He specifically forsake it in order to be the father to his family of pirates, and he explicitly says the one piece is real. We also know from pretty recent chapters that whatever the one piece was, it was a thing that existed and that the Roger Pirates found. We don't know if it was maybe the knowledge of the void century or something they picked pieces up of along the way, but we do know it was a thing that exists.
