corfe Mullen looks freezing....! good video. learnt these yesterday.....came on here to get a few pointers. Found the same thing about putting weight on back foot, but also having front foot back behind the bolts. this helped me with the dipped stall.
I see some guys at my local skatepark really locking it in the stall like a fakie bs/fs. The come up the ramp and their front stays under the coping whiteout pivoting it over it, and then slam the back on the coping. Like a little slide with the bs on the coping. I've been practicing it like you are doing, and the times I get them like that, they still feel like a semi bs pivot. Would be cool to do a follow up and try it like that:-), I've not managed locking them in that way yet. Bending the back leg really helps regardless and improved them for me, thanks for the video!
This s something I do all the time, but lads we have to accept that a smith by definition needs your rail to touch the coping, and for that you need either a bigger ramp or much tighter transition. This video shows dipped pivots. Probably good practice for learning smiths though.
Awesome video Jon, I’ve got a question. What made you opt for your style of setup (shaped deck, wide wheels ect.)? I was wondering what to do as im getting into transition a bit but I still want to be able to do flatground tricks. Btw you have to be one of the best skateboard youtubers out there, you explain things so well after each attempt and show us what you did wrong and what to do right, a true teachers mentorship. You are quite the inspiration skating and makes me feel hopeful bc i feel like i picked up skating too old to be any good later on.
John Appleseed many thanks for the great feedback John! I have spent a bit of time experimenting and I have found that a 9inch board with a 15inch wheelbase works well for me. I am 6,3” and 85kg with size 11 feet so a larger setup works better. The main thing I’ve found is anything will work and you can drive yourself mad worrying about what to tweak. The setup I have settled on inspires the confidence and that I guess is the key. If you feel confident in the setup then there is nothing to blame. It’s all personal preference I recon and there are examples of guys ripping on every setup imaginable. You are never too old I think, there are local riders round here in their late 50s who totally rip and they don’t look like stopping anytime soon !! Go for it and let me know how you get on !!
David Kruse many thanks for tuning in. Yes, I really like the AA deck. I’m quite tall with size 11 feet so the 15inch wheelbase and 9inch size feels really good to me.
KC yes, bend the back knee and pivot off it, this helps back the wheel against coping, I’m working on a longer stall with these at the mo. The frontside seems easier to lock in and stall on?
@@JonBishopSkate I got it. It requires a little more pressure on back foot than normal. A quicker turn did help but that's also a little sketchier to turn quick. ua-cam.com/video/nUw1raDVTEk/v-deo.html
Super helpful video man! I've had smiths down for almost a year on anything from 1-5 foot but I just can't shake the habit of using my heel as support. The worst part for me is going back in and possibly hanging up! Would you say it happens to you often? I ride a 9.25 board with 58mm wheels, so I'm hoping my board will just roll back in nicely over any sized coping.
Hey dude Many thanks for tuning in! Yeah that video was a while back now so I’ve had chance to finesse these a bit. I also did a more recent video on the fakie backside Smith which is essentially the same technique for stalling and for re-entry, so you may wish to check that one out ? ua-cam.com/video/d5usAoeuckk/v-deo.html I think the key for the stall with no front foot heel safety net is to put all the pressure on the heel of a bent back leg and the front leg pushing away straighter to keep the body upright. To stop the hang up, try to hop off the back foot toes with no pressure on the heel. It’s the rocking of the back foot heel and toe pressure which will help the lock and release. At least that’s how I do them, and the toeside backwheel should by right up against the coping. You are right to be careful, the slam when these hang up is defo one of my least favourites!! Let me know how you get on!!
@@JonBishopSkate Thabks a lot for your response man! Super helpful. Am going to an indoor park this weekend so will give these a try on the mini there. Smiths looks so badass so really wanna get them down
@@JonBishopSkate brilliant! I like the way the music changes when you are try stuff out, when you are getting close, then when you make the trick. Awesome!
@@BlackMarketHoney ha, I’ve had fun with it, I never thought anyone would notice lol, for some reason some of the tracks feel more perilous and others more triumphant (not by design) it fascinates me how some tracks will fit a sequence and some will not. I never know till I drop them in, so it’s trial and error, and of course subjective. In my recent edits I’ve been more adventurous, experimenting with the cuts being in time, and things like the rhythm of the wheels knocking down starting the tune being integrated ??
Yeah, just poor technique on my part. Since recording this I’ve got more of the feel of driving off the back toes to come back in and being mindful of taking any pressure off the back heel, it generally works out fine ?!!
@@JonBishopSkate Go for it. Just practice 180 ollies while rolling along on concrete, then take it to the ramp. Stay centred above the board, or you'll slip out when you land on the coping. You got this!
Showing your learning process is awesome. Really helps out!
Many thanks for tuning in dude!

Top work, fella me lad.
Bad news for you though...skateparks are going to be full everyday for next 16 weeks now schools off.

Yeah man, this was recorded right at the start of the channel so I should do a follow up. I pop out of them now F/S and B/S to stop any hang ups.
