This song was actually one from WW1. During the Nazi regime it was being shunned as being "unpatrioric" and forbidden. A young wounded German soldier in WW2 had told this to Marlene Dietrich after he had sung the 1st verse to her in an American field hospital in France, where wounded German POWs were treated as well. Marlene Dietrich was there with the USO to entertain the American combat troups. After that day shw sang Lili Marleen in every USO show she performed in at the front lines to defy Hitler's order to prohibit this song. It became one of her iconic songs.
