    Edit: As you have rightfully made me aware, in the video there are images of the Bronco Sport when I was taking a look at the rear end. This is an editing oversight and also the teething problems of a new channel. We are learning by doing and are not immune to mistakes, as much as we will work to be! Thanks for your patience.
    I hope you enjoy this week's episode! I'm excited to hear what you think about the new Ford Bronco and what you think it's competitors need to do to stay in the game!

      For me, I think design simplification. Competitors like Chevy and Toyota could learn a lot from Ford's use of a clean lines and distinctive graphics on this car. Reminiscent of other recent design successes like the Honda E, Fiat 500, and of course the Mini.

      Toyota should build a "retro" styled SUV based on the Land Cruiser platform. The new one (like nearly all Japanese cars) looks too Transformers-ish. Price it competitively against the new Defender and bring it to the US and Europe, because the latter ain't getting this Bronco, unfortunately.
      Quick note. When you started to talk about the rear section of the cars you actually showed pictures of another model. The Bronco Sport instead of the ' regular' Bronco

      @Thatonechannel don't know what you mean by "sold out" .when the new defender is a production vehicle not an exclusive purchase.

    • @Real_MisterSir
      @Real_MisterSir 4 роки тому +6

      Agreed. I think the new Defender would have been so great if they used it to reimagine the Land Rover Discovery instead. It ticks all the marks, and is what I'd imagine roaming around Mars in, or something of the like.
      The Defender per name value, refers to a car that is a back-to-basics workhorse that tackles anything with a simple approach to functionality, and can be further altered to suit personal specific needs and desires. I see very little of that in the new Defender.
      I really like the car itself, but using it to revive the Defender seems like a missed mark imo.

    • @Akiss
      @Akiss 4 роки тому +5

      @Thatonechannel Defender production has been scaled back, only one shift as opposed to 2-3 in the Slovakia plant. Plus the 22,000 initial orders was seen as underwhelming. Don’t think JLR sees it as a success so far.

    I think Jeep needs to actually start updating the Wrangler more so they don’t get blown out of the water.

    • @ViolentMLG
      @ViolentMLG 4 роки тому +22

      I think the problem with the jeep is that it looks SO Chrysler that its just ugly, especially the interior. It just yells 'cheap'. When your vehicle shares similarities with the PT cruiser, especially over a decade later, you're doing something wrong.
      I think looking at the retro styling approach, the jeep fits within its 1950's design. The only issue is the front end, from a modern or retro prospective.
      I think what they need to do is take the Jeep currently and flatten the front instead of its bubble approach, they need better headlights too, its fine that its circular, it just can be done better, and then take that ugly plastic bumper and do something with that. The front end is too bubbly and bulky in the front end. No modern cars today have bumpers that really stick out like that. That's a 2000's design. Everyone today has a flatter approach with the grill incorporated.
      Even if they wanted to keep the bumper design the same, it needs to be less plastic-cheap looking.
      All of that combined would revolutionize the exterior, then an entire interior redesign would finish it up.

      Remember the bronco exists because of the wrangler, same as the early pre full size broncos. Jeep started it all with the military/willys jeep and the current one stays true to the recipe. Jeep for a long time, had the off road market to themselves, with no real competition.
      Most of the competition, scouts, broncos, samurais, 1gen 4runners, fj40, defenders, faded away, and got replaced by 4 door SUVs, but the wrangler stayed true to form. Where jeep is lacking though, is reliability, l think they need to work on that. The bronco's metal is gonna be tested on the trail, and needs to be proven.
      We know the wrangler can do it. We need more top off doors off 4x4s. I'm glad to see the Bronco, it's gonna be nice to see the comparisons.

    Hey Frank. This was such a thoughtful design analysis. I especially enjoyed your point that people will buy this car because of the message it delivers in a a very forward and outward manner. Its function is very much based on offroading and ruggedness, and that expression is displayed outwardly in a very clear and concise manner.

    I suggested the Bronco so was keen to hear what you had to say. But this was disappointing, I'd like to hear more on design elements: what do you think of the lift in the beltline behind the door (the original was straight which gives it a very clean, functional look), what about the various grills, how the headlight treatment is a play off they original. I didn't feel like I learned anything about design from listening to you, it's just sort of vague rambling.
    Also you showed the rear of the Sport, while not talking about why they created the standard Bronco and the Sport versions.

    I think the way you talk about "retro" and "recreating" is really interesting and a very good point ! Retro cant work in todays industry so we have to adapt whilst bringing elements of previous styles to the new designs.
    I would also love to hear your opinions on the Land Rover Defender? As this is a very futuristic reinvention of the old car and yet still has one or two call backs whilst being a completely new creation !

    I think that something the competition could perhaps learn from the new Bronco, as well as other new niche cars like the Suzuki Jimny and ongoing Wrangler, is that the room for very specialized vehicles is growing. As generic crossovers start to fill the middle segment of doing highway cruises, urban driving, a bit of poor pavement driving, it means that there are tons of available SUV-style cars that do basic day-to-day tasks really well.
    This opens up for the old niche segments where an off roader can get away with simply being a great off roader, and not having to compensate in order to do a lot of other things simultaneously - because all the modern crossovers already do these very well that you couldn't compete even if you wanted to. It means that specialized SUVs now have the freedom of offering experiences for more niche markets and target groups of people who don't want the compromises that designing for generic daily urban driving brings with it.
    I think that catering to these (old) new demands of a more personalized and unique driving experience from utilitarian SUVs, is something that all competing brands ought to focus on. This could potentially be an opportunity that a car like the new Defender has, in a way, wasted its chance with. LR chose to make it go in the direction that perhaps would be better fit for a reimagined LR Discovery - and the Defender could fit the mold of uncompromised back-to-basics workhorse that the old one was famous for, which is very close to that specific segment the new Bronco is venturing into. There is massive potential here, and automakers hopefully realize this sooner rather than later.
    Just my 2 cents :)

    I think what Ford did with the bronco, Jeep has done is first with the Wrangler (Just more gradually). Take a '60s or '70s Wrangler and put it next to a new Rubicon and you'll get the same "jump in the future effect" as the new Bronco is bringing. My point is: if Ford had made an evolution of the Bronco's design every few years to arrive at this point, just as Jeep did, we wouldn't be that amazed.

    Recently found your YT channel and thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. It is very generous for someone of a calibre as yourself. Although I am not a professionel designer, I am highly sensitive towards beauty and styling, specially retro. On this one, I might be one of the few having some reservations. Some lines don't make sense to me, such as the (many) sloped lines in the design elements. They make it too much playmobil for me tbh. I'm sure that other brands simply do have different philosophies. Toyota goes all out on practical serious solid reliability rather than lifestyle playvalue. I'd take a Toyota Landcruiser anytime in Australian outback for example. I'm much more looking forward to the Ineos Grenadier. That's a serious looking prospect and contender.

Interestingly there is a lot about this car that also reminds me of the 80's era Bronco which was one of my father's cars. I really liked this new interpretation from the moment I saw it and wondered "what took you so long?". So now you have a choice of a Rubicon, Bronco or Defender. Thank you for this Frank. Ford definitely did a better job with the new Bronco than Land Rover with the new Defender, which is a great car, but sadly lost most of it's fundamental features and probably should have been called the new Discovery.
    Personally, I still think Jeep did a better job with the latest Wranglers series, I feel they have a timeless design, and the more you go through the Wrangler's quirks and features the more you understand how passionately and dedicated the people at Jeep worked on to make it this amazingly fun to drive, versatile and customizable car. Way before Ford did, and probably still better then the New Bronco on many levels. Cheers

    They may have killed the focus rs, one of the best hatches in the last decade, but this bronco is a 10/10. I absolutely love it. I’ve never liked an suv more except for the old defender.

    There are many cars which have been critiqued time and time again, though few as well thoughtfully critiqued and rated by such a legend in the industry as yourself. If your interested in a stunning new track weapon on the road critiqued by only a very few, I want to bring to your attention the new BT62R from Brabham. I believe this to be one of the best looking cars ever made going after the modern angular design language adopted by the likes of Lamborghini, Ferrari, and Lykan.

    Hi Frank, could you tell us more about your definition of retro? I noticed you mentioned before how badly applied it is by journalists, and I honestly can’t tell anymore what it actually means.
    I do agree with the rough yet beautiful design of the Bronco, looks cooler than any of the modern mustangs imho

    Thank you once again for your insights and comments.
    Will you agree with me that the Bronco could again start a redesigned/ refreshed (retro) race again like the early 2000s when the crysler Pt cruiser came and ford did its t-bird and chevvy did its truck?
    Suzuki also went back to take its Jimny ahead and its been an out & out success.
    Do you think more car manufacturers are going to go back - into the future?

    I find your very competent reviews very interesting. Especially your review of the BMW was very thorough and right to the point. I look forward to your next review. Should it be possible from the cars design to see if it is an EV?

    I would really like to hear your opinion on Porsche Taycan. My personal problem with it was that the car did not resemble Porsche in any way yet the brand is famous for holding up to its traditions that are combined with innovations. Soo it might cause an interesting topic to discuss/share an opinion on imho

    We need a revision of the 1st Gen 4Runner with a Removable top. More truck platform-ish options than just the traditional SUV platform the 4Runner has become. Big tires. Utility packages. Even tho I am a big fan of the new 4runners. More for that adventure driven market just like bronco is targeting.

    Hey Frank, thx for the great vids. I'm a Graphic Designer so love the insight into another discipline. I'd love to hear an episode on the 911. How they keep the look going but modernising all the while. The 992 is obviously a lot bigger than the original and maybe the caboose is a bit too big but the overall form is still superb!

    I really wish Ford would publish more information on the 4 door Bronco with the V 6 as to towing capacity and whether ther will be towing packages. And what are the details concerning the doors with cut outs? Are they glass windows or open air? My two choices are new Bronco or Jeep gladiator. The Jeep gladiator cab doesn’t really have adequate room in my opinion. It needs more width in the cab.

    I also find it very appealing. It has this coolness and non bullshit factor the Bronco had in the movie „Speed“ where Keanu Reeves was driving it in LA. In urban areas the late Defender has the same coolness, the new one not so much.

    Toyota needs to come out with a completely redesigned FJ Cruiser staying true to the original but fixing all the things where it lacked. They never should have stopped making it. It now has the highest resale value of any used car. They also need to redesign the Tacoma and 4Runner to round out their off road segment. I currently have an FJ with over 100k miles on it. I love it but the Bronco was the first car to make me want to trade my FJ. I put my reservation in the first hour after launch. I am VERY excited.

    Hi! Thanks for the analysis. This product is a solid competitor indeed. Easiest response by others would be to redesign existing models in the class. But I doubt that anyone would be able to have this "heritage" as the Bronco. I mean the emotional attachment kind of stuff, especially given the right design choices. So if I were in the shoes of a competitor, I would take the idea a step ahead and add deeper transformation of a car (seats, etc.) and add options with electric motors and batteries. Therefore a potential competitor becomes more relevant to our day and age than a successfully redesigned legend. In conclusion, I doubt that Bronco would end up in endless off-road tours. While an electric one adds a ton of usability. Thanks for your attention and hope my opinion makes sense.
