Quick & Easy RUST Weathering Model Rail Railroad

- As promised here is my way of adding rust to rail models. It didn't go quite to plan but that is just the way it goes. The roof turned out well but I need to practice the weeping type of rust.

In the late 80s and early 90s I'll never forget the sight and sound Orange and Blue Grand Trunk (best livery ever in my opinion) Geeps and big boy SD 40-2s rolling through my small town in Michigan. Really appreciate you and the videos! Super motivated to do some work on my GT box cars now.
thank you sir
I know these are older videos, but I just ran across them. Great weathering techniques. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers
FANTASTIC technique, using the sponges!! I've honestly never tried it before....
Now I want to give it a go!
Great "HOME MADE" advice :) Got the same body, so I try soon.
I just started out in model railroading & these are great tips! Thx!!
Although ya might think some of the weathering is heavy but on this side of the pond many real ones are harshly weathered👍🚂🇨🇦
Thanks for sharing also those weathering pastel pens are really nice for doing texture i find especially when your trying to mimic caked on grime/dirt
I just stumbled across this vid this morning. I agree the roof is a bit heavy, but overall, it still looks good! Great idea on using the packing foam.
Really useful video. Thanks for sharing ... Steve
Very nice! like the look.
The roof was a little exaggerated in my opinion, but still it looks realistic and it's quite nifty. Great video!
Thanks
CarterMc3 I agree, the roof could have been a bit less exaggerated. But otherwise it looks nice!
+GYRUSS Roof looks great! It looks a lot like what you see on prototypical rusty boxcars. Spectacular job, Sir!
I really like your weathering, nice job
Thanks mate.
GYRUSS great video this is way better than a lot of other weathering this helped me a lot
I hit subscribe the second after you said paper towels! XD
Great Job!
If you haven't already, maybe one day try AK interactive rust, thinned with turps it will or can result in beautiful looking rust streaks
Limestone Mills Thanks for the tip.
I've got to second that. The AK products, some are actually BETTER than the products that MRR companies sell to US! The War Game guys have some NICE weathering and scenery supplies.
Very nice work, well done
Thanks mate.
Thank You for the great tips!
I’m glad the video was of help.
Awesome some works thank you so much for the how too. I wanted to weather my freight cars but I don't have an airbrush thanks to yo u I don't need it anymore
You are very welcome.
So uh I live by a rail yard and there’s is like a section where f track where the juts let cars rust away I mean it’s rust not rolling stock
Thanks Dave
Interesting how to video liked and subscribed cheers Kevin
Thank you very much
Really useful video. Thank you sir.
Thank you very much.
Awsome job!
Thank you.
nice work
Thanks mate
I used this to make my broken Hornby E2 class look like it’s in a scrapyard
Excellent to hear this. I would love to see the outcome.
Nice job you have done on that
Great video series..
+Jfrdesigner Cheers
Thank you sir.
So that's how you do it eh?.............Thanks, I might give it a go sometime........David
Indeed
What kinda paint are ya using? Acrylic or lacquer base? My cheapo eye shadow make-up looks just like that Tamiya weathering powder. I can get about 12 different colours of eye shadow make-up of earth tones plus rust--in one container for $1.00 at the Dollar Tree store. It actually sticks better than weathering powders.
What type of paint oil or acrylic ?
I try to use acrylics if possible
\just saw your video. Well done.
Like a previous commenter, I thought the roof was a bit overdone. But hey.
Was it bauxite paint you used to get the rust effect, or was it a trade-name 'Boxite'.
i liked your use of paper towels and the packing case sponge.
Thanks for watching. It is a bit overdone but I wanted to demonstrate the technique I use and what variations you could achieve.
Just fyi those "struts" are called ribs
I'm no expert at weathering, but it seems to me that if the car is that old, and the roof and side ribs are as heavily weathered as you made them out to be, that a lot of the sides between the ribs would be a little more weathered or at least a duller blue. Maybe it's just the way the lighting is hitting the car, but the sides are a bit too shiny for the amount of rust on the rest of the car. I know you weathered it prior, but perhaps a little further on the sides would have been more realistic. No offense intended. Still a good job.
before you put your paintbrush onto the model, blot some of the paint off of it on a paper towel.
if you need graffittos on them let me know
+yours truly Thank you very much for your kindness.
I work at a paper mill do not remember a car looking like that
Thanks for your feed back. The video is more a demonstration of adding rust rather than a real world application of this particular car.
Google images will definitely yield pics of older cars that do look like that. All depends on the age of the car you are modeling.
waste of paint
