That's a good observation. In a sense the UK reminds me of Russia. In the Russian psyche, the wars against Napoleon and Hitler were wars against the West that they won and the Western allies that Russia/USSR did have are erased from memory. The UK, follows the same pattern, in their mind the war against Hitler was a war against Europe and the allies get erased. It's an oversimplification of history into an us vs the world pattern. I remember watching some Russian documentaries and in their interpretation, the Western allies were trying to use Russian blood while they only paid their way to victory, they're described as almost treacherous. Trying to win, but without risking their lives, while Russians were giving it their all.

If anything, the fact that people supposedly on the *less* gammon-y end of the spectrum still say such things suggests that the problem is the opposite: some of the very ugliest tendencies, like xenophobia, lack of respect for sacrifices made to defeat fascism, and this almost American-level of delusional exceptionalism, showcase what "British values" and being "really British" is all about...
Every comment like this on channels that disapprove of Brexit and wish to see it undone make my head spin.
There is no higher moral ground from which to criticize Brexiteers whose votes were motivated by despising foreigners when you can't refrain from getting down in that same mud with them.
There are a half billion reasons to despise Sunak, that explain his behavior and this particularly egregious act of both disrespect and idiocy without indulging in insults that make you seem no (morally) better than he is.
...and as a point of history, Indian soldiers were part of the Allied forces, losses on D-Day, and a few (very few, naturally... what with their not being British enough, of course) later honored for particularly courageous actions... all in spite of their not even having imigrated to Britain at all, and so clearly being incapable of understanding the significance of these actions! 🙄😮
