    State of Origin is why i fell in love with Rugby League - this coming from a Scotsman where Rugby League is by no means the most popular sport - King Wally, Sterlo, Kenny, Mortimer, Meninga, ET, Jack the names go on and on - Fearnley shafted QLD (and Wally) there is no doubt about that

    As a European i am ashamed that soccer is the most famous and most well payed sport in the world. Bunch of fancy fairytales pretending to be hurt for 1 hour and a half, just for the bribed team to give up the game, and hen everyone goes back to their supermodel boyfriends, Lamborghinis and multi million mansions.
    My heart started pumping harder just watching this short clip of QL vs NSW. I can only imagine what BEING there feels like.

    I can't help but think if Lewis played for NSW he would have captained Australia more often and given far more respect in the media and general public. For sure the sentiment regards NSW north of the border can be hostile but I don't think individual players are as vilified as Lewis is in Sydney. I was lucky enough to see Sate of Origin games in the early 80's at both Lang Park and the Sydney Cricket Ground. It can't be over empathised how much influence he had on games. When I see things like Andrew Johns becoming a Immortal it makes the game seem like a joke. NSW just can't seem to handle the idea that Qld produces good footballers

    3:36 - the 1984 midweek competition. That was a keenly contested final. I remember Wally Lewis donning the Eastern Suburbs jersey for the post-match presentation, not because that was necessarily the done thing but because if there was ever such a thing as worthy opposition then that had to have been it.

    • @DanmarskyAus
      @DanmarskyAus  4 роки тому +1

      The Mid week comp was a beauty. I remember watching that 84 Final as a young fella on TV. Back in the day, it was a tradition to swap jerseys after big games. Good old respect and sportsmanship was a feature of sports in general back in the day....they played tough while the game was on, but after the final whistle the majority of players showed respect and good human values towards one another

    • @jonglewongle3438
      @jonglewongle3438 4 роки тому +2

      @@DanmarskyAus Donning the opposition jersey was previously the suggested thing and adopted in a non-uniformly manner, and which had since become more nominal and elective. And there came to be the thing of individual jersey trades post-match, subsequently. But Wally Lewis and several other of that Combined Brisbane side that night definately meant it.

    5:13 - " ....the local Brisbane comp....". That is the emblems for all the sides. That competition is since defunct. They closed that competition down. Living in the UK in 1985 and part of 86,I thought NSW deserved to win game 1 but I thought were very lucky to win game 2 and the series in 1985 that really should of gone to QLD,I won't Denie that NSW did deserve the 86 white wash but not 1985 that should of gone to QLD. In away iam glad I was in living in the UK when QLD weren't at the their best in Origin but I was sure glad to be back in Oz in 87 to watch the 8 game winning streak by QLD. But still another great Doco made and Terry Fernaley cause more hated then need it's never good having the state and national job at the same time, Frank Stanton and Terry Fernaley Proved that and with bad results on the national team as proven on in 1986 against NZ and Bob Fulton in 1990 on the Kangaroo tour.

    Cool nostalgia, but a revision of some history and biased pro-queensland view. Most QLD club and rep sides who played mid week cup in Sydney got regular hammered by Sydney teams, and many were reserve strength. The combined Brisbane v Balmain game, for example.

    Yes, as a child in the stands watching QLD V QLD (NSW), the majority of NSW were Qlders, and QLD copping a flogging from NSW (QLD). Back pre State of origin, if you played in Sydney you HAD to play for NSW . NSW were professional players payed by your clubs pokie revenue, QLD were amateurs playing for the love of the game. NSW poached EVERY class player from QLD to play for their 'best in the world NSW clubs, luring them with big money. Now back then you could only play for Australia by your performance in that NSW v QLD game. So if you you wanted to advance to the ultimate goal of playing in the Green & Gold you moved to NSW and played for one of their clubs, and it was almost certain, if you were a poached Queenslander, you wold be picked for NSW And then Australia. No we don't hate NSW, that's just spin doctoring at its worst level, we Qlders just let you think you are the epicentre of rugby league on the planet. If you haven't worked it out yet. well?

      we keep hearing this story that nsw was full of qld players but for us not old enough of that era, honest question.... has anyone ever provided the real numbers to back this line up or is it just more qld bullshit? id really like to know the real stats because i find it very hard to believe there would be more than a couple qld guys making those nsw teams in the 70s.

    As I watch more recent video's of red card violation video's from modern-day games of rugby union, I see this video and long for the return of rugby like this. Tackles up around the shoulder/neck area : No problem. Dust up between players? 5 minutes in the sin bin. This is how rugby was, and should be. Don't give me any arguments about "safety"; that's just politically correct nonsense, effeminizing and demasculinizg the game. It wasn't a problem back then, and it never needed to be changed. The danger of scrum engagement was dealt with without diminishing the overall game. Let Rugby be Rugby.
