Never heard of UR 1830 BC before, that looked amazing! I got a copy of Santiago on my shelf just waiting to get played.. Hard one to get people excited for but wow does it look great.
Santiago is soooo good. It’s for sure in my Top 5 of all times. The way the secondary auction phase is basically just everyone trying to bribe the player with the control of the irrigation path is one of my favorite mechanics of any game ever

Great video thank you. As a resident of the UK, we actually played the new El Grande the other night 😮. In all honesty, i didn't realise we had an earlier release over here, but it's nice for a change because we're usually 6 months behind you guys. Happy New Year to you and your viewers. Let's make 2024 a good one 👍
Thank you and happy new years to you and your family as well! Yea I won’t lie I’ve been pretty jealous seeing all of the UK gamers getting their hands on it so far ahead of us 😅 even my local game shop looked at me crazy when I mentioned there was a reprint coming any day lol
New to board games and new to your channel as well. Was checking out this video for new games in 2024 and bus is a bonus. 😊 El Grande and Kelp look interesting!
Hey welcome to the channel and to a great hobby! There’s so many games out there it can be really daunting where to start. I always recommend trying to find your closest friendly local board game shop and see if they have game meetups so you can experience a few other games with other people and try to hone in on what you like and dislike in the hobby
I played El Grande for the first time last January and have been resisting the urge to grail shop for the Big Box in anticipation of this year's reprint. From the looks of the early reviews and unboxings, it seems like it was worth the wait - especially at that price point!! Nice to see Indonesia and Lords of Vegas in there too!
Yea I’ve been trying to add the Big Box version to my collection for years too and when I first heard about this one about 6-8 months ago I’ve been fighting that exact same urge 😅
Kelp, Evacuation, and Cascadero are also on my list, but I'm really looking forward to Atlas Lost and Unconscious Mind as well. Andromeda's Edge also looks great, too. I've never heard of Ur 1830 BC, but I'll definitely be looking into it! I will say, El Grande definitely deserves that #1 spot, though! Very happy to see it back in circulation.
I don’t know how I missed Unconscious Minds but it’s deff been the game the most people have talked about in my comments so I will for sure be checking that one out too! 🙌
I must say that you bring something else to boardgame table with your content. At first I thought why is he explaining how he ordered his top 10... but then as your list goes on and on you provided some very logical comments and described (and showed!) a lot about those games. Very well done. 👍
Thank you for the kind words! I’m glad people enjoyed my little breakdowns and backstories because I was worried I was nerding out and rambling too much 😅🙌
@@CardboardHunter interesting comments + showing the game you're talking about (pictures speak far more then words when it comes to this hobby, at least for me), this is where you shine.
Nice list! Been eyeing the new El Grande after hearing so much praise for it, will have to place an order soon! Gamenerdz says it's coming out this month? Anyways, great to learn of some other games to look out for, Kelp and Cascadero sound especially intriguing, thanks for the details! Too bad I missed the new Cyclades KS!
The old Cyclades is still a killer game too, I deff recommend trying to score a second hand copy! Also please be aware I’ve been made aware that the Amazon copies of Kelp are counterfeit
Yea I just randomly came across it myself and freaked out a bit. The 2nd Edition has been out for a while, which has a slightly different map and some mechanic tweaks from the original and I believe this new version will be a reprint of the same edition with the components or board altered a bit but no mechanic changes. They may call it 3rd edition, but I haven’t been able to tell yet.
Same! I think it will do well because Undaunted has gotten so much hype but so many people are turned off by historical wars, they feel a bit too real to people, but think one will be fantasy enough to welcome way more people into it
@@CardboardHunter I agree. I forsee this version doing well for those exact reasons. I also think those that speak highly of the previous undaunted series will come out and support this change in theme. Looking forward to seeing this channel keep growing. Happy New Year!
Me too! Just please keep in mind that I discovered after this video the Amazon copies are counterfeits! There’s a link from the publisher in the description of the video but basically just wait to snag a copy at your local game shop to be safe
David Thompson and Trevor Benjamin are two of the most prolific designers of the past few years. The undaunted system was such a revelation and I’m glad they are having such success!
I’m so pumped for the Splotter reprints. Plus the new Food Chain Magnate may deliver by the end of the year. This is going to be a wild year for Splotter fans!
Thanks for the video! Some of the games are a bit heavier than I can handle, but I appreciate your perspective. Cascadero sounds like a really good one for more casual gamers like me.
Yea Cascadero should be plenty light enough for even new gamers. I think Reiner Knizia as a whole is a great place to start and get a feel for various types of euro games before trying out the heavier stuff
Thanks for the list and thoughtful descriptions. I'm still very new to modern tabletop gaming (backed Return to Dark Tower a few years back but nothing since until Nov/ Dec of last year as I started heavily following board game content creator streams), so there's quite a few games on your list I've not heard of which is always good. Happy New Year.
Well welcome into a lovely hobby! One of my recommendations for newer gamers into the hobby is find your closest local board game store and ask them if there’s a weekly or monthly board game meetup at their establishment. It’s a great way to play some great games but more importantly learn what styles and mechanics you mostly enjoy so you have a little bit to go on when first buying games for your collection
@@CardboardHunter There's definitely a couple places nearby (one's a movie theater!) and at least pre-pandemic Charlottesville, VA hosted a small but enthusiastic gaming convention (actually I'm not sure how small it was, it was in a Holiday Inn, so maybe it was bigger than I thought. We have plenty of other hotels around that probably wouldn't cost as much to host).
When I was pretty new to the hobby, some of us in my game group got into Root, I was tasked with the teach. Being fairly new, I didn't realize the teach was long. It always seemed pretty reasonable considering how great the game is. Then, I played El Grande and deeply appreciated the elegant design. My copy is in German, so I am debating getting the new version just to be able to read the cards.
Yea I think Root is a brilliant game if everyone learns it before hand. I think of it like I think of Magic The Gathering, it’s just not something you should learn before the play lol. And yea I completely agree on El Grande, they just nailed every mechanic perfectly. For that low cost for the reprint, I can’t see you going wrong getting the new version
You’re very welcome! Glad people are enjoying my little stories and backgrounds because I was worried I was rambling too much about stuff others wouldn’t care about 😅
Undaunted is a fantastic system, played a good amount of the original and North Africa, haven’t had a chance to play Stalingrad or Battle of Britain yet. The jump to future sci-fi is a bit jarring, but honestly a welcome change. Reminds me of how Battlefield 1942 eventually made it to 2142, which was flipping awesome haha.
@@CardboardHunter haha Hell ya! I don't really upload video content much these days but I am remaking halo 4 into a game that looks more like Halo infinitea
Appreciate the focus on classic great games and not chasing the new hotness. El Grande is an absolute incredible game even after all these years. Glad to see it finally back in print.
Thank you! I love my older evergreen titles and to me no game is more of an evergreen game than El Grande. Another channel I love for highlighting great older games is Board Gems, highly recommend checking him out!
I sold El Grande BB for $30 back in 2017 when I found the original and I still regret it. The way they just threw it in the back of their truck and barely looked at me made me instantly regret the whole thing. 😢
Yea I’m not sure how interested I am in the campaign version of the game, though I love the bigger board. I think I want to try the base version first but I know for myself I just never get campaign games tabled
@@CardboardHunter they use the word “campaign” but if y’all got time to play, the 3 acts can be played in one sitting. The base game is actually fairly easy to learn and teach and once your group has a good understanding of that, the campaign just adds on top of it. This is anecdotal and worked for me and my friends who all tested out the base game and the first act of the campaign :)
@@dango4ever719 Very interesting. Thanks for the insight! The version that comes with the campaign can also still be played as the base version too, right?
Root is definitely a tough teach for new players. It's such a great game that it's always worth it! That being said, I'm excited to see what Arc brings to the table for 4x and trick taking.
Completely agree! It Arcs finds that right balance between mechanics and fun that I know they have the ability to master then Arcs will be a game I play into the ground in 2024 lol
You actually might be right, I just looked at it again and it does look a bit sus. I just assumed that was how they were taking preorders. Thanks for the insight!
@@CardboardHunter that's definitely the fastest way to get started, but if they are completely new to Root you'll have to walk them through their first turn. The game is so damn rewording to play once you establish a consistent group and play with all expansions + adset. No other game has scratched that itch for me, but I have played Arcs on tts and it's really good.
This video is really my first look at upcoming games, so I definitely learned a lot! Kelp and Lords of Vegas look the most interesting to me. The 2 games I’m anticipating this year are Kickstarters from the same designer, Carl Van Ostrand: Bardwood Grove and Merchant's Cove Master Craft.
Just tabled my older copy of Lords of Vegas with my family yesterday and it was such a fun time. Even my little 10 year old brother got the hang of it after only a few rounds and loved it
Just discovered your channel. Great editing btw. Kelp looks interesting as a two player. Was about to order and read the comments about Amazon copies being knockoffs. ElGrande also looks great. Preordered because of this video. :)

Looking forward to Kelp - always looking for more 2 player games!
Me too! Though I will wait to play it first to see where it would fit in my collection because I have a lot of 2 player games already 😅
I sold El Grande BB for $30 back in 2017 when I found the original and I still regret it. The way they just threw it in the back of their truck and barely looked at me made me instantly regret the whole thing. 😢
That’s even makes me sad! 😭 hopefully when they finally played it they learned to properly appreciate and not treat it like a piece of plywood lol
Remember Arcs is launching with 2 versions. The base game with little to no asymmetry and the campaign game with lots of asymmetry!
I'm particularly interested in Evacuation. The mechanics seem really interesting.
That one has quickly jumped up the list since I recorded this video lol. I’ll be picking my copy up on Wednesday 😅🙌
Can’t wait for my copy of endeavour to fulfil
I am also very excited for Chtulhu Dark Providence.
I have really high hopes for it and it certainly beats the price point for 1st edition right now 😅
Root is definitely a tough teach for new players.
Always surprised by the differences in release dates for some games. Solid list!
Thank you!
looking forward to more content on arcs
Thank you! 🙌
10 through 6 were on my list, but 5 and 1 look great.
Nice list. Cannot wait for the remake of Lords of Vegas! So excited!!!
Thank you! Hopefully the reprint doesn't take too much longer before it hits retail!
Afaik Cyclades Legendary still has a late pledge opening up in January
Thanks for the heads up!
Great list! Already have el grande but the reprint looks tempting hahaha
Thank you! 🙌
Wow didn’t know there was a remake of study in emeral. I will definitely have to check that out
Yea I’m so excited for it!
kelp on amazon is a scam the game was on KS and release end 2024
You actually might be right, I just looked at it again and it does look a bit sus. I just assumed that was how they were taking preorders. Thanks for the insight!
Arcs gameplay looks pretty cool
Yea I’m pumped to finally try that one out in 2024
Teaching Root 💀
lol right 😅😭
Proud Root expert/teacher here. So hyped to do the same for Arcs
Do you find it does get easier after you’ve taught it a few times? Do you tend to give the new players a little homework before the first session?
@@CardboardHunter that's definitely the fastest way to get started, but if they are completely new to Root you'll have to walk them through their first turn. The game is so damn rewording to play once you establish a consistent group and play with all expansions + adset. No other game has scratched that itch for me, but I have played Arcs on tts and it's really good.
@@JAMman I really need to get some more games of Root in this year, you've got me all pumped up for it again! haha
@@CardboardHunter my #1! Definitely try to get some more games in
Interesting video. Thank you for new games to look into.
You’re very welcome! Happy gaming in 2024!
Great list. I'm starting to believe that they will eventually remake all 700-ish games of Reiner Knizia xD
Haha my wallet cannot survive such a future!
Even my little 10 year old brother got the hang of it after only a few rounds and loved it
Nice video, I enjoy your presentation skills 😬
Thank you! I was worried my ADHD was getting the best of me and I was going over a bunch of extra details no one would care about 😅
Just discovered your channel. Great editing btw.
Kelp looks interesting as a two player. Was about to order and read the comments about Amazon copies being knockoffs.
ElGrande also looks great. Preordered because of this video. :)
Glad you found the channel and thanks for the compliment! I've been learning all this youtube and editing stuff since I started a few months ago and it's been a lot of fun! Glad you saw the comments about the counterfeit Kelp. I wish I would have caught that before I posted the video but thankfully so many in the community reached out to me and the publisher and made us aware pretty early so we've been able to post about it
El Grande is definitely the game I look forward to the most!
For sure! I can’t wait to get my hands on it!
