This is the best video I have found concerning roller block id. I have an 87 Iroc-Z that I am slowly restoring in which the original motor had been replace with a jasper 355 engine. Started out replacing a blown hose which turned into a bad water pump, and I never put the new pump on and all the brackets/pulleys because I figured I'm half way to a cam swap. Ended up ordering a pulley kit and a holley stealth ram. Held off on the cam because I wasn't 100 percent if it was hydraulic roller block with a hyd. Roller cam and hyd lifters in it.
Trucks 87-95 are roller blocks but came with flat tappet cams, easy to add roller cam. All cars had the roller cam though.starting in 87’. The blocks are the same 87-95. I’d only rebuild a roller 350. Have a bone stock Vortec 350 with aftermarket intake, quadrajet it runs much better than 70’s smog sbc.
Hi I have a 1995 k1500 350 Tbi . How do I know if I have a flat tapped or roller without taking the engine apart? I read that up to 1995 the 350 came with flat tapped. Some some with roller provisions but were flat tappets.
I have a roller cam block but it has factory flat tappets in it, will be changing it to a roller cam. All i can think is they had excess parts to get rid of
Great job. Nice video. Would be great to see you also go over differences between 400 and 383 block. Like steam holes etc. Did u know if u have a tri 5 block the motor mount pads aren't there. The other issue when converting non roller block to roller is the cam button some cam buttons wont work with some timing covers etc. I only suggest this because u have 2 blocks there to compare.
@@ZanesGarage another one would be how do set tdc. Aka top dead center and how to line up timing Mark's sometimes there is some adjusting. Your welcome hope u can use some of the ideas
i love your video and i have a 5.7 vortec 4bolt main engine that i just bought and it has the that same set up for the lifter valley and cam plate . it has a stock cam and tapit lifters and it didnt have the lifter plat or cam plat . i found out i didnt need it on my set up . .
I recently replaced the roller cam from a vortec 350 with a flat tappet cam on order to comply with a-stock race rules. I had to buy longer push rods and a different timing set. The rest is the same.(or the same enough, motor runs amazing)
What about running an "old style" / "retro style" hyd. roller camshaft in one of these roller blocks? These older style cams don't have the stepped nose like the newer roller blocks do. Does someone make a timing set that allows for this combination? I have an L31 block and a retro style roller cam that I want to use, but the newer style timing set is not compatible.
Yes i have a flat tappet in my roller block that's currently in my Camaro no issues. Just need to have the correct timing set and lifters to go with the cam and your good!
Im puzzled can you help me out, i have a 1995 chevy sbc im thinking its a flat tappet but when i lift the intake off it has the three holes but they’re not drilled they’re just flat but have the three humps but just not drilled, so what does that consider my engine?? Its a 350 tbi
THANK you so much, this whole time I didn't know I had a roller block, does that mean I need a retro fit? Or can I just slap the rollers in the bores with a roller cam?
Great short video. I have a 1970 chevy small block 400 in a Monte Carlo. Came stock and never been touched. I am doing a full resto rod and wanted to run a Howard roller cam and lifters. Really did not want a flat tappet with the negative issues. However, will not race, will not drive radical and only on weekends. I would prefer a semi lopey cam and what would you recommend? Aftermarket heads do not have steam holes drilled. Would you just keep stock heads and redo? Thanks,
I just built a 383 stroker out of a 10243880 ZZ4 Roller Block I can tell you it saved me alot on retro lifters

Thanks, exactly what I needed
Thanks for this. Was trying to find info online and was coming up short and a lot of mixed information.
Glad I could help out!
some machine shops personnel refer to the 'girdle' as a 'spider'.

Would a 350 block from 1989 accept a hydraulic roller setup?
you got a couple of questions below be great if you answered them.....

thank you i really appreciate these infos, because when i search for cam kit to chevy 350 i was wondering why most of them just fit to 1986.

Thank you those are some great video ideas! With Ohio winter in full swing now I'll be looking for videos to shoot in the garage 👍

Do you need to make any modifications if you put flat tappets in a roller block? Like longer push rods or different rocker arms? Anything??

@@nicklester4761 How much longer pushrods did you use

You will need a new cam don't miss match everything and try to make it work with what you have
Great videos
Hi. My block hace not the holes tobthe plate, what can i do?? Some trick? I hace the lifter roller and cam. But no holes
Can you install a flat tappet cam in roller blocks?

Did a roller cam engine also come with factory roller rockers??
U mentioned the block number, so if I look up my block number it should tell me if I have a roller block or not? Without any disassembly
Great vid!

Can one use a flat tappet non roller cam in a roller cam block?
i have a 5.7 98 roller and a 94 5.7 non roller im using the 94 block what can i do to make it run properly

i dont think stock heads in 1970 had steam yet
Thanks
My block has the taps on the top as you showed, and taller valve guides, but I do not have the 2 extra tapped holes. What does that mean?
I just watched a video where a guy had a roller block that didn't have the holes so he had to drill and tap them
can i use a flat tappet cam with roller lifters in my roller block
why would you want to
I have a1995 block that means its a roller?
nice car
So in other words you put a flattapped cam in a roller block
Basically 🤣
Sadly this didn't help me out, i'm not going to tear apart my engine to check :(
