I am honored to have this be one of the first black metal records I listened to, along with Spiritual Black Dimensions and Cruelty and the Beast. What a time to be 14.
One of the greatest piece of metal ever written.
"we were in a situation where band members were not available at all time" LOL no kidding Ihsahn
They were in prison, ah :D
@@vadrrigar5084 Well i don't know what to say about this album, i am not a specialist for talking about tecniques and make a comparison to "In the nightside eclipse". But I like every single tracks of this album, so i think i just like it.
@@vadrrigar5084 I love both albums, but Anthems was quite technical and intricate for its time and it's still harder to play then the vast majority of black metal. The riffs themselves are difficult and there is a whole lot of layering.
😂
@@vadrrigar5084 Art is meant to be experienced. It's all about sensitivity. Anthem was the most technical and distorted album of its era. I had an epiphany the first time I heard the loss and curse of reverence.
The best euphemism I've heard in a looooong time hahahah...'band members were not available at all times'.
Norwegian tact.heh
Nothing and no one could or will ever touch this album
Ihsahn and Emperor have always stood head and shoulders above other bands of their era, in terms of their musical intelligence. The first time I heard Anthems, I was blown away.
Just saw emperor for the first time in montreal july 2018. totally kicked ass. Gotta love the sophistication and articulation of ihsahn's descriptions of his effort in making such complex music. great video!
That wall of sound live is soo flipping epic ! Already saw them 5 times. The advantages of living in Europe :)
I saw it also. Ruled so hard. I almost feel like they are better musicians now than they used to be.
Montreal doesn't exists. It's an illusion.
02:24 This is what impressed me about the symphonic approach to black metal when I first heard it. There's certainly a sonic wall that musicians can hit in terms of how dynamic their music is when the number of BPMs in their music starts to surpass the upper levels of the human heart rate and they limit themselves to only three instruments. I enjoy extreme sounds of all types, but the fastest songs tended to be either very short (like those 10 second grindcore songs) or a long punishing wall of noise. I can appreciate the necro style as a unique approach to recording that was once a central component of the Norwegian sound, but it definitely has not aged well with the migration to digital (to me, Necro BM songs have the same sonic quality of any pop recording that is compressed at the lowest bit rate, and that takes a lot of the interest away from it). Greats like Ihsahn (although he is in a class by himself, IMO) took a step back, giving their songs more breaks and playing around with tempo changes, giving the instruments breathing room and finding other sounds in the higher frequency range to compliment the wall of noise rather than compete with it and muddy it even more. They didn't have to shy away from the intensity of the genre to do that. "Anthems" is certainly not an ultra-clean sounding album with a slow pace throughout, but it doesn't sound like a bunch of crusty teenagers circle jerking in a garage as fast as they can, either. Some may disagree, but I found that the bands going for an "epic yet brutal" sound were more interesting to me than those whose approach to experimentation was just to go "brutal x 2". I think "not giving a shit" what other people say is really important for any musician, but especially for metal, because any scene based on very aggressive sounds will always be full of purists that knee-jerk to even the slightest deviation from the original formula and try to posture among each other over who is most "true". It's a net negative if the audience's constant negativity forces the musicians to lose interest in what they do, because those "fans" aren't giving the world anything other than their 2 cent opinion.
Brilliant words wich I totally agree!!!
that album is so good, one of my favorite
Hail Emperor ! Hail Ihsahn !
Such an inspiring musician.
Love your music Ihsahn...Following your evolutionary process....the stages of your journey that brings you to this point.....still true to yourself....the dedication to perfecting your musical style....you are the voice of your music.
So glad that I could see and hear Anthems in its entirety at Brutal Assault last year, it is certainly what i consider Emperor's best album and what i consider one of the best black metal albums of all time
You are the man, anthems is the album, sweater is sweater
"This being in the early years of black metal, we were in a situation where... Band members were not necessarily available at all times."
LOL, you mean everyone in the band except you were in fucking jail. 😅
Loved this video. What a great artist!
Ihsahn owns some lovely jumpers.
I remember importing this album and getting blown away by it in a boombox back in the late 90's. it was confusing and wild. As time advanced and got more musical education I started to appreciate it more and more. It is now my top 1 album of the genre. There isn't any other one better so far.
Some of his new stuff is pretty amazing, like clean vocals and thundering bass that could be almost on commercial radio but then you will have his black metal chords underneath adding an unsettling tone and other sounds that keeps it impossible to pin down.
What a nicely spoken guy. Cool of him to give the nod to Quorthon and Bathory.
the last bit he said, you can basically apply that to anything creative. wise words
This was the album that got me into black metal. A masterpiece to this very day!
Best black metal album ever, in my opinion. The intro to that album is so epic I'm getting chills everytime.
A game changer for me personally...their best album.
Masterpiece album, and I could listen to Ihsahn all day :) The guy is awesome.
Great video. This man is at the top of the game.
Thanks for posting this.
Very talented fella!
My favorite metal album of all time
Masterpiece album!!!🔥🔥🔥
I prefer Eclipse. It stands as the best Black Metal album ever made in my eyes. It was a big part of my identity as a teenager, and gave me strength during hopeless times. It still takes me on a journey all these years later.
One of the greatest metal albums ever made, not just within black metal. It took the genre to new heights musically.
This album can only be appreciated when it’s so loud you feel like you’re caught inside of a tornado.
The symphonic/keyboard parts make this album heavier
Emperor lose Mortiis (their lyricist) and then lose Faust their drummer due to a murder and then still get better without them. Much credit to them for persevering through adversity.
Didn't Samoth also do some time for arson?
@@revylokesh1783 yeah, 16 months
Because of Ihsahn. Samoth was in jail while Ihsahn wrote Anthems.
@n n Yes. Better.
@@ferox965 Opinion.
Anthems should be heard by all the human race.
@Kasey Nicholson /s
@Kasey Nicholson Roger that.
@Kasey Nicholson fake news
Love this philosophy.
Anthems is a masterpiece.
I🖤 Anthems
This album was the first ablum i bought from emperor.. And my favorite album of them all... I wish emperor was still making albums.. 😞
Emperor albums in 2019 would sound nothing like Emperor albums from 1997. One of the reasons they are popular is because the released a limited set of albums all within the same style. Samoth and Trym wanted to play more death metal, Ihsahn wanted to play more progy epic stuff.
It's time for that beloved Tonight Show tradition,12 Days of Christmas sweaters!!
He's come a long way...
*LEGEND*
Genius
Truly as close to a PURE MUSIC6as black metal has.

Ihsahn is the Grieg of our time.

Máster ihsahn!
Fucking master piece
He´s genius
I Am 800! :D
anthems is the master of puppets of black metal
EMPEROR
BLACK METAL for PRESIDENT.. YES?
An album not just being a "collection of songs" is lost a lot nowadays.
I really wish Welkin would be remixed. I think it would sound amazing with a little more modern production. Im sure i am the only one but oh well
It took several years for this last metal genre (to date) to take shape, and it was recorded in Grieghallen, it also took several church burnouts and murders to give birth to.
This way the next genre would appear in nuclear fires, god save...
I hope nothing ever comes out about ihsahn being a terrible person in the early BM years. That would break my heart. He seems so nice and down to earth
You mean when he walked on the ashes of a burnt church ? 😜
"The band members weren´t necessarily available at all times".
What a beautiful euphemism for being in jail :)
and you made the vocals almost inaudible, good job..
When Symphony music takes crack cocaine
Ihsahn jipster to the welking and dust you look no is metal is jipsteriano
Wait, we are for 5 likes to 666? Really? No one gonna help?
Ok,but why Anthems has so awful, shitty cover art??
Great music, deep lyric and...cover art from refuse dump.
Of course you get to think that, but i think it's absolutely stunning🤘
