'Modi Has Created a New Pro-Hindu Power Elite-Protecting India's Social Unity Not Important to Them'

- Опубліковано 8 кві 2021
- In the first interview to mark the weekend launch of his book ‘India’s Power Elite: class, caste and a cultural revolution’ SANJAYA BARU says in the seven years he’s been in power Narendra Modi has created a new power elite and created a cultural revolution in terms of the people who rule India as well as in terms of their ideas and thinking. Previously when governments changed in New Delhi there were no major changes in the social class that constituted the capitals power elite. As BARU puts it, “ it was a revolving door...one set of friends went in and another set went out”. Now “ the new intellectuals around an Amit Shah and Yogi Adityanath belong to a different world”.
In a 32 minute interview with Karan Thapar for The Wire, BARU says the new power elite is more provincial, it prefers to use Hindi or vernacular languages, it’s drawn from the middle or intermediate and not upper castes or classes and it was not born into families of privilege with easily accessible contacts. In contrast, the old elite had been to similar schools and universities, were members of the Gymkhana or IIC and were largely upper-middle class.

I have so enjoyed reading the comments, chuckled several times, laughed aloud some, and am so happy that we Indians are awake and alert.
Notice the comment by Baru, ‘I was growing up in Hyderabad & never heard reference to Religion’...while the reality of our cities, towns n villages has deep religious fault lines. Many major riots took place in his youth & while we are at it, 3% Hindu minority of Kashmir was ethnically cleansed in one shot. But hey, in the English speaking circles, the Hindu n Muslim elites pretend that the ‘street’ where there is one sided dominance doesn’t exist!

The meltdown of "Metropolitan institutions" like St. Stephen's College in Bureaucracy is started when Engineers started to compete in Civil Services Examination. Earlier, nearly 70% of the bureaucrats came from one college- St. Stephen's College. But in last couple of decades, mostly engineers that too from IITs are making their space in civil services and thereby sooner or later in the PMO. Moreover, bureaucrats in 80's and 90's - which Baru was referring- have had the background in Arts/Commerce/Humanities. But nowadays, they come in the variety of Engineers, Doctors, Physicists. For Arts (supra), St. Stephen's College is an epitome of eliteness, but for technical background IITs/IISc holds the same glass.
Today most of the bright students choose engineering or medicine.
50 years back it was not the case.
@@flyingafrinak6958 50 years ago either the best students opt for Science/Engineering/Medicine. But those who chose for said courses, they wouldn't appear in CSE. Nowadays, Engineers and Doctors are appearing in this examination so much so that they didn't do in 50 years ago.

This is precisely the problem - All the inner circle , the power elite, came from St. Stephen's - I am just shaking my head - AND??? Does that mean that they were intelligent and capable ??? Certainly not! This tendency of Indians to confuse intelligence with fluency in English language is what the problem is!!! The new aspirational class want better clothes like Thappar wears, better food that Thappar eats, travel to destinations that Thappar visits?!!💐
Thapar visits Pakistan we do not want to go there
UA-cam should include the "ha ha" emoticon. After hearing this raving, I strongly feel so.
Your generation was a generation of imitators (eat with a fork, speak a foreign tongue, follow foreign ideology). Current generations set their own rules and live as they want.
mental slavery is the appropriate word
This interview reminds me of “Let them eat cake”. --Marie Antoinette. If they can’t have bread left them have cake
I get your point, but about Marie Antoinette, the poor women never said it; she was used by the revolutionaries for propaganda to justify the end of monarchy by guillotine.
Great interview !!!!
everyone should watch the full interview before saying anything bad about these two people......every word they are using about the current situation of India is 100% true 👍
Proud south Indian, I embrace hindi. Its a beautiful language.
Guess what
PM Modi is in Delhi since 2014 and Karan Thapar was never invited for that "dosti Bani rahein" high tea meeting
The pain is so evident
Modi does have guts to face Karan Thapar. He can only talk to scripted media who can ask him how to eat mangoes wether he sucks them and eat.
@@kevincrasto Ask this thappar why never question his masters from Gandhi clan with such severity and malice . They would have cracked a lot more faster didn’t even need so much screwing even .
@@preethishetty6179 He will not be alive if he has the guts to ask them such questions.

Thanks for this and through this interview making me recall the universally observed phenomenon from school days upto the professional positions I had till I was working in India around 2004-05. Just experience it your self and this has been put by Baru in more sophisticated words he spoke or has penned when you quoted from his book. Recall from our secondary school days there were only three well defined category of students in the class and school. First were those who would be toppers and bagging top marks. They were hardly 3-5 in each grade. Then on the other end again hardly 3-5 were those who were good in singing, sports, arts, debaters etc. In the middle category forming 85-90 % were mediocre. They would be seeing on right the toppers and in left the sports, culture oriented lot. While they would be sandwich between the two and with both jealousy + hatred look to either category. And in their heart + mind they would always yearn to "look for their day (like a dog we say in Hindi) to retaliate on both the categories" no sooner they will get the opportunity. What Baru is pointing out is this middle category, Hindi speaking, graduates yes but from some regional Indian university if at they do have a degree. Majority being the alma matter of Shakha for them is a greater recognition to their stature and position compared to the other two categories. So, with power and seat they are ruthless, brazen, uncouth, rustic, aggressive, have no command on language, cannot cite or quote even from the granths, Vedas, Puranas, Upanishads despite harping on Hindutva, doctrine 24x7x365, cannot quote one thing from Kabir, Surdas, Tulsidas, Nanak, Meera, Ravidas, etc. This lot even today cannot write a single grammatically correct paragraph in English, but even in Hindi or the regional language they may be speaking.
Defining categories, undervaluing people, looking up to the elitists who are always anti-majority concepts & pro-minority favouritism, who do not question the inequality, do not question the age old appeasement for power, politics, money, and what not. Can we still live in such cocoon in age of social media?
It is surprising though that for decades the minority 3-5% top class students could flourish, impose their opinions, show elitist attitude, celebrate inequality, survive open favouritism inspite of the majority middle class sandwiched kids being ruthless, brazen, uncouth, rustic, aggressive, with no command on language. Quite an illusion!
. What is the point of being in top class if one does not understand the ground reality of sandwiched middle class?
For once, if elitist educated top class Mr. Ahmad can also comment on how most people in madarsa get never connected to main stream, how they get manipulated and develop anti country, anti-religion sentiments. Also, how some women never get to study as their only right is deemed to be producing children. Maybe, top class can also stand for initiating projects where Vernaculars are taught along with English, build a school or stand for a cause where govt can give affiliation to schools of Vedas- Upanishads where so called dumb shakha kids can learn things rightly.
After all ask not what country gives you, ask what you can give to your country and community
We love your frustration 😂😂
You think about Vietnaam but never try to develop our own Country.
Hindu is not a region it is a way of living (sankriti) in where there is kindness for all religions.
It is always better to think in mother tongue. It gives you better idea. However good you know english, you can not now express and think better than mother tongue. How can using mother tongue makes communal.
Don’t worry about mother tongue just keep using it. Keep thinking in it better for all of us.
Why do you hate desi? Only Lutyens are entitled to rule - what a joke!
If you follow Indian culture and language you are branded as communal.
This obsession with mother tongue is trending to become all pervasive in today's India. Is our mother tongue a gift of our genes or our biology. Certainly not. A nascent and upcoming field like Cognitive Science is saying just the opposite
@@sharadhvyas Who is lutyens?
@@sharadhvyas Indian culture is casteist and based on discrimination. Don't go boasting about Bharat. It is calous and dark.
Their conversation is so focused on the biases and seems to show how to differentiate in between elites as they say if they speak english are better than the elites who doesnt use or think in english.🙏
Mr Thapar means to say If you are native and you represent a local than you are backward and if you know how to be like british and their manners then you are a global citizen.
Identity crisis is bothering him.But it makes him more a follower of chains and barriers created by British India.
thanks for the content, ❤️🖤
The whole interview is all about we are superior to everyone. I guess their all intellectualism is that they can speak fancy English
Wire is anti india news press if you observe all article all anti india....paid by george soreos and few corporates in usa .
Exactly!
@jiene m you haven't heard Karan speaking in Hindi ?
one person who got kicked out from the corridors of power is Karan Thapar, The pain is so evident... Dosti Bani Rahein
The best interview by Karan with Subramaniam Swamy !! Devil's advocate was properly given back by Mr. Swamy !
One good thing happened after BJP coming to power that Hindus feel they are secured and safe. iNC didn’t give such a feeling on contrary we were thinking that in spite of being majorly we were being treated as second class citizens in this country. Indian army became strong and bold and Indian on diplomatic front has become more vocal in protecting our rights on international forums .
We are being recognised as a regional power and and our efforts are being respected in progressing the country and many countries have started reckoning us .
I like the stmt about aspirational India with great confidence. I like "Don't care for spoon and fork but very comfortable with hands with confidence".
This interview was unintentionally funny. Karan Thapar types coming to terms with reality that India (yes, Bharat) has risen!! Sincere request to Mr Baru: please do one with Rajdeep Sardesai :-)
🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️😊
"India" lost to China in1962 when Karan Thapar's father P N Thapar was army chief . "India" again lost to "Bharat" when Karan Thapar was chief of Infotainment Television ............Lol
Great analysis
Great inspiration for all. Need of the hour

So don't be righteous, okay? got it.
These guys have still maintained cheap and anti social attitudes for General public as they think they have right to rule over India by few so called elite
Exact point they were discussing 😂
Sanjaya, you are 100% right. We never thought what class and caste my neighbors belonged to.
Of course not. Although you had to realise (subconsciously) you belonged to the same class and you knew exactly which caste they belonged to also.
I for one think caste doesn't contribute to identity in cities, although it plays a role in most marriages.
Caste is more pronounced in rural India. During the early years polity and poverty led to strengthening of caste identities in rural India. Because caste and class were amalgamated there and there was no avenue for class mobility, polity further fermented caste identity through identity politics.
So actually whereas the old elites like to think they "never thought of class and caste" it has always been the big elephant in the room. To eliminate caste identity you have to be extremely aware and Pro active. you cannot brush under the carpet, like the old elite have always tried to do.
Good to watch their perspective,,,
