I just installed a goldring 1042 on a pro-ject x1.. for some reason it's literally jumping out of the groove. What a frustrating hobby this can be..

Checked the specs, perfectly suitable combination. That should not happen at all.
May I suggest you check these two videos, in this order:

      ua-cam.com/video/pkq_Q-ItevM/v-deo.html
The second video shows a more detailed look of something I explain in the first, but you may want to watch both :)

@@rollingtroll i'm pretty confident i set it up correctly.. even tried different VTF, VTA and AS settings.. i even tried to increase the tonearm mass with coins taped on top of it.. didn't do anything. It's just dancing and jumping no matter what i try

Interesting - ive just pre-ordered the Goldring E4 for my Project XI.. decided to change over from the Ortofon - PicKit which came with the X1 and to be fair its been a very good performer .. hope I dont regret moving away from Ortofon :(

@@ramblinginmeath4950 i think you will be fine.. I'm pretty sure i had a faulty cartridge because in general people have no issues with this combination.. i have heard great things about the E3 and E4 so i'm sure you will like it. I just switched to an Audio Technica VM750SH and it works like a charm.. Ortofon is pretty overrated in my opinion

Yeah those test records for resonance are interesting to look at, but you can also just make a recording of a regular record and check the FFT diagram for the resonance peak.
It's way more reliable than calculating it.
Measuring it with an FFT diagram is the most accurate, but even eyeballing it using a resonance test record is more reliable.
Most of them have a test tone on top of it, which starts audibly wavering at/near the resonance peak.
I made a video of it, it's a bit boring but it gets the idea across:

We already agree, i use a test record to eyeball the resonance frequency. How else did you think I'd do it? That being said, I see a 2m (compliance 22 at 10hz if I'm not mistaken) on a typical SL-1200 like arm (12 grams, usually) and I'm very sceptical about the resonance frequency of that combo.
That aside, even a good matching 2m I think is a waste of money. But people seem to buy them :D.

@@rollingtroll Yeah I meant it as an example; could be useful for other viewers.
And you're right, its resonance frequency isn't at 10Hz... that shows that eyeballing simply gives an idea if it's more or less in the ballpark, but it's not that accurate.
I've measured it using an FFT diagram to be about 8 or 8.5Hz, which is still higher than you'd expect from the specs.
This also telling for the quality of these 2M cartridges: they're not that accurately specified/made.
There's quite a bit of spread across 2M cartridges when it comes to their compliance and even output voltage.
The 2M Black for example is specified at 5mV, but mine outputs more like 6 or 6.5mV.
So yeah I agree, these 2M cartridges aren't that great... it was one of my first cartridges, so I didn't know any better back then...
As I always say: *Gaande weg leert men* 😉
I've even heard stories about people who had their cartridge pins come off their 2M cartridges when connecting/disconnecting the headshell wires!
Audio Technica offers way better value for the money, so I changed to "team AT" over the years... except for Ortofon Concordes, the older LOMC ones in particular... I'm just sucker for those haha

@@QoraxAudio I just don't get why people buy the 2M. There's the AT-VM95 series, the Goldring 2xxx series, the Nagaoka MP1xx/2xx series, the new Sumiko's, the good old Denon DL-110, Dynavector's 10x5. How on earth people end up with Ortofon, Shure or Stanton, I'll never get it.
That being said, sometimes you have freak matches. I have an old Lenco L76/s that somehow REALLY sings with a Stanton 500s. I don't know how, but it does. It was already in there, I tried loads of carts, and the Stanton just sounds 'nicest'. Maybe not best but 'nicest'.
As for ortofon; I think ortofon starts at about 700 euros. And the SPU series are absolute gems. I could use one for my EMT 928 but try and fit one to that. So I went AT-XP5 (so underrated, it's insane how good that thing sounds. It beats my Goldring 2400 in that player, which has a ridiculously heavy arm at 35 grams effective mass).

@@rollingtroll I agree on most of that, except for Shure... those cartridges are actually quite good, very neutral sound.
The Shure V15 type V with a Jico Microridge stylus is just great... very accurate!
However, they've become ridiculously expensive since Shure stopped production... way overpriced...

@@QoraxAudio May I ask which other cartridges you used? Also what's the compliance of the Jico stylus and in which arm are you using it?
(I already know I don't like the V15V, Jico or not. It's a muddy mess and barely better than the M97xe, but I am curious what your taste is).
