@@ironmaiden5658 Your argument is flawed. In the sand bucket situation, there is a much higher concentration of sand in the air compared to planets on a galactic scale. Meteorites hitting our earth are relatively small objects that were just drifting around and got pulled in by earth's gravity. In the situation in this video, planets wouldnt be affected by other planets' gravity considering the speed they're traveling at. They would just fly right past

The scale of space is somewhat comforting and terrifying all at once. Think too hard about the nothingness and beyond and you get a feeling of dread, but look at at and you feel safe.
It’s so difficult to imagine that there are thousands of thing happening 100 million light years from us but light doesn’t even go fast enough for us to see it. Blows my mind the vast loneliness of space. Us humans are entirely alone

Just to make you feel a little bit worse, just imagine ALL that must be happening in this very moment across the whole universe. Imagine all the landscapes that we will never see. Imagine all the planets that are being hit by other bodies and exploding without even be discovered (by us). Imagine all the lifeforms that are being extinct by some astronomical event somewhere on the other side of the galaxy... And yet, us, humans, are arrogant enough to build walls because our skin is a little bit different from those other humans...

You can see Andromeda with the naked eye. Why would anyone question this? Maybe just not in a very densely populated city due to light pollution.

I took a photo of Andromeda yesterday. Not very special one tho, since I was using quite wide angle lens.

Well, yes but no. Einstein's theory of relativity is disproven by the simple fact that we cannot measure the true speed of light. A smart theorist for his time, but still a joke today.
It is theoretically possible to close distance of a light year but get older only by few days. If you measure speed as distance divided by the time that passed on your clock that you took with you, there is speed limits.

The speed of light is a constant necessary for Maxwell’s law of electromagnetism to work out.
And Maxwell’s equations proved speed of light must be the same for all observers.

One thing alywas confuses me. I read that things (suns and planets) we "see" out there were actually in the past positions. We see something because the light from that point comes into our eyes. So if we "see" a sun that is a million light years away. It means that that sun was there a million years ago. It's most likely not there anymore "right now". Action Lab please explain this.
That is true, you see things where they were and when they were when the light came out. So when astronomers say they just saw 2 black holes collide, that collision actually happened millions of years ago. But they did just saw it because the speed of light or gravitational waves are that slow.
Was thinking we were gonna see a gun being shot in space for some reason.

I recommend Eve Online. Be careful though. It can be extremely addicting if you take the time to get past the learning curve. The complexity is astounding yet incredibly rewarding.

One of my favorite subjects to ponder
Now the real question is, would life on Earth be effected or would we just see a bunch of stars shooting by?
I think the stars would move and literally only astromists or other ppl who researches the stars would notice, put in to the world and become the new hot topic

@@GHOUSTTM Tides or seasons wouldn't change at all. Like you first commented. Only astronomers would notice anything. Other than the faint glow of Andromeda getting slightly brighter, but most places on earth can't even see the milky way because of light pollution. Most constellations stars are not in the milky way or Andromeda, so the Zodiac signs wouldn't probably change either.
It's possible over millions of years that some orbits will shift. Probably not ours but it's not impossible. In any case our sun will have long since toasted our planet (or more likely humans will have moved the Earth and will have no problem dealing with anything Andromeda throws at us) so we really won't care. We will know several million years in advance of anything major.
We'll just send up Bruce Willis.
First we must survive the plague that affects humanity: humans... then we can worry about Andromeda

Thanks for this! I love the similarities and differences of the universe and the atoms. How they coalesce to make bacteria, to humans, to planets, to suns, to galaxies, and to the universe. The space between each and every entity is so massive, in reference to itself, that it’s highly unlikely to even touch. But gravity gives us the attractive force to coalesce in the first place.

The point you made about atoms though, I'm afraid is a very common misconception that I'd really like scientists to stop spreading. Atoms are not "empty space" at all in the common sense definition of empty.

Actually, depending on how that program is done, since the distance step (your velocity times deltatime) is way higher than the size of the stars, you could be actually hitting them but the program just detects that your are appearing behind them after being on front.
But I'm pretty sure that the program might look for the stars that are between those steps. Just giving an idea that MAYBE you were to hit one but you went through it. Idk

• 2:58 - Yes, but as they get closer, the force of gravity increases and pulls on them harder. Plus, there are a large number of stars and planets in the galaxies, so it's likely that at least one or two stars or planets or asteroids will hit something or other.
• 8:33 - Because it's a simulation. In reality, the star would pull you towards it (it would work better if you weighed more).
• 12:15 - You'd likely be floating slowly, which would allow gravity to pull you in since you wouldn't zip past them.
• 13:24 - Deep Thoughts by Action Handy.
• If the universe is infinite, it is possible to hit something, you just have to wait long enough and go far enough.
8.33 I think the thing we are moving with its a small theoretical spaceship or something, it weighs nothing in galactic scales, you could just travel with it like he showed and the gravity of the stars won't change your way.
12.15 If you are floating slowly, then nothing will pull you in for billions of years. Or, it will, but you won't arrive.
13.24 The universe is most likely not infinite, but whatever, we couldn't comprehend it's size, so it is for us.

During a galaxy merger, the question of stars hitting each other can be understood much more operational than just looking at the star itself, by instead seeing the star as a gravitational system, including planets and other orbiting things, like the Oort cloud. I'd say that stars affecting each others Oort clouds significantly constitutes a collision, leading to significant risk (chance?) of inner planets, like the Earth, being blasted by comets. If extinction becomes a real risk, it is a collision.
Your comment got me thinking, considering extinction risk first requires something that can go extinct. So another question could be: of all the stellar collisions (the kind you've described) during all the galactic collisions in the entire history of the visible universe, how many are expected to cause a full or partial extinction event (even if it's just bacteria)?
@@narfharder My general assumption is that risk of life forms going extinct is roughly proportional to the size, with protection from water and digging into ground also a factor. The low end of this scale means that microscopic life forms have a much lower extinction risk, unless in case of a much more severe sterilization event. Basically dinosaur-killer vs Earth/Thea collision. Risk of smaller events, like 65 MYA, is much higher than the ones making a planet one big volcano.
Of course, the major factor is what life forms the planet already have. Based on a sample of one (yeah, not much), to me it appears that simple microscopic life is not at all uncommon on suitable planets, but complex life slow to form, and blasted by repeated extinction events, is much more rare, and with the long time from complex life to a technological civilization, the latter is a very, very rare thing. Even more rare due to us having no reason whatsoever to assume that such life forms (like us) can be expected to have an endurance even getting close to the dinosaur era.
Basically, I'd expect it to be "normal" for galaxy mergers, even without outright major collisions, to be severely detrimental to life on quite a few planets, with many species going extinct. Due to the rarity of technological civilizations, such infestations would only be wiped out in a tiny part of galaxy mergers, as I'd still expect most stars (including the gravity system around the star) to not be severely affected.
