- Annie Kwon has been awarded 1st Place in the Classical Category of the 2023 Pianist Amateur Piano Competition!
38-year-old Annie is a homemaker and piano teacher from California, USA. Competition judge Kathryn Page commented, "An extremely persuasive performance, Annie communicates all the musical needs with beauty of sound and effortless control. Bravo!"
Annie plays:
- Arno Babajanian: Elegy
- Jean Sibelius: 13 Pieces, Op 76 No 2 Etude
- Franz Liszt: Widmung, S. 566 (After Schumann)
- Domenico Scarlatti: Sonata K 141 in D minor
2nd Place is awarded to German filmmaker Michael Nagel, while 3rd Place goes to Zachary Weiner, a software engineer at Google. A big thank you to everyone who entered!

How is someone who gets paid to teach music classed as an "Amateur"? The word literally means "for love" whereas "professional" means "a person engaged in a specified activity as a main paid occupation rather than as a pastime."

She plays very well. Am happy she won but as an participant of the amateur competition last year, don't think this was ted fair that she won since she's a piano teacher who probably went through rigorous music academy 😅

By the way, how brave to play the Scarlatti sonata. This is a piece that Martha Argerich often plays as an encore in concert. Those repeated notes are devilishly difficult.

She doesn’t seem like an amateur to me. Do you mean anyone who don’t have a concert piano performance degree is an amateur 🤔
Hello 🖐🏽Our definition of 'amateur' for the competition consisted of those who do not derive an income from performing. We were looking for those that play as a hobby, or who have simply not had the time or money to turn their passion into a career!
