  • Hi Wonderful people! A simple message today put a little time in to checking your hives as thy come in to spring. they can eat a huge amount of stores in a cold spell and collapse just when you were thinking they were fine!
Done get caught out. If your a new beekeeper, Yes I have lost colonies due to starvation, its not nice, its pretty upsetting. I dont want you to do the same!

    Thanks, Richard,
That's exactly the advice I was looking for down here south of Toulouse. The bees have been going gangbusters but all we have is wild plum and some ornamental crabapple. Your colza is actually way ahead of ours, which has only now just popped a few early blooms. I'm feeding 1to1 and an occasional fondant patty. I'll be watching to see when you put on your first suppers. (By the way, you inspired me to put up a barn owl house. I actually enclosed/covered one of the old windows of the barn, which is the perfect size depth- and height-wize.)
    Best,
    John

found a starved and cold nuc that had gone into a state of torpor, still alive but looked dead. dropped a chunk of hive alive on and immediately bees on the top start licking it. an hour later come back and check to feel the insulated inner cover nice and warm from the bees eating and heating the space back up. the food is the fuel for the heat 🙂

Hi Richard here they start 4 of February with the brooding but we are down south of you. Once the hazel stars and the willow. As you know basically when they bring in pollen.

How I know I also look inside and no problem to the bees if they are flying like you said

    Great advice, Richard. Thank you.
I have 1 colony thats very light. I suspect they've also gone through the fondant I've previously given them. Expecting to have to put more fondant on tomorrow

We are having unusually high consistent temps where I am and haven't had much frost all winter (6 days) when could I feed syrup 2:1? Usually 1:1 in April but with really warm temps should or can I do it earlier? A couple of litres at most.

Good information, Richard Stadium. My question is, when we give the protein feed when there is good pasture outside, does it affect rapid growth and development?🌿🌿 When do we give the feed? Thank you again😇🌿

Have a look at Randy Oliver’studies on pollen sub feeding. In most cases it made little or no difference if there was already a good source of natural pollens coming in. I don’t know your area but got us here, once it starts we have an abundance of pollens. So only feed pollen sub when there is no other pollen around.

If they are light, is feeding them fondant the answer to keep them going until the flow starts?.
Ive lost a colony to starvation 3 weeks back. Ide fed them sugar but i think they got robbed out. Still a bit of sugar still left but no stores whatsoever.

we say until they fly regularly its advisable to feed only very thick sirop or fondant.
