I like +/- to denote whether above or below the melody, like 1/+3/-5; or for less cluttered, apostrophes and commas to denote notes above or below the melody, like 1/3’/5,
Hi sir Stephen, I'm Nuelle from Africa I just got started with harmony scoring and teaching vocal part. Can you help me with more of this videos to learn on it. Thanks
That's a good question. Sometimes changing keys down is a good option. You can also try flipping the parts down while staying in the original key, and that can work well. There is basically always an arrangement that can work while staying in the original key, it just may take moving some things around to make it comfortable for each part.
Wow, this is a little above my head but i am amazed.
I think most musicians and singers can train there ear to be able to hear this kind of thing, but it takes time and patience.

Interesting. That's a good thought. Would you write it stacked above the lyrics like I showed, or some other way?

I'll definitely consider this. I love arranging vocal harmonies.
@@jonathanstephensmusic my utmost pleasure sir, thanks so much
This was so incredibly helpful! I struggle so badly to find parts and the sudoku reference is what makes it click for me! 🤣 Thank you!
Thanks so much! It is kind of like a sudoku in a way. lol I'm glad you found it helpful!
This is gold - thank you
Thanks so much! I love some good vocal harmonies!
Do you usually go down an octave or move down a half step if the arrangement is too high?

Vocal arranging is my fave 😀 but I don't think my singers could "read" this - nearly all of them have zero music theory knowledge.
Right. This is more of a reference for me, and my singers learn primarily by rote as I sing and play through each part.
I’m more lost now than when I started 😂😂 I’m going to spend a whole day fighting this out
Oh no. That's not the goal. lol Maybe I should do another video as a follow up.
