This is a build that I did a couple of years ago.
Not a fantastic kit, but I did my best to make a nice Shiden Kai out of it. One of my favorite WWII aircrafts!

Beautiful build! You have great skill in staying true to scale, keeping me locked into the details and wanting to explore the plane. Thanks for sharing this with us!

Thanks Jeff, it's an awesome aircraft. It had a novel feature, Automatic Combat Flaps. They increased the handling performance in dogfights making it possible to outturn opponents in some cases.

Feb. 15, 2022----Like others have said, great looking build. Started building models back in '74 when I returne3d from Panama while in the Air Force. Back then, the "big dogs" were Revell, Monogram and Airfix, with Hasegawa & Tamiya being the new kids on the block. I still have a bunch of both kits unbuilt in my stash from that time frame. Thing is, Hasegawa & Tamiya DIDN'T make state of the art kits back in the early days. I've got more than one of their kits with L shaped landing gear, doughnut tires, a pilot with a slot in its back, with you putting the pilot in a peg....that was it for "detail". But what the hell, they were the only ones I knew producing JAPANESE WW 2 aircraft, so HAD TO have them of course.
Then came the "fun" part....finding information on them. Remember, back then, NO internet, etc. Only "reference" you could usually find was in Air Classics for example. Then I discovered FAOW, a series of soft covered books written in Japanese. BUT, they did have photos and detail drawings to at least give you an idea of what needed to be where. FAOW means Famous Aircraft Of the World and I have 100 or so of them for reference.
What's surprised me a lot is many modelers not jumping on the 3D printing bandwagon. Imagine learning CAD to design and print a complete cockpit for this and so many other kits in resin. For example, redoing the engine on this kit. And I think the owner of Planes of Fame in Chino, Calif. sold his George to some Japanese guys (ex-George pilots?) around 30-40 years ago because he was hurting for cash. Due to corrosion, it's not flyable, but it was restored. Of course, there's that other George they pulled from some Japanese bay and that video is on YT. And back then, the Planes of Fame was ENTIRELY different. Like one of the hangars was used to raise chickens after WW 2 ended, with only some of the more valuable aircraft inside it. The rest? Just sitting outside, exposed to the weather. Thanks for the video.

Thank you very much! Glad you liked the build. Yes, this is probably my favorite Japanese WWII fighter and I plan to build the Hasegawa 1/48 kit at some point.
3D CAD and printing is slowly starting to gain momentum in the hobby, but there is a threshold with buying a 3D printer and also designing your own parts from scratch.

@@KillBoxScalemodelling Feb. 16, 2022---I'm 68 and TRYING to learn cad, but it's been kicking my ass. As to resin printers, been watching YT videos off & on during the past 2 years and late last year, bought 2 from Ebay. First one is a used Elegoo Mars P, with the seller tossing in about a dozen bottles of resin. Then after seeing reviews on Elegoo's Saturn printer, bought that, new, simply because of its much larger build plate. Moving stuff around in my livingroom and will eventually be doing all my printing there. I'm single and retired, so got a lot of time on my hands. Got back into modeling, but going for realistic 1/35 zombie/apocalypse dioramas. Thing is, there's a lot of stuff not available as kits, like modern tables, office/home chairs, etc. Got about 6K worth of files of things I want to print and to save time, will be making at least a dozen of everything just so I have a stash of spare parts. There are also things I haven't found files on, another reason to learn cad.

Great job building that model. I heard that the landing gear,so late in the war was a big issue in the production of the air plane. I guess they were made and the steel tempered overseas. US submarines interfered with the amount of tempered tubes reaching Japan.

There where probably both material shortage as you point out and factories being bombed causing the production to grind to a halt.

      Thanks breakaway414 :)
I use piece of 9 gauge electric guitar string and dip the end in a metallic paint (like Gunze Aquesous H-8 or Tamiya X-11). The guitar string is then carefully traced along the panel line or the area where you want a paint chip. Make sure that you dont get too much paint on the string before you start, or you may risk to leave a large blob of paint....
      Hopes this helps you :)
