Owned a 2004 S500 LWB 4matic for about 2 years. Very reliable vehicle with no rust when I bought it with 120,000km on the clock, all I did was oil changes, pads and tires. Wafts around in complete comfort and with 4matic, perfectly capable during harsh Canadian winters.
I still own mine, S430 4Matic. Paid $5k (CDN) for it in 2017 and because of inflation, it's probably gone up in value. I use it as a road trip car a few times a year and drive it all winter because of the 4Matic, and I have winter tires for it so it goes anywhere. It's cost me virtually nothing to own. I do my own oil changes and I had to replace a smog pump, which I bought used for under $100. The quietness and ride comfort are sublime. First Mercedes I've owned after being a loyal BMW owner for decades. I don't see myself going back.
@@JoseR88 nothing that left me on the side of the road, but yes there was the odd breakage. Gear lever stopped selecting reverse, but only needed a small part. Regular servicing by a specialist ex Merc garage was key.
@@JoseR88 mine was a 52 with standard Air susp. I never had an issue with the suspension and it is magnificently smooth, but I do know that earlier in its life it had had two replacement central suspension control units under warranty. I think the issues had largely gone by 05. Car is still on the road being serviced by the same garage (I sold it through him to one of his contacts) It literally still looked like new inside and out when I got rid of it.
W140 was made to a quality, unlike the W220 which was made to a price! I previously owned the former and I have owned the latter S 320 CDI, for 13 years. I also own a W221 S63 AMG and I still think the W140 was a better built car than both the W220 and W221.
you should try one someday, one thing that I can say is that the very moment you get into it, when you close the door or open it, you will feel the door much solid & slightly heavier than the w220😅
While I would never buy one of these old potential money-pits, I do love your videos about them. I love that there are enthusiasts who keep them on the road. Just today I saw an old Vauxhall Omega in pretty good nick, and it made me smile just to see it wafting down the road.
I parked next to a tidy 03 plate 2.6 Omega the other day, first I've seen in a while. I had three in succession back in the 00s and they were excellent cheap motorway mile munchers. Saw a 1998 one at a garage in Fleet a few months back and they wanted 1800 quid for it eeekk.
They are reliable, but you need a good (non Merc) garage who knew how to service them. The MB dealer will always sell you new parts, but in the most cases a simple cleaning and contact spray solve the problems.
Matt, I am a retired old guy that drives a 2007 Mercedes CLS550.Rather fancy an S -Class as next motor if I live that long. By the way, another excellent video. Always look forward to them.
A very accurate review of the W220, I own a 2004 S280 with only 43000kms on it. First of it has 3 concealed cup holders, 2 at the back on the front part of the centre arm rest that you press in and they come out and one at the front just in front of the center armrest behind the gear lever that you also press in for it to be revealed. That crankshaft sensor I’ve had to change, invaluable consumer advice on that. My boot also has the refrigerator unit taking up more space but I manage to survive with it.
I rarely if ever make a comment on videos, but I have to compliment the effort you put in to make the reviews. I really love how you present each and every car and you also pick cars others do not. Superb! Keep it up!
Really enjoying your channel. I bought a 1999 W220 S500 L in black with cream interior a couple of years ago, just before the pandemic. Amazingly it only cost £1000 with 93k on the clock. Great spec including soft close doors, heated and ventilated seats, linguatronic, old school Nokia phone in the armrest and keyless go although unfortunately no key card. Amazingly I’ve had almost no issues. I did spend a fair amount immediately after purchase just to make it good - B service and new brake pads and discs plus a full stereo upgrade which cost more than the car but that was a want rather than a need. I also changed the sparkplugs which was expensive. I think it’s an amazing car and so much metal for the money. I also have a beautiful low millage W124 E320 Coupe. As much as I love it, the W220 is in a different league.
I have an '06 S430 4Matic with 105,000 miles on them. It has been a great car! One of the air strut did go out so I had to get a replacement from Suncore Industries for $180 and it works great. As someone with an engineering background, I did change out the strut myself, as well as some other little things on the car. To be honest, there are many things in this S-class generation that you can service yourself. If you are down to get your hands dirty once every 1-2 years, this car is a steal, considering it rides better than most modern cars out there, especially for the price. When you are looking to get one of these, make sure to check on the air suspension, which can oftentimes break. Other than that, I would say it's very reliable.
Cup holders are in the centre console, but you have to open the left hand split first or they disappear into the main cover. The Siemens fibre optic Command system is an unreliable 'pain' to live with. Still the best car money can buy.
I had a 2001 S500 swb, still to this day the best car I have owned or Driven. Because it was pre 2003 the tin worm was relentless so make sure you buy a post 2003, the rust proofing was much better.
My 2003 has rust on one rear quarter fender wheel arch. It's the only spot with rust so I'm not sure why. Maybe it was damaged and repaired improperly before I bought it.
Not true, Mercedes up until 2000 had elegant cars. After that they only made cars based on costs. I would rather have the newest S class than the W220!
Late 2003 onwards don't rust. Different sheet metal and different paint used. I live 2 miles from the sea here in the UK. The salt water gets in the air and cars rust so quickly and easily here. Very harsh road salting too throughout the winter. My 2004 has no rust on it and I haven't been that diligent in cleaning.
Owner of a 2004 LS here. I love these S-Class, super timeless and very subtle design. First thing that hit me on these cars is the scent, classic German luxury scent. When my confidence is up, one day I desire to own one of these cars. A buddy of mine has the W221 chasis with the 4.7L V8 engine. Personally I prefer the styling and interior of that car, but both cars suffer the same fate with the headlight design. I don't know, they just never really ticked with me. Other than that, brilliant cars that are the epitome of luxury in the automotive world.
I had a 2004 4 matic S500 purchased used at 30,000 miles and used it till 185,000 miles. One air shock and pump but otherwise not a problem. Traded it for a 2005 S500 4matic with 25,000 miles that I still have. In the USA the cup holder is in front of the arm rear, it deploys from the wood panel, not a great design. Yours doesn’t have it because it most likely broke and the previous owner did not want to spend the $150 to replace it, it just snaps in. These are wonderful highway cars, I just used it to pick up a new puppy from the breeder. 5 hour trip each way, 10 hours in the car and I felt completely fine afterwards. Powerful, quiet, supremely comfortable. I do most of my own maintenance so cost is not an issue.
Great car. had an S320 for three years and it never let me down. Despite what you say, I'm pretty sure that mine had two cupholders under the right side of the split armrest. i've upgraded on to a CL500 now, but I'd happily have another W220.
There is one hidden cup holder if front of the armrest and another detachable one on the passenger side console. They're both kinda janky at best and not really in the same league as an S-Class.
@@edwardmurray8507 W221 was a step back technically.Serious problems with early petrol engines and unreliable 7-gearbox.Otherwise I´m sure it´s even more comfortable to ride.
Great review man, i always love when you drive a Mercedes. And thank you for the translate of the fuel numbers to Liters. It help a guy like me from Sweden :D
What a Fantastic and honest review. I have got a 99' 320 petrol V6. Everytime a friend or relative rides in it, they can't believe how quiet and confortable it is. I've always wondered how the W220 compares to a VW Phaeton from the same era. People say that the Phaeton feels like another level in terms of comfort, quietness and overall quality.
@@UpsideDownFork It's a interesting comparison. I've riden in 3 Phaetons 3.0 V6 TDI they all felt very heavy, cumbersome and, surprisingly unrefined. The V6 TDI felt too underpowered and rough at iddle for a car of that caliber however, most Phaeton reviews praise the car for its comfort...
My dad bought one in 2000, now I own it. I drive it every day. It's an old man's car and I'm 32 years old and although I have a 2021 Mercedes I prefer the old man. It has 100,000 miles. And it only had two owners.
W140 is the last big Merc of the over engineering/ no rust era. Imo potential highly sought classic status. This model is not a bad Mercedes, but only really for the retired. But will never equal the star quality of ‘The Cathedral! 😃
Exactly, the w140 is the last big merc/ overengineering & the w220 even though it can't beat the w140 but it is still nice to drive & much nimble..the airmatic is the thing that I like the most when driving that car.👍 Anyway, feel free to watch my short drive video of my Mercedes w140 on my channel. Thanks in advance🙏
Ive had W140 5.0L V8 4 door and coupe and W220 5.0L V8 4 door and coupe this is my ranking W140 4 Door - utterly astounding car - will never be beaten in my view - by far the best car of the 50+ cars I have owned W140 Coupe - good but not close to the 4 door W220 coupe - Not bad, but lots of electronic crap that stops working remarkably quickly W220 4 door - Not good, same problem as the coup with electronics but does not have the extra $$$ spent on build quality In summary - I believe the W140 to be the finest engineered car ever made. Try changing a ball joint on one - you cant, you have to change the wishbone cos its pressed directly into it to remove the flex at the joint. The same applies to every component of the car - just sublime quality.
The W220 started the trend of dazzling the customers with tech to distract them from the fact that build quality has taken a massive hit. "Tech! Tech! LOOK everybody, tech!" "Hmm, these buttons feel cheap" "Never mind all that bollocks, TECH!!".
I had this same S350 for 2 years before selling it off. It is not as bad as the nay-sayers say it is. It is in fact quite reliable and not as expensive to maintain as most people think. Having owned one, I only feared the air suspension failing and it did. Set me back quite a bit of money and once replaced it will be good for another 5 to 10 years. Someone used to say to me, why buy a Hyundai/Kia, when you can have a pristine S Class for the same amount of money? Hyundai/Kia doesn’t drives like an S class nor will those cars give you similar level of safety features. I used to drive 200 to 300km a day and my god this has got to be one of the best cars for long commutes. Feels effortless!
The best car in the world for the price, just watch out for rust on earlier pre 2003 galvanised models and suspension issues. Low miles (under 100k) S320 SWB the one to go for in black, blue or dark grey.
I own a w220 S320 petrol. It is equipped with a Prins LPG installation. It is by far the most comfortable and reliable car I have ever driven. I do all the reparations myself and use OEM pieces. Did 130k km in 3 years without a hick-up! The only big expense I had was the treatment of the rusty edges 2 years ago.
Loving the High Peak Autos 'luxo barge' reviews, always cool to learn more (c)artefacts! Great fun video as always and much appreciated for sure, thank you Sir👍
Yea, you had me until the opinion of the styling of the W140. The 140's styling was of a time, much like the dash of the W220 which you dislike. For those eras, both were fresh. I guess we all seek something that is timeless, well-engineered/reliable and a value. I ended up with an '04 LS430 and couldn't be happier. Fun review!
Love cars like this........there's so many bargains to be had with vehicles like this. Yes it's a risk as they could bankrupt you, but pick wisely and you'll be smiling
Hello Matt, that's the best video you've ever made!! I have that exact model for almost 4 yrs now. Its exactly as you , I love it. I bought mine with no history but it felt good to drive. I haven't had any serious problems, in fact very few. I did a little work on the suspension which cost 500 euros. But I don't regret buying it one bit! I paid 1800 euros in 2017,the best 1800 I ever spent. Keep up the real world videos.
Amazing.I bought mine in 2017 and also spent 500e to get the airmatic working. My car was way much expensive, though. No issues whatsoever,it really is the best you can get with little money,if you buy a well kept car and do a little homework. Not a moneypit if you are clever.
This is my daily, for 3y now. Best decision in my life! Warning; he's not exaggerating about the ride, every other car you'll drive WILL feel a lot less comfortable. The first couple of weeks when I had it I had to convince ppl on the phone I really was in my car driving over 200 km/h, so effortless and quite.
I'd have the W140 everytime over one of these personally. The 140 will be cult cool soon but this shape is so dull I can't see it ever being desirable for the running costs.
@@mudplugging my bad. Beautiful colour though 😍 my dad, 2 of my uncles and my grandad each had a w220 s class back When I was a little kid. A s320 2002, 2x s320 2003 and a 2004 s600 model. Hello there 🙂👋, Rob here from Essex. Ive always liked Mercs and ive owned 2 in the past. Both E classes. First E class was the model from 1990 which I bought in 2001 then the second was a 1999-2000 shape which I bought in 2007. The later model was so smooth to drive and floated along, I lvd it. I was gonna get the slightly newer shape next which I think if im correct came out in 2001-2, but I went 4 a 2003 Audi TT 225, OMG gr8 car 2 drive and the power when pulling away from lights or accelerating on2 the dual carriageway/motorway 😀. Your vids mate r always cool and well presented.
I was a chauffeur, had the S430 LWB V8 version and it was easily the best car Ive ever owned. So refined, beautiful & quiet and outside of normal servicing didnt cost a penny! I now drive a ML55
The W140 was one the best Merc's ever made " over Engineered " & beautiful !, W220 was Mercs worst time 1999- 2005 rusty & cheap materials " same steering wheel as the Merc Sprinter van? , great channel Matt more older luxury motors !
I’ve owned a w220 s600 for 2 years now, and I’ve been lucky enough to have had no real bad experiences so far. Only necessary repairs were a cracked coolant reservoir, brakes, battery, and a starter. Any other repair has just been preventative maintenance or because I hope to keep it for much much longer. A lot of the electrical problems I’ve been able to solve by checking fuses or various reset procedures (so far). Getting ready to do the conductor plate and some upgrades to the valve body while I’m in there. The interior is not as nice as either the w140 or w221, but I couldn’t complain for the price I got it at, still nicer than most of my other friends’ cars!
Great vid, i have a 2002 SClass 500 bought it in 2015 and been a fantastic car, full history 103000 miles and just replaced parts due to wear and tear, no probs with air suspension and i use it most days, went to Poland two years ago in it and what an amazing experience driving this awesome car driving through Holland, Germany into Poland where i have family, and good milage too, 2500 miles complete journey all in and £500 in fuel so pretty good, il never get rid of of it as what can i get to replace it with? Keep up the great vids 😁
@@HighPeakAutos not long after i got it i had a full stainless steel exhaust fitted actually cheaper than standard Merc one and a lifetime warranty too! Avon tyres all round, amazing grip esp in tight corners and when you stiffen up air suspension car hunkers down and shows how nimble a bloody big car can be! Ha!
The cupholder is notoriously flimsy. Yours is apparently missing, comes out of the smaller compartment if the armrest. Clean the soft touch surfaces with alcohol cleaner, you don't need those anyways. It will get rid of the sticky
My hairdresser bought one, a 2007, I believe, with less than 100K miles on it. Every time I see her, which is about once every 6 weeks, the car is in the shop.
There are two cupholders at the end of the rear armrest and one folding cupholder at the center console. You can also put a bottle or another cup where the folding cupholder pops out. I bought a nice example 2005 S 500 L a few years ago and I've been very happy with it. Low maintenance costs, great noise, no problem driving all day long and the champagne fridge is a superb party trick. Also the 2004-2005 S 500 get the 7G-Tronic in rear wheel drive models so you get the same fuel economy as the S 350 but a LOT more power and torque - and better exhaust tone. Also there are no two batteries. The W221 does have two batteries. The Airmatic is really not that expensive to repair. Parts are relatively cheap and you don't need to repair the whole system at once.
I'm picking up my seventh merc tomorrow.. FULL SERVICE BY A MERC SPECIALIST ALL THE WAY .. none of mine have ever failed majorly due to that and I must have covered over half a million miles in mine
Once again I enjoyed this video. I had a W126 300 S.E. for many years (more than 20+ years ago), it was absolutely brilliant. Apart from a thermostat playing up at one point I didn’t have a minutes problem with it. I loved it so much, I kept it and still used it after I bought its replacement (Range Rover) I wish I still had it. My mate who had a bad heart persuaded me to sell it to him on the premise that he had a bad heart and always wanted it, he used it for a year and parked it in his garden after that where it could possibly still be, I’ve lost touch with him now but the last time I saw him the Merc hadn’t moved for over 15 years!
I love me 2002 s430! No NY winters. 82k on it. The only thing I've replaced in the last 5 year's is the air ride compressor 800 bucks installed and the battery 269 bucks! Great milage on Hwy aprox 32mpg. Best car I've owned
Thanks any chance of doing a review on a ford/Granada Scorpio my father-in-law used to have one I wish I had bought it it was a 2.9i in White stunning looking car thanks
I spotted your wallet sitting in the opening where the cupholder used to be. It's a $60 pop-up, fold out, assembly that snaps into that compartment under the pivoting wood cover. Two cupholders slide out from the rear seat armrest and are a little more secure.
I had a S320 cdi for around 3 years. As you rightly say keep a couple of grand to one side. Great car to drive over in Europe but avoid french multistory car parks, having to take two goes at a corner really gets old Frenchie wound up.
My dad recently purchased an immaculate 2010 E300 with a FULL history from it's first and only owner (who sadly passed on as result of Covid). The price and condition is unheard of. I can only imagine how nice this S-class must be.
Hi colm here, I bought mine in mayo 4 yrs ago, yeah I know about the tax!!! But it's worth it, my philosophy is you can buy an average car for upwards of 15000 euro and it will take you from a to b for sure ,I bought mine for 1800 euros and I tax it every 3 months, its worth every cent, I like you went over it in my mind for a few years. Soon these cars will all be taken off the road and you'll be sorry you never did.
There's a used car dealer that uses one of these S class mercs as rolling gate barrier to his car lot. It looks totally knackered, the suspension is on it's arse and there's rust everywhere. It's incredible how such an expensive car can end up a total bin job !!!
I saw one of this recently, but it was imported with very low mileage ( not to be trusted ). What really put me off them was, Jeremy Clarkson, saying "turn up in a mercedes, people will think the chauffeur has arrived, turn up in a BMW or a Range Rover, people will think here comes the drug dealer." I think I'll just stick with SL 55. NOW, where is that lottery ticket? Good review by the way👍💯, DW40 not be confused with UB40 I suppose😂😂😂.
Our car exactly -agreed with all the comments . My husband’s 10 th Mercedes and he thinks it’s his most beautiful one ever! We use ours only for long trips and it’s everything the man said 👌🏻
I had two over the years both facelift one S320 cdi the other S500 (55 reg and 04 respectively) , fab cars when there wasn't a issue.- insanely complex electrics as said. I do have moments where I go on autotrader and think about buying another... maybe I'm a glutton for punishment! Nice review thanks. 👌
I sold my dad's 2015 S63 coupe a couple of months ago having only done 40K miles. He's switching to electric for his daily commute. It was the most opulent and beautifully put together cars I've ever been lucky to sit in. Everyday I keep thinking that I should've kept it, but I don't do a lot of miles myself so it had to go.
Hi Matt I’ve had a s500L and a s600sel W140 the older version of the one your testing and I really fell in Love with them especially the s600 it had so many toys on it like an electric adjustable rear view mirror electric rear blind little rods the popped up from the back of the car when you put the car in reverse soft close doors, double glazing the list was almost endless I wish I’d of kept it now as there are not that many on the roads now great video as always hope you are well best wishes ian.
I drive a S500L from 2003 and I will never understand, why everybody complains about the window switches 😂 they are so easy to reach! I never thought, that they are too far away
€1400~€1800 annual road tax in Ireland depending on the engine choice. Can buy cheap enough but will get robbed over and over again on tax and repairs.
I used to be a coach driver and mini bus. The steering wheel in this car was also in the mini buses. Lovely car but knowing this it makes it look cheap me for. But hey thats just my opinion. Hope your well matt.
I came incredibly close to buying one of those, in black with a black leather interior, diesel. Have had every model of C-Class, even the 190E and the S-Class was always the dream. I bought an XJ instead
Yet again another well put together video. Though I’m not looking for a Lux Barge I was still more than happy to watch the entire thing. Keep up the great work !
Definitely use a Mercedes specialist and try to buy one with the most complete service history you can find with Mercedes dealers or specialists - excellent advice. This can be cheap, fantastic motoring. The W140 is better made, but wider and more ungainly. Lots of great advice on this video. Style wise, these cars are colour sensitive - silver looks best.
Had myself 99 s500l for almost 2 years. It had shitload of miles, so it was "money pit" to some extent as things were breaking down her and there. Few takaways: air ride is heaven, best ride quality I've experienced but fun ends when airmatic system breaks down. Other things I really loved : light steering wheel, spacious interior, very comfortable seats in back, good power. What I didn't like: front seats (FL) were not comfortable , some interior part felt cheap and also electrical and mechanical issues due to age and big mileage. But when it's working, it is amazing to ride in one.
Sir your extempore sounded like a E.X.C.E.L.L.E.N.T sales pitch for a Mercedes S Class, made the car look even more classy. Thank you sir, really enjoyed the luxurious ride."🙏" 🤝👏👏
That car should have cup holders in the front just in front of the centre armrest. The rear armrest should also have cup holders that pop out from the bottom as well I think.

There ARE cup holders. Located in the arm rests (both front and rear seats).
Oooops, our car specialist is slipping 😂🤣
Superb! Keep it up!
The s55 from this generation looks amazing. And those quad exhausts are fantastic
Couldn't agree more!
Looks? Eh. But I don’t care about looks when I step on the long pedal in my supercharged S55!
yes i love it
Really enjoying your channel.
Thanks for another fine vid!
And special thanks for l/km conversions for us continental types, it is a very nice touch.
Thanks for watching!
From when Mercedes were elegant…. and not rather tacky…👍
Exactly!
True!
The new S classes are elegant?
Not true, Mercedes up until 2000 had elegant cars. After that they only made cars based on costs. I would rather have the newest S class than the W220!
That S class looks so good, it's just understated luxury. Unfortunately it isn't really suited for the winters in Germany, it rusts like crazy.
The early ones were really bad
That’s impressive
Great car. had an S320 for three years and it never let me down.
Rotboxes. As I diehard Benz enthusiast (on my 11th), there are few specialists I'd trust, and I'd take a W221 over a w220.
2005 here... Approx 115k on clock.
No rot 👍🏿
@@edwardmurray8507 W221 was a step back technically.Serious problems with early petrol engines and unreliable 7-gearbox.Otherwise I´m sure it´s even more comfortable to ride.
@@matsujarvinen actually it's not, seats of the W221 are way smaller and sporty (not comfortable like W220)
Only Phaeton owners say that. They are equal in most respects. If you compare them back to back you will find the W220 is just a touch softer.
Nice!
Really appreciating the metric conversions😍
W140 is the last big Merc of the over engineering/ no rust era. Imo potential highly sought classic status.
This model is not a bad Mercedes, but only really for the retired.
But will never equal the star quality of ‘The Cathedral!
😃
Exactly, the w140 is the last big merc/ overengineering & the w220 even though it can't beat the w140 but it is still nice to drive & much nimble..the airmatic is the thing that I like the most when driving that car.👍
Anyway, feel free to watch my short drive video of my Mercedes w140 on my channel. Thanks in advance🙏
Ive had W140 5.0L V8 4 door and coupe and W220 5.0L V8 4 door and coupe this is my ranking
W140 4 Door - utterly astounding car - will never be beaten in my view - by far the best car of the 50+ cars I have owned
W140 Coupe - good but not close to the 4 door
W220 coupe - Not bad, but lots of electronic crap that stops working remarkably quickly
W220 4 door - Not good, same problem as the coup with electronics but does not have the extra $$$ spent on build quality
In summary - I believe the W140 to be the finest engineered car ever made. Try changing a ball joint on one - you cant, you have to change the wishbone cos its pressed directly into it to remove the flex at the joint. The same applies to every component of the car - just sublime quality.
ehh no car is rust proof..its all about the weather and climate
The W220 started the trend of dazzling the customers with tech to distract them from the fact that build quality has taken a massive hit. "Tech! Tech! LOOK everybody, tech!" "Hmm, these buttons feel cheap" "Never mind all that bollocks, TECH!!".
@@piccalillipit9211 Not the first the second. They copied someone else
Fun review!
I’d like you to do a review on a seriously uncool Ford B-Max.
Love cars like this........there's so many bargains to be had with vehicles like this. Yes it's a risk as they could bankrupt you, but pick wisely and you'll be smiling
I agree
Hello Matt, that's the best video you've ever made!! I have that exact model for almost 4 yrs now. Its exactly as you , I love it. I bought mine with no history but it felt good to drive. I haven't had any serious problems, in fact very few. I did a little work on the suspension which cost 500 euros. But I don't regret buying it one bit! I paid 1800 euros in 2017,the best 1800 I ever spent. Keep up the real world videos.
Thats good to hear! Sounds like you got a good one

Got the same car!
2004 W220 S350 in black!
I'd have the W140 everytime over one of these personally. The 140 will be cult cool soon but this shape is so dull I can't see it ever being desirable for the running costs.
This remains my favourite S-Class, you sometimes have to look twice just to make sure it's not something lower down the range. Perfectly discreet.
Thats right
W220 s class is my favourite too. The new shape has lost the elegance and sophistication that a true S Class should have
This diamond silver with the beige leather is the best spec too!
@@santana9537 I believe that colour is Chalcedon Blue, my favourite.
@@mudplugging my bad. Beautiful colour though 😍 my dad, 2 of my uncles and my grandad each had a w220 s class back When I was a little kid. A s320 2002, 2x s320 2003 and a 2004 s600 model. All in this same shade of blue, beige leather. This video got me emotional as this was the car that made me a ‘car guy’ from the age of 2. Unfortunately the new shape s class and when the facelift w222 s class have lost the charm that i fell in love with 😂😭
My father bought a dirt cheap mercedes recently and im surprised how quite it runs and on idle. The quality is superb.
A bit cheap materials and not as solid feeling as the old ones. But the facelift didnt have much problems with rust at least.
If you could get an M113k engine in a w140, I would agree.
Thanks Matt from your Beverly Hills Orthodontist..😁
Great video review..
Haha Thanks for watching!
In my country, the used W220 S-class is cheaper than the used w211 E-class. People usually hate repairing the air suspension in the S-class.
Even worse when you have ABC
Great video as always, but I prefer the next generation S Class, there is something about the rear quarters that is so elegant.
I have a 2004 S32O CDi right now sitting outside my flat right now which is a pleasure to own and drive.
15 seconds into the video and I can already tell this car is loaded. I always count the buttons on the center of the dash of these, I can't help it :D
Haha true

@@HighPeakAutos Respect is what makes this channel even more amazing 👏.
Delighted to hear the word “malleable”in use.
Haha good
I’ve owned a w220 s600 for 2 years now, and I’ve been lucky enough to have had no real bad experiences so far.
Even as a kid I loved the auld man Chalcedonay Blue on beige combo.
Thats impressive. You're quite right. What on earth could you replace it with? I think this is why most people keep them
@@HighPeakAutos not long after i got it i had a full stainless steel exhaust fitted actually cheaper than standard Merc one and a lifetime warranty too!
I would look at a top spec LEXUS from the same time period or a Nissan Infiniti and see how they compare in price / ride / running costs.
I've got a W140 CL500 1998 here round the corner, if you ever wanted to test drive & review
I spotted your wallet sitting in the opening where the cupholder used to be. It's a $60 pop-up, fold out, assembly that snaps into that compartment under the pivoting wood cover.
Two cupholders slide out from the rear seat armrest and are a little more secure.
They go proper rusty. Check it really carefully
I had a S320 cdi for around 3 years. As you rightly say keep a couple of grand to one side. Great car to drive over in Europe but avoid
french multistory car parks, having to take two goes at a corner really gets old Frenchie wound up.
Haha yes I bet. I remember struggling with a C Class in a Parisian multi-storey
Avoid ALL multistorey carparks wherever they may be..

Your big lexus is superior in every way.
It's the ludicrous tax here in Ireland that stops me getting one of those old beauties! 😔
Its a shame
On the contrary, the high tax here in Ireland makes the car super cheap. I bought a 2008 w221 320cdi with 225000km for 4100 euro. Beat that.
Crazy here, the 3.2 diesel is €1,809 per year. Absolute ripoff!
Road tax here in Ireland scandalous
Hi colm here, I bought mine in mayo 4 yrs ago, yeah I know about the tax!!! But it's worth it, my philosophy is you can buy an average car for upwards of 15000 euro and it will take you from a to b for sure ,I bought mine for 1800 euros and I tax it every 3 months, its worth every cent, I like you went over it in my mind for a few years. Soon these cars will all be taken off the road and you'll be sorry you never did.
Beautiful review.Filled with a few laugher and no swearing,um,etc. Was entertained all the way. Great review indeed👍
Thank you. I appreciate the feedback

I clicked on this video just for the humor and jokes in the review, i was not disappointed. 😂
