Harnessing Heritage for Profit: How Porsche Conquered the Market

  • Porsche used to be a quirky maker of very good sports cars. They still make exceptional sports cars but now they have monetized your desire for these quirks and you are addicted to carbon fiber, deviated stitching, the GT3 and anything that other Porsche fans tell you that you must be addicted to! If there is a market that can talk themselves into paying stupid amounts of money for stuff that is entirely unimportant and / or useless, it is the Porsche market!
I will explain how Porsche took the quirks they made their name with in the 1960s annd 1970s and made you pay for things that they used to give out for free! Now Porsche fans will seemingly pay literally anything if someone tells them it’s rare or unique. In fact, being rare or unique has become quite common and expensive too!
All filmed from my own Porsche 928, researched and edited by me in either Connecticut or Massachusetts!

Fully agree! After the 993 Porsches soul died. Now all they do is make cars that are either family cars or big heavy sportscars that refer to their epic cars from yesterday.

People forget, Porsche has zero interest in building the best, they are ONLY interested in squeezing every last cent out every customer. That is all that drives every decision at Porsche

Jay, the bottom line is very simple. Porsche marketing department know their customers, thus optional extra charges. The current generation of new Porsche owners can't wait to mention the optional specification of their new car, understandable because they've paid a hefty price for them. These buyer's just don't understand less is more, I'd hazard a guess that the best overall new 911 is the base model. The again, it's probably impossible to order a base model without options.
P.s. All I'd want in anew car is: Cloth upholstery, electric windows, heater mirrors & read screen, A/C, ABS, switchable T/C and a solid color. Job done.

Couldn't agree more. I have that carbon fiber package on my 99/996 probably one of the first ones to get it as you point out and is a hot mess all cracking and not looking very good. Of course, to replaced or fixed the cost is insane! the steering weel also has some cracks as well. As far of the other stuff, I'm perfectly happy with the bare basics (no glove box, cup holders) and not even use the radio since I love the simple sound of the engine right behind me with the top down. Anyways, good videos ! Julio

I have owned my 67 coupe for nearly 20 years, I bought a 996 about 10 years ago which was the same color as my 67 Porsche... but got rid of the 996 as it felt like I was driving a Toyota.. Ill keep my aircooled Porsche till I die!

Whilst I do like the new Porsche 911 range, the more unnecessary toys that owners choose to load their newer cars up with, for me, just increases the desirability of the older, more simpler cars. Absolutely.

You’re right that the 996 was a demarcation point in Porsche history. It was when they went from a legendary maker of costly-but-brilliant sports cars and championship-winning race cars that was a financial basket-case to a legendary maker of costly-but-brilliant sports cars (and nice-enough trucks) and championship winning race cars that is a financial colossus.

I totally agree in terms of the Porsche prize policy nowadays...it's ridiculous...but I like my carbon center console in my 996 C2 anyway....it looks much more better than the ugly standard plastic...even if it doesn't reduce the weight of the car 😎

Honestly I’ve never been a Porsche guy. But as a kid I saw a 993 2S in blue and have always liked the simplicity. I have love for the Carrera GT of course but frankly all others bar those two just make me cringe. And asking all that money for paint and ostentatious ‘options’ dilute the brand in far too many ways. Sold their soul?- not maybe but absolutely and that’s a shame as they had one all of their own until post 993

Haha, I absolutely abhor carbon fibre trim and styling😂 Carbon fibre serves a purpose if you can replace a roof, bonnet or even doors. But going carbon fibre just for the looks is just awful, chav! Worst of all are the aftermarket panels that people tack or glue over the oem trim pieces😂 Excuse my rant…

Carbon fibre as a decorative material has always looked awful.

  • @joepearson3742
    @joepearson3742 4 місяці тому

I hear what you are saying and also hate the over use of carbon fiber. I don't think it looks all that great actually. Kind of cheap even.
That being said, I go to the racetrack with my Cayman R which I've modified with a roll cage and suspension. Many of the fast drivers at the track are driving some sort of Porsche. A GT3 or GT4 is an out of the box track beast. I love that they make these cars and hope they continue to make them even faster. It's a shame there's a lot of rich people out there who will never track them but that's not Porsche's fault. They are certainly not unnecessary or overkill for that application. Sunday drivers who complain the cars are too aggressive are shopping in the wrong category of vehicle in my opinion. I'd argue that Porsche always designed the best car they could at the time. Not purposely making them quirky for the sake of it. There were MANY interesting and quirky cars in previous generations from all sorts of brands. American cars are notorious for this. It was just the style at the time.

Of course Porsche and the dealers know the real profit is in the extras. For example painting the blades on a Macon is (was) $600, what would the markup be? The Porsche crest center cap is now close to $200, again how much markup? Porsche were expensive, but now they are obscene! Why would I want to upgrade my 2015 911 (manual) for a new 911. Having driven a 2023 911, the difference is about $70K from my 2015. Maybe 2023 is faster, I don’t care! Certainly the 2023 is more complex, turbo and all; I do care. The only thing I am missing that would be of interest is a backup camera. Let’s see $70K for a backup camera; I don’t think so. When I upgraded from my 1999 C4 to the 2015, there were many upgraded features. The 996 had a spartan interior with flimsy plastic and, of course the feared IMS. As much as I enjoy the 2015, I miss the 1999, it had more character, and one could say; more like a traditional feel. The newer Porsches have no soul, or should I say quarks!

  • @jeffhammond8969

Pretty much all of their cars are ridiculously overpriced. It’s why I’ll never own a new one. They have lost touch with what made them great in the first place. They used to be a car that was expensive, but still attainable. Not so anymore. If you don’t already own x cars, you can’t even get on a list to purchase limited edition cars.

I think it's the whole Porsche culture that has gotten spoiled and way too elitist. The way Porsche manages their allocations, they pricing and cost of every little option, the watches to match your GT3. It's gotten way too greedy.
I think I'll stick with my pathetic little 987.2 base Boxster. It's still somehwat in the spirit of what Porsche was all about, light, manual, flat six and basic tech.

not sure at all about this “new generation” of carbon fibre loving owners who brag about options. Maybe i mix in different circles but the enthusiasts i talk to appreciate all generations, i can’t remember once having a conversation about CF in the cabin. Bit of a rant for clicks and date i say slightly out of character

@@JAYREAD followed the bringing back to life of your green boxster so get that you appreciate all models. i think though that you’re making a meal out of the options point.
