  • This video, from an Experimental Structures course at Iowa State University, looks at the evolving uses of physical models in experimental architectural shell and membrane structures. The video shows how models transcended simply representational roles; physical models were used in form-finding and analysis methods for double-curved concrete structural shells (Heinz Isler) and lightweight cable and membrane structures (Frei Otto). These models became generative and confirmative models with very useful benefits. -Rob Whitehead, AIA, LEED AP, Associate Professor of Architecture, Iowa State University
