    Thank you so much for your videos on the 257! I inherited one from my Aunt 30 years ago. Now I'm realizing all the things I need to be doing to really maintain this machine. (Older and "wiser" now?!)

    Thank you for this video !! I just bought my off of Facebook market today and it’s runs perfectly, my question is how often do one need to oil and clean the motor?

    • @mementosbyheather
      @mementosbyheather  3 місяці тому

      The motor itself does not require any maintenance or oil. It is completely enclosed with all the lubrication it will need. So, in theory, it should all stay within the unit. As far as maintaining your machine, I would suggest a quick clean and lube after every major project.

    You could check the condition of the rubber belt underneath the machine. I had to replace mine a while back as the Fashion Mate is an older machine. Very easy to do.

    Hello! Can you help me. I have this same sewing machine but it has a problem. The needle bar doesn't move sideways.

    Just got this machine today... only issue seems to be the presser foot pressure. I can't move the wheel at all. It's like it's completely stuck. Any suggestions?

    Hi, I recently bought this machine from a Goodwill and as I was sewing a test strip it suddenly stopped working. I slid back the bobbin cover and noticed the large wheel under the bobbin casing isn’t rotating with the motion of the needle like it’s supposed to. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this issue, or do you know of anyone who might? Thanks in advance!

      Hey there! Congrats on a great find! What you're describing is very common and easily remedied, so proceed with confidence :) It sounds to me that you have a timing issue between the hook (the part you described that doesn't move properly) and the needle. This is known as hook timing, and it is very common that they go out of sync. I would recommend watching any timing video by a gentleman on UA-cam known as "AndyTube." Here is a video of his featuring drop-in bobbin style machine with a timing issue: ua-cam.com/video/cHkqoYYlvRE/v-deo.htmlsi=-w6Zat40tNaStwaB
      Best of luck!

    15:30 You do not need to remove this screw. You just have to lift up the arm with your finger and turn the arm to the right. Then you can release the Bobbin case...

      Yes lol you're right. I noticed others doing that in their videos before I realized mine could do it as well haha Good eye.

    What oil do you need to use to oil the machine ?

    • @mementosbyheather
      @mementosbyheather  4 місяці тому

      Any oil labeled "sewing machine" oil will do. It is also referred to as "lily white" sewing oil sometimes. The brand of oil truly doesn't matter so long as it is labelled for sewing machines.

    What bobbins does this machine use

    • @mementosbyheather
      @mementosbyheather  5 місяців тому

      Class 66 bobbins. You may choose metal ones or plastic ones -- your choice.

    Hi, I just recently bought this machine. However I couldn’t get the needle bar move, it seems got stuck. Do you happen to know how to possibly solve the problem or where I could find more information about it? Thanks

    Hi again, another question for you since you’re the only person that seems to have the same machine that I have…there is one plastic gear in an impossible to reach place (I believe it’s called the vertical shaft). My question is have you ever had any problems with yours? Is there a way to check the condition of the gear?

    • @mementosbyheather
      @mementosbyheather  8 місяців тому +1

      Hey there! I am familiar with the vertical shaft, but I have not had any trouble with mine. There is a gentleman on UA-cam by the name "AndyTube" who has serviced and replaced virtually every machine and machine part. I ran a quick search and found that he has a 2-hour masterclass on vertical shafts. However, it's not a quick or easy job. Are you having a specific issue with the machine, or are you just wondering about that gear? I recently worked on a Singer 404 with a misaligned bobbin hook. It drove me crazy and I did a lot of troubleshooting for it. I digress. The point is that sometimes the solution isn't as complex as it seems, especially if there are consistent symptoms. Let me know what's going on. Perhaps I can point you in the right direction. In short, AndyTube has taught me everything I know from his videos so I would start there if I can't diagnose the problem for you.

      Thank you! Andy tube is great, already a subscriber 😊 so far I don’t see any problems with my vertical shaft I’m just worried that it will break on me since it’s never been replaced and in my model there is no way to get to it unless I drill a hole in the iron. I’m going to use it as is until it fails and go from there. Appreciate your help!

    Do you happen to have the link to the LED replacement bulb that you bought?

    • @mementosbyheather
      @mementosbyheather  8 місяців тому

      Hi there! I bought my bulb from a local sewing repair shop so I do not have a link, but the model number is “2PCW-LED.” Plug that model number into google and choose your preferred vendor. I paid around $15 bucks for it in person if that helps with fair pricing. If you don’t like any of the vendors on google, you may prefer to shop on eBay. I tend to have the best luck sourcing parts on eBay if I can’t find a good deal elsewhere. Just be sure to verify whether your bulb is a screw-in or bayonet style. Mine is a bayonet or “push-in” style. If yours is screw-in, that’s a different story. If all else fails, see if you can find a local sewing repair shop who can point you in the right direction. Hope that helps! :)
