Thank you Jenna!. First time to your channel and I have learned so much in your first comments than I could have imagined. I had to learn to get to that deep meditative start because I have severe PTSD and severe chronic pain. I have always wanted to watercolor paint but had never found what you offer, I don’t have a problem getting to a deep state I just need to get some coaching. Thank you so much for entering my path, you, I will follow all the way down the mountain. 🙏🏼
I’m so glad you found my channel and my videos are so helpful to you! If you’re just learning watercolor, my video Complete Beginner’s Guide to Watercolor will give you everything you need to get started! It’s my most popular video, so it should be easy for you to find. 😉 happy painting! 💕
Jenna! This makes so much sense to me. For me no children at home any longer but I do have pets. I have the routine each morning to care for them. Then anything else such as business calls or needing to get groceries that day, those things do nag at me, not allowing my flow state. I didn’t know until right now that’s what’s happening. Worry fret fear and anxiety enter my world, most peoples’ I imagine, hence not allowing freedom to create. However on my best days hours can go by while painting, unaware… so if I’m understanding you correctly- that’s my flow state. I used to meditate daily and have shamefully not been but this video has reminded me of how good that is for me. Thank you. My apologies for such a long text, but m’lady… you’ve inspired me once again! I love you for this, I’m confident that’s okay to say.
@@artericson In the same boat! Now at home most of the time, chronic pain & once learned to meditate (found when painting) it’s like a meditation (as can say to myself) I will never be as good as her/him) & must unlearn the need to do only “perfect” art as not possible & get more frustrated! Ty for this needed way to relax & go with the flow!!
Hi! Holy Gucamole...I HAVE achieved Flow State since the beginning...In June I began to watercolor paint. Each time I paint, I find that time does not exist. Everything you said rings true...I create a clear space, have everything I want to use set out, "light" my battery candles and start my piano covers playlist. I usually paint at least 4 to 5 hours with no concept of time. Though I didn't know the name, I knew something special was happening 💕
I was a writer before getting into art. Writing itself put me in a state of effortless flow. With painting I am in flow when painting loose and a little less flowy when doing realistic botanicals. I've been studying flow for years. All your suggestions for getting into flow state are wonderful. Looking forward to your Art Within course. This could so become your next book. ;)
Gratitude for igniting the flow & flow state discussion. My initial experience with accessing my flow state was blacking out during competitive (Masters) swimming. It always happens when swimming backstroke [my weakest of the four competitive strokes] over 50m or yards. I do not have any memory of those races or segments of the medley. I understood what it was when I read Betty Edwards’ example of highway driving & accessing the ability to work through complex math & or bank statements (Drawing on the Artist Within). In the past year, embracing the 🍏⌚️ Fit+ meditations & Emily Fletcher’s book has clarified so much for my journey. There is also the complementary (coupling or compound, forgive my engineering tendencies) point of finding space for Awareness & Focus (micro:macro::Focus:Awareness ?)
I never thought about what happens when I am creating, but I guess I am getting into flow state. I have found that when I engage in my art that I can think through and problem solve without getting emotionally invested in my thoughts. Art has become a therapy for me to process rather than perseverate. This is crucial to my mental health as a sufferer of depression, anxiety, CPTSD, and ADHD. My mind is always so busy and I am aware of every "channel" play in the background, but art helps turn down the volume.
Interesting. I work best in silence. My flow state is when I connect with the paint and water and paper. It is my language. Any meditation is focused on filling my mind with scripture and the language of beauty in the psalms. I have a great group of friends that paint together and for me it's a social time......I get creatively hindered by the presence of people as I end up focusing on what they are doing and then start to doubt my skills. I love my group but I paint all my best alone!!!!!
I’m pretty new to water color and it’s intimidating but I appreciate you helping me find confidence and inspiration and explaining things in a way that makes a lot of sense. You are an amazing teacher and I can tell you are a wonderful spirit❤ Just want to say Thank you!!!
Great thoughts to tap into Jenna! It's interesting how some paintings turn out in perfect flow and others are blocked. Music plays a big part in how fast I tap into flow state. For me hours of practice on techniques gave me the confidence to keep flowing!
Flow state is vital. We never discussed flow state when I was in college--I never heard the term before this video--but we knew the importance of having good music in the background when creating art. Anything to calm us and take the pressure off, so we could draw the life model or the still life in front of us. I found that having music like Miles Davis, Mozart, or The Beatles in the background helped a lot. Thanks for this reminder!
I might actually be doing this in my day job, & I've never thought about it that way until your description Jenna. Huh. I've known about this concept for years, but never connected it before. I need to think on this more ... and how convenient! a weekend of opportunity awaits! Maybe I'll do some painting while I ponder: double-down on the "flow"! Thanks for this! God bless! 😊
Okay, You hit it, SOUL is my FAVORITE movie and I get it. So much good insight and information from that little film. This is such a brilliant video. Sharing techniques and the reason why you want to get into "Flow State", well that's a game changer. I just discovered your channel and so appreciate your style of teaching. I don’t really consider my self a “creative” person but I’ve already done three paintings from your videos and I was so surprised at how good they came out 😃 I love your step by step videos and really appreciate that they don’t have super loud music (too distracting). Jenna, you hit the nail in the head. I dabble in calligraphy and I always feel peaceful. I keep telling everybody it's therapeutic and meditative. This video helped me understand EXACTLY what i experience when I write. Thanks a lot! (By the way, I've bought your book "Every day Watercolor'" through Amazon. It will be arriving today, maybe as I'm writing this🙂)

As a fellow ADDer I rely on the flow state. I'm usually in it when painting, but often deal with imposter syndrome when I write, as I have higher expectations for my writing. Your tips on the flow state are great!
Thank you for this, great video! This helps me understand why I feel really good when I am drawing the subject before starting to paint. I guess I get into the flow state then because I feel really relaxed and happy. But when I pick up the paint brush it is mostly stress and frustration. Not the first brush strokes, that is usually joyful, but then I start judging the resultat and that puts me back in the alpha waves I think?
It's the same with computer programming. That is done best in a flow. So no ringing phones, no noise from the street, no instant messagers bleeping continually.
Great video! I will be watching it again. A lot of great info. I have been in flow state several times. ..I'll lose all track of time working in my studio and before I know it its 2 o'clock in the morning and I'm still groovin'. Love that. P.S. really like the color of your walls. Do you remember the brand and name of color by chance
I don't usually practice...I have a very impulsive mind and when I paint I have an idea of what I want to paint suddenly and then I go for it. Like the ramen bowl on my profile pic. Impulse painting from a couple days ago. Is it perfect? No because I'm not great at painting and have only been painting since March of this year off and on. But I was satisfied with it. I sometimes go a bit between paintings due to whatever. Like I did the Inktober day one then got hit with cluster hemiplegic migraines for the 5 days after Oct 1st which turned me off to Inktober because I felt like I would have to play catch up. I do feel stuck and blocked a lot or just super unmotivated to do anything until I feel like it. This is the main reason I'm hesitant about starting my own channel with videos because there is no WAY I can stick to a schedule with my brain. My videos would be super sporadic. I've tried to force myself to just swatch or practice and just hated it and didn't want to turn myself off to painting all together you know? So practicing usually just isn't for me.
@@AbraCassandraCrafts Hi there- fellow migraine sufferer for 25 years. Chronic. I feel your pain. I wanted to share with you I am getting relief from a protocol from the Stanton Migraine Protocol. I have had a 50% reduction in my migraines and I haven’t even done the entire protocol yet. Best wishes and happy painting.
To me finding inspiration and motivation to start painting is harder than getting into flow state. Because once I do that difficult first move, by default I get into flow state (at least 80% of times) but how do we get that spark back? How do we get the inspiration , the creativity, my mind currently is blocked from all the stress in my daily life and I barely have time to paint :(
Recently I did a flower paintingin that I did flower first ...then used wax resist over flower.... then did background easily...so I realized no need for negative painting in any painting.whats your opinion?
Excellent insight! Thanks for the tips on how artists can access our greater potential! Maybe part of our brain is always engaged in the process of art, even while we are occupied with other things. It happens in problem solving all the time, when we meditate on a puzzling question, and part of the mind solves it. The hard part is extracting the solution from the superficial noise that distracts us.
