Neil DeGrasse Tyson!
