    Big A taught me something that this clip reminded me of.
    "Too Big to Fail" - I think when people hear or use this, myself included, they think it means "It's so big, nothing will actually cause it to fail. They just make too much money that they're safe from problems."
    Big A taught me it's pretty much the opposite: They absolutely can "fail", and that's a huge problem. The government will swoop in, bail them out, and make sure it doesn't cause the economy to spiral out of control or crash.
    The brain is too big to fail in the human body not because nothing can harm it, but because it can get harmed and if it does severely enough, the whole body dies.
    It's interesting how often I hear people think it means the company is just immune from failing.

      Oh I thought most people knew what it meant after they saw the 2008 crash and learned how irresponsible the banks were being. They will fail time and time again but if the government just let them fail the entire economy would literally collapse, so the government is forced to play ball and bail them out every time. There's no risk for the banks

      Yeah “Too big to be allowed to fail” is maybe a more accurate statement. Although if any other person than Elon Musk made the same repeated awful financial choices, they would be mega bankrupt so maybe some people are also literally too rich to have money problems (although Elon is really trying to get there).

    My Ex’s brother worked for Cruise and the horror stories I heard about those cars made me never want to get in one. They train them by essentially simulating SF in a giant fake Unreal Engine world to pad the “driving hours”. He told me once that it basically took them 6 months to figure out roundabouts, and that he personally wouldn’t ride in one. On top of that they got caught providing data to the police so they could profile innocent citizens.

    The problem is suburbia and especially american suburbia. It requires way, *way* too much infrastructure per person and communities have nowhere near enough funding from taxes to maintain all roads. On top of that you have the issue that people in suburbia don't actually work there and drive to the city meaning those cities have to provide a big chunk of the infrastructure used by them but don't actually get taxes from them.

      the US is just too damn big, a lot of chinas population is along the east of the country and Japan’s cities are real close together so they can build those super trains easily. Here? They could do trains for the coasts but then that still leaves a lot uncovered, and prob would still get bankrupted by airlines, and obv our gov is not as organized as chinas either

    • @XMysticHerox
      @XMysticHerox Рік тому +6

      @@jjwang7597 Nope. It does not matter how big the country is overall. All that matters is how dense the population is. And even that is largely down to city planning decision not some inherent feature of a place. You say this in regards to China but it is just as true for the US.
      Most of the US is perfectly suited for trains. It was a very concious decision to build/bulldoze cities around cars. One that to this day is maintained by enforcing absolutely idiotic zoning laws among other things.
      Also trains outperform airlines at short to mid range and airlines are heavily subsidized in the first place. No they would not "bankrupt" them.

    • @NWbeats
      @NWbeats Рік тому

      @@jjwang7597most people just commute within their city or county. This is true world wide. Nobody commutes from San Francisco to New York City for work on a daily basis. Public transport is easily possible in all American cities. The politicians, the companies and homeowners are just against it. That's it. The US even invented trams. Public transport was always the default for American commuters. That only changed a couple decades ago.

    • @jjwang7597
      @jjwang7597 Рік тому

      @@NWbeats I don’t understand, we already have public transportation within cities though. You certainly could argue for it to be improved, but I don’t think the solution is a high speed train. Also you can’t really build high speed rail within a city because of the amount of stops and accessibility you would need it to have, which kinda defeats its whole purpose at that point. It really only would be feasible for between large cities, like how it is in china and Japan

    • @jjwang7597
      @jjwang7597 Рік тому

      @@XMysticHerox I think I was a bit unclear, I was referring to population density too lol when talkin about the size (I’m agreeing with you). The us is more spread out than china is and a train system would not be as efficient or useful here as (I think) it would be far too niche. For example, I live in Chicago and go to school in TX. I would love to take a train to school instead of a plane, but who the hell is ever gonna build a maglev train between Illinois and Texas? It’s all small towns and cornfields between, only like one or two major-ish cities, not very useful for many people. I talked about in my reply to the other guy why I don’t think you can build a high speed train within a city and would love to hear your opinion on that, maybe I’m wrong on that. However airlines have already bankrupted the passenger train industry once before in America, so it’s not like a crazy thing to say they would step up their game and do so again if threatened, especially since I feel like a train ticket would cost about the same as a plane ticket, and/or be faster by plane, so really thinking from a consumer’s perspective the only places I think you could do high speed trains for would be those awkward distances where it’s a bit too long of a car ride, but it’s too short and expensive to fly, which are pretty few and far between honestly.

  • @jjwang7597
    @jjwang7597 Рік тому +1

    I don’t really understand, what kind of infrastructure does Big A want here? Can someone explain it to me? He was prob joking about getting more roads, but if he wasn’t, I thought the whole point was to get rid of roads since we have too many? And then where does he want trains? Cities have buses and trains for internal travel alr, and there are already trains that go suburbs to city for commuters - you can’t really have a high speed train for either of these situations. You can’t really do long distances like coast to coast or across multiple states, we already saw how airlines drove those out of business and use.
    Really the only thing I could think of would be between cities right? but that would have to be between large cities in order to be useful and utilized fully, but then each state only really has like two or three major cities max where it would be reasonable to connect, with few exceptions like Cali, for example like San Fran to LA to cut down on traffic and save money from a flight. But those types of places are pretty few and far between, most of the country is much more spread out than that and often it would be cheaper to just drive a couple hours. Some of these cities already have some form of train or bus system connecting them, and there are a plethora of small towns and private property between that would have to be negotiated with or incorporated into a large centralized system, meaning more stops and slower travel, therefore less useful. (Also you know how we Americans act about our private property being taken by the government). At that point, you’re stuck in the awkward space between a road trip and a flight, and between them one or both is probably already faster, and/or cheaper, and/or more direct. Not to mention if you’re driving, once you get out of the cities there are plenty of highways and usually not a lot of traffic on the roads.
    TLDR: So even if we did get high speed trains here, I feel like they would just be a waste of money - underused, niche, and only connecting a very few select places.
    Now don’t get me wrong, I know we do got infrastructure problems, and roads and stuff often aren’t well kept and could be faster - I commute an hour and a half to work downtown everyday - but as cool as it would be unfortunately I don’t think the solution is a maglev train network. However I may be wrong, someone tell me if I’m missing something here, would love to understand. Sorry for the essay lol.

      not really actually. High speed rail has some good advantages like not requiring the time waste that comes with air travel. From entering the Airport to taking off can take hours and from lading to you exiting the airport will again take up time. For short flights (1 - 2 hours) the actual process of flying takes up so much time that a high speed train can be faster and more comfortable (because your not standing around all day in a an airport).

      Trains are so much better, you can get off in the middle of the city center instead of 20 kilometers outside because of all the noise the airport makes making locating it centrally impossible, not having to get to the airport 1-2 hours before departure but 10 minutes at most, boarding and unboarding takes a few minutes instead of half an hour.
      When you have high-speed trains going 300-400km/h you end up going much faster than an airplane just because everything outside of the actual travel is so much faster. The fact that "Business class" comfort is basically the default, that it's insanely quiet, to the point you can easily sleep on the train, has much less vibrations, and that you can sleep in an actual bed on loads of routes, many, many more than on an airplane, and much more comfortably too.
      On top of that you can have stops in many more different locations too if you want to. So even if your destination is not in one of the big cities you can still take a direct train there.
      They can also even have full-on restaurants on board that serve much better food than an airplane, the toilets are bigger and often nicer as well, plus more numerous.
      You also don't need to pay for extra baggage, don't need to be searched and you're not restricted in what you can bring in the same way. You also don't need to wait for your baggage to be delivered after arriving like on an airplane.
      There are also often many more departures, so if you miss a train you don't need to wait long, they can sometimes go so often you don't even need to book a ticket, you can just get on the first best one available.
      These are just some of the benefits but there are many more as well! :D
      Wish you a great day by the way!
