I love finding a car sitting in the yard for years, put in some love, time and resources, and getting it back on the road. It's what being a car guy is all about
Growing up(back in the 80's), my buddy had a 76 Dart (standard version) that we kinda fixed up with a bit of bondo and spray paint. No it wasn't anything of quality but it made the rounds cruising the town. And for a couple of teens it got us in a lot of parties 🎉
I remember my brothers 72 dart, avocado green and the leaning tower of power. I was so impressed. Love these types of videos where you start with an easily affordable car and get it back on the road with tools most people have.
In 1972 my parents purchased a new Dodge Darts Swinger Special. It had a 225 CID slant six, a three on the tree, manual brakes, manual steering, and no A/C. The only thing it did have was an AM radio with a single dash speaker. It was the car I took my driving test in and that three point turn was a beast with manual steering. I had to use five points to turn, but I still passed!
Minor point, but brake shoes are not about momentum, but leverage. Assumimg a top anchor pin, the front shoe drives the rear into position during forward braking - rear shoe does most the braking, so it must have more surface. If the pin was on bottom [I think some pre war cars tried that], its the exact opposite: rear shoe drives the front, which would put the bigger shoe there.
We had a '72 Dart Swinger when I was a kid. I learned to drive in that car. It had a 318 V-8 so it was peppier than a slant 6. It was gold with a dark green vinyl top and had magnum 500 wheels...it was a pretty sharp looking car. I wish I still had it.
@@Pracaupodstaw Yep, that's why you gotta look outside the box for projects now, The HOT new build out here in Arizona are the Smog/Malaise Era cars from 73-85 because there plentiful and cheap often still running and driving for under a 3 grand. I daily drive a 73 Buick Regal that I bought for $1200 right after I got here and drove it home and then put another 5 k ish into, I just bought a 76 Cutlass for $2200 That I'm going to build into a weekend car.
@@TheREALOC1972 Interesting. It is an option. @@Pracaupodstaw it's just in Central Europe where's that's a problem, I have 8k ish in my Regal you can't even look at a roller of most older muscle cars for that and that's just the start, 8k and mine is done.....
I truly dreamed of finding this EXACT car for my dad. Same color and everything. He had one in high school. Sadly he passed last year. Now it would be in his memory.
I've had several Darts and B & E body Mopars, my first car being a 66' Dart. I wanted a 67 - 69 but couldn't afford one but found the 66'. It was wrecked but only cost me $75 back in 77'. fast forward and 5 Mopars later I just picked up a 69' with a running 440 with a lot of good upgrades. Can't wait to put it back on the road and cruise my local car scene.
About 2 weeks ago, I was given an '89 Gran Fury AHB. It was bought at auction, the guy drove it a little and parked it next to his '74 Gran Fury state car he also got at auction years before. The man retired, gave them to my buddy, who kept the '74. Both are all there & complete...
You go through it, order a big pallet of parts to get it back up running and have it driving safely. This is that important first step. I couldn't come up with the $1800 to buy a yellow 72 Swinger back in 1990. But I did get a white 1975 Fury with slant 6 for $250 that was sitting in a backyard.
That is one badass Dart, great transformation. I’d love to have that car, I’d leave the paint just the way it is. Never have to stress or worries about it; love it when they look like that.
9:03 For those watching-reuse the original locking ring whenever possible. They're a _much_ better fit than any aftermarket rings. That right lower control arm is a replacement.
My dad has a 1964 Dart GT that was his aunts car from new , 2 door 225 slant 6 Anniversary Edition . With a funky push button shifter and 3 speed auto .
I've got a 72 plymouth scamp that I had to drive around on a big gatorade bottle for a few weeks till I got the new gas tank. Luckily I lived close enough to base I could make a one way trip on one bottle.
That's the car my grandmother bought in 1972. I wanted her so much to give/sell it to me for when I would turn 16 but instead she exchanged it at the dealer for a Reliant K...
I like Tommy too but I've been a customer of Rock Auto for several years. My neighbor turned me onto them when I first moved to Florida in 2010. he was building a 96 S-10 and just about every part on that truck he got from Rock Auto, he was a parts guy at a GM Dealership for years though so he certainly knew what he was doing when it came to parts.
I agree with the "boring 350 Chevy" build but there's a reason people do them by the dozens, they made the 350 for 50 years and never really changed much, there's millions upon millions of them which means they are dirt cheap, the 350 gives you the best bang for your buck.
1974 was the first year they had the 360 in a Dart, Demon or Duster. I am pretty sure they never offered the 360 in the Swinger either , only in the Dart Sport which was the renamed Demon.
I was wondering about that also. My roommate bought the first 360 Duster straight off of the showroom floor. We would go street racing against the locals on the weekends. 😉
