- Willie Rushton takes on a series of steam train journies around the west country in the UK where he experiences romantic nostalgia, beautiful scenery and a selection of very interesting people all dedicated to The Great Little Trains.
I've only discovered this recently, what a great series. Willie was a mighty character. Would be great if this got an airing on TV again.
I could swear I can hear Boni reciting this haha. R.I.P Legend.
"I think im about to get a headache"

i could listen to him for hours.
Great. Good old Willie Rushton. Witty man and a great cartoonist.
I love Willie Rushton he has such a strong accent and everytime he speaks I always think of Trap Door :D x
You just can't listen to him without thinking of Trap Door. Fantastic voice, just close your eyes and you will see Berk.
Berk probably needed a vacation from him upstairs
R.I.P Willie Rushton.
I remember watching this episode when i was a little kid aged 4 or 5, being fascinated by Willie Rushton's journals to the railways. The South Devon Railway is just down the road from me. I filmed their 50th Anniversary gala recently. I will admit if it wasn't for Willie Rushton and this wonderful show, I probably wouldn't of been inspired to film steam trains or heritage railways even the SDR. Thank you for uploading this childhood nostalgia of mine.
RIP Willie Rushton and thank you for being part of my fascination of steam trains.
Thanks for the comment - I will always remember the fun we had filming the series and there will be other episodes from the series showing once I get time to get them on line. Cheers - Frazer, Producer.
Any WR stories you might have would be madly appreciated by loads of us.
All best!
When willie rushton said steam it feels he’s narrating the railway series
AHHHHHH THE NOSTALGIA HIT! god I must have worn out this tape when I was about 10 and I never thought I'd find the source of all these vague memories
I volunteer on this railway, have done for a few years. Yet i never realised that Rushton (being my hero) had been there. This has made my day :D
11:10 That excitement. Everyone and I mean EVERYONE wants to do that at least once in their life. Even if they aren’t railfans, they still want to do it
@theamateurbasher - Thank you again for your comments - The only thing holding back further uploads are lack of time at this end but they will be there at some point.
It is really great to get so many good comments and it is so sad that we were looking at further episodes when Willie passed away. We did think about using another presenter but as the whole team got on so well with him, we lost heart and left it where he finished as a kind of tribute.
I bet Willie seems jollier when his dreams of driving a steam engine has finally come true. :)
I remember having this with B&WR and WSR taped on a VHS with Classic Trains! =D
Hi - Thanks again for your interest. Great Little Trains ran for 2 x 6 episodes with 2 routes featured in each show making a total of 24 segemts.
The series had a writer, Richard Ireson, who wrote a very clever script linking everything together. Willie worked to this script very closely but of course, he did make comments during filming which were incorporated into the stories. .. As everything was filmed out of order, and often without Wilie being present, it needed a script ccontinuity.
Brilliant
Thank you so much for uploading this.
If this were an audiobook, I'd be picturing Boney from the Trap Door narrating it!
This is fantastic! I remember seeing both episodes when they came out, shortly before Rushton passed away. And seeing him in this makes you really feel that he's enjoying every moment of what was destined to be, one of his final TV broadcasts. Is there any chance of posting the rest of this? It would be wonderful to see the whole thing all over again. Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you for your comments. I am always trying to get the other episodes uploaded but time always seems to beat me. However, I will try to get some others up soon. All the best, Frazer.
Thanks for your comments on Great Little Trains. More episodes will be uploaded in the future. There were 2 television series produced - more info on our web site
I also have a Hardback Book called The Railway Policeman.
The Story of the Constable on the Track.

@frazer8351 That sounds marvellous. Forgive me for making assumptions here, but judging from this and one other sample I discovered elsewhere on the net, it seems to me that Rushton intended to utilize as much of his own humour as possible in this show. Just watching him build the audience's anticipation up when he talks of becoming an engine driver at Dobwalls before revealing the size (or LACK OF) of the engines he was actually driving.... only HE could have thought of that joke, surely!
I love this!
Hi Frazer !
How wonderful to see a little snippet of the series after so many years. I grew up watching the series repeatedly as my gran made the mistake of recording it on VHS for me !
Unfortunately they're long gone now, do you think you will have time to upload some more ?
I'm actually starting to wonder if he passed away during the making of this series. Since this was broadcast in march of 1997 and he died in December of 1996. So maybe this is the last thing he worked on.. Maybe thats why the series was so short.
Hi - Thanks for the comment. The programme ran for 2 series, each of 6 episodes and all were broadcast. When I get time, I am going to add further episodes to UA-cam. Thanks again, Frazer
The signal box at 3:11 even looks like the one from Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends
"Lord Beeching... do you remember him? A name akin to Hannibal Lector's"
Never knew Beeching has such a huge association with hatred. Makes sense, though.
This is brilliant, are you going to upload any more of it?
Hmm... that train at the beginning looks awfully like Wilbert from the RWS...
Hi Liam - Thanks for the comments and glad to know I helped your get your 'Childhood Overload'!
All the best - Frazer - Producer of Great Little Trains.
Thanks for your comment - I did not ever see Trap Door but it certainly was Willie's voice. Cheers, Frazer
@frazer8351 Very intriguing. I often wondered how much of the material was Rushton's own. You seem to know a fair amount about the making of this show. Were you involved in the production at all?
Have you also got the episode where he visits Dobwalls railway in Cornwall? I love that episode esp where he stays at Jamaica Inn which is one of my top favorite inn
I hope that part 2 will be uploaded soon.
I so can't believe that that voice goes with that body. He sounds a lot older than he looks. I recognise the voice of Burke, but can't visual the guy with the beard being the one in the recording studio. It's so unique!! 😀😀😀
I have the Hardback DORLING KINDERSLEY DK EYEWITNESS GUIDES Book of TRAIN.
Discover the story of railways - from the days of steam to the high - speed, sophisticated trains of today.

Voices in the Trap Door!!
@ChristheXelent ....my apologies for my previous ignorance. I've only just realized your position with Ashford Entertainment. Anyways, on bahalf of all who have commented on this clip, I can safely say that we are all looking forward to seeing more episodes with great anticipation!
will u be uploading the rest?
@southtrethevy which railway was it, where he had a new engine named after him? It'd be amazing if you could remember :)
Were all of the episodes broadcast? I have always only ever seen two episodes.
why does he sound the reader from thomas the tank engine from the creator
I love Willie Rushton he has such a strong accent and everytime he speaks I always think of Trap Door :D x
