I felt like I needed to practice some new miking and mixing techniques. I've also been listening to the Black Keys record, Brothers, a lot, and I love the sounds they're able to get. So for this video, I tried to get into some nitty gritty details of groove and production to practice my time, mixing, and general music-making skillllzzz. I hope you enjoy the grooves. It was fun making a non-song but still music ish kind of video.

@therealfox95 - this is a long answer. i don't have a "job" like a 9-5 thing. but i work really hard. i make a new video each week, which takes way more than 8 hours per day, and the videos promote my album catalog on iTunes. between my mp3 sales, and my band's mp3 sales, and the occasional licensing deal (samsung, hyundai, those things...) i make enough $ to survive. it's a new world. you don't need fame and fortune to be a musician. you just need... youtube! man the internet is cool.
Literally on the list of BEST MUSICIANS EVER!
I have butterflies in my stomach and shivers down my spine, that's how good this is.
Jack, could we have like one of these every month or so. They're so entertaining and great to show off your versatility! Well done for being so awesome and shiz!
Funny how these various grooves that I hear fit so well in various grooves of my ear.
Please make full versions of all these songs because they are SO tight!
1st and 2nd are off the wall awesome. Lovin em.
I had a friend toss me Brothers and I couldn't do anything for the next month. They do a lot of things well. Glad you're enjoying it.
I loved every friggen groove and I want to hear more. Please. With a cherry on top.
You could make full versions of all these songs and release them as an EP :)
At first I heard him play these awesome grooves. When I replayed it a few times, I heard him play Avon, Only Dreaming, Twice as Nice and Telephone, in my imagination. That was fun too.
I keep coming back to this video, it's just great.
I WANT ALL OF THESE TO BE SONGS PLEASE
THIS, is what I want to do for a living.
Jack, you're simply awesome
"it's a new world. you don't need fame and fortune to be a musician. you just need... youtube! man the internet is cool." that is so fucking inspiring i think I'm gonna start uploading videos of my band...
3rd groove was my favorite. Reminded me a lot about Gulf and Push. I love the hard work that you put into creating these videos and wonderful songs :)
You should try a 7/8 tempo, but leaving the crash in quarters, so you get one measure in sync and one out of sync. It's nice!
Love the rawness of the music. Wish my pratice sounded this way. Love the groove Jack!!
oh maaaaaaaan i can totally hear Brothers in this. soooo good!
love that album.
Jack! hey you gotta see The Black Keys live their amazing! i love your music and i can here the keys in these riffs
Brothers is an amazing album to pick up inspiration from. Love your taste!
the way that The Black Keys gets that really "dirty" sound is because they own one of the few all analogue studios still around. once anything goes digital it gets "clean".
one way to get the "dirty" or "warm" sound is by running everything through tube-preamps then into your digital equipment.
i'm positive that this will end up being remixed together by jack to make some amazing song that will blow our minds
i can't wait to hear some more Black Keys-esque music. I love The Black Keys, and i love Jack Conte.
Dude, it's ABOUT TIME! :D I've always LOVED the ideas and textures you've gotten, and the original sounds you never cease to come up with, but I could never help thinking "Man that sounds cool, but I wish he would have mic'd and mixed things a little more ___", with the blank be clearly or bigger sounding or whatever. Since I'm training to be a sound engineering for a living, it's my job to be picky, so don't feel bad. Anyway, I could already hear a HUGE difference in the sounds you made here.
Absolutely loving the 2nd groove.
Dimsum solid sounds, man.
You've already got me anticipating the sound of your next album release.
Even when he is screwing around he makes great music! Musical Genius!
1. On the second groove, I see you've got the St. Anger snare drum. Gutsy.
2. Shaved head! I love it.
Even listening to you practice is entertaining, Jack! You are truly an awesome talent! Yayy!!!
love the second one. keyboard sounds amazing in it.
Those were all fantastic especially the last one.
Mr. Jack!! Lovely! Your drumming is taking leaps man, way to go! Love the grooves and the new gear is exciting!
I definitely hear Brothers in there. Awesome sounds.
I can almost tell which songs on the album each groove has been inspired by. 0:54 has a very Black Keys sounding snare. And 1:22 sounds a hell of a lot like Everlasting Light. Good stuff Jack!
Nice to step outside of your box. It is easy to fall into a grove (read rut) but good to see you recognizing the need to expand. Great work and a body of work.
yeah man the last groove totally sounds like it could be off of Brothers. The Black Keys have been one of my favorite bands for the past 3 years and I really dig the audio style they are able to get when they record.
I hope to see some of these grooves evolve into songs in the near future. Great work Mr Conte. Keep it up :)
awesome Jack - just received your VS4 today - shipped all the way from the States to lil ol' England... loving your work and the album is great. please never stop making music... :)
@particularlylazy I should say, this is one of my favourite videos from you in the last few weeks (Apart from VS4 stuff)
The third one definitely needs to be a full song.
Second one is fire
Such a good way of starting a new day. *plays it again*
The 3rd lick is like Gulf's meaner older brother... All the grooves are tasty Jack, keep up the good work!
CAN'T STOP WATCHING, JACK STOP I HAVE A MIDTERM TOMORROW!
I'm always in awe of your music skillz. love the grooves. :)
The groove at 0:51 is absolutely slick!!!
So awesome! More of this please!!
SLINKY! Wow this is awesome. I look forward to hearing all the stuff you can come up with! This is a great heads up!
love the sound off the snare in the 2nd one, was almost overpowering but sounded tuned to the song.
@Apotheosis323 - For this video I started with drum beats - which isn't how I usually write songs. I usually start with a melodic line and a set of chord changes. But for this video I wanted to focus on groove. So I laid down drums first. then the main rhythm instrument, either guitar or keys. for my next record, I'm thinking about starting with beats and textures as opposed to melodies - it's a scary shift, cuz i want to keep my music melodically driven, but i think it could still work.
Jack Conte
mooooore please! each one of these needs to be a new song
overall great!, the riff at 1:12 ish reminds me a lot of Gulf, which is by far my favorite of your songs. keep up the good work!
Jack, you are my hero. Thank you.
You are so talented - thank you for sharing your talent with us - it is so appreciated
Send more brains.....Brilliant, can't wait to hear what these eventually become.
love the snare sound at 0:58
I LOVE THEM ALL!!!
Ooo, the tune that starts at 0:50 is my favorite. I'd love to hear an extended version of it ^_^
Great riffs All of them are great the keyboard and feel of the fourth riff reminds me alot of everlasting Light by the black keys from the same album jack was listening too i can see the Heavy influence in the sound awesome all the way through :P
can you make them into full blown songs?! I love Black Keys too and the snippets sound aaaamazing!!!
Groove number 4 at 1:13 really gets me flying =D Jack is the best !!!!!
you should definitely try and cover one of there songs. like everlasting light. great album and great job jack
Every single one of these grooves would make a great videosong if you'd build on top of what you played here :o
Make that third song happen for realz. We need some greatness comin from that!
0:50 Love the hi-pass on the intro, and then the big phat stereo panned fuzz
I like the Whoosh Up camera effect at the beginning. Nice grooves !
man that was sweet love em all, but especially the second and third
I hope that you make a song out of each one of these grooves in the future!
Yes, yes, yes Jack! Come on! On my audio system sounds excellent base!
Please make a long version of all these Tracks!Great!
Jack, this is simply amazing! I love this montage! I'm happy that you've shared it with us and am now wondering if you'd have any qualms of me using these as sound beds for my blues radio show?
I love the Slinky. If I didn't just watch it, it'd drive me nuts trying to figure out what made that sound.
@jackcontemusic It will work, I think. Your sense of melody and chord structure has always been fantastic. As a guitarist, I really like the approach you take to guitar in general. You get fantastic textures out of the instrument that I am sometimes in awe. Like your James Bond theme cover? The distorted guitar you got in that was fantastic!
Anyway! I think coming from the groove-based approach would be great - you have a bit of a knack for it, as this video suggests.
Yeah that middle groove rocks! Definitely a little Black Keys-ish too.
@jackcontemusic so ur a pfofessional musician and a professional youtuber! awesome! and i can see ur passion ur dedication to what ur doin. keep it up!
@tensionishere it sound like the time signature is a bar of 8/8 then a bar of 7/8. it's really sweet stuff!
hello jack,
i also love the black keys album.. its really a great piece of music, well produced and so much vibe.. but the black keys used only 2 mics to track the drums! 1 mono overhead! and 1 bassdrum mic. all the additional percussion overdubs are spread over the stereo spectrum. greets from vienna, and btw.. i like your stuff..
you are insane jack. so many props to you!
Just like my practice sessions. Except that I only play one instrument, and I tend to mangle the same four notes over and over again.
Thanks for a window into what actual musicians do to practice. I am inspired to mangle a fifth note!
I like the new look. I love the new beats.
love them all!
i just can't get over how much i love you, man. @w@
my socks, they are rocked off, where did they go?
I wish this music was a preview of vs5 I'm loving vs4 so much I'm ready for your next album
I REALLY like the one at 0:50. Well done!
Awesome beats....I'd buy an album of just this.
OK Jack that second thing you did was rocking... and the third... aw heck all is cool
Liked all of them, but 2nd and 3 are especially "WOW".
This is awesome.
Love this man! Release a free download! :D
Sweet, I have the same oxygen8. Keep on doin what you do Jack, you're amazing.
Loved the stereo mixing ♥
0:51.
this one is just pure genius.
Love the first and third grooves! Keep 'em comin' Jack, absolutely love your work. On the off chance that you read this comment I'd like to request a nice recording of Oh Hell! It's hands down my favorite of your songs. Jack and coke got nothing on Jack and 'cordion.
The Riff starting at 0:50 is Killer!
The third and forth ones were sweet!
Love the use of the apple on the snare!! HAHAHA!!
Have you considered making an instrumental album? Fantastic vocals and songwriting aside, the instrumentals to your songs always seem like a great listen to on their own, as well.
the 2nd and 4th groove are awsome
Mix sounds good. What mics are you using?
A slinky. You're a madman, Jack. Great stuff as always.
