Jeep JK Axle U-Joint Inspection & Replacement

- The U-Joints in my 2012 Wrangler JKU were binding on the street and popping while in 4WD. After some digging and diagnostics, the axle U-Joints were the source of the noise. This video also explains how to determine if you have the 5-760x or 5-7166x U-joints in your JK Dana 30 axle.
Changing the diff oil after servicing the axles is always a good idea, so any contaminants that were in the axle tubes that got pushed into the diff get flushed out.

Thank you for taking the time to show this process in such great detail. Videos like yours are indispensable
Thank you. It’s a tricky balance between video length and capturing the challenges and various solutions based on tools on hand.
An old man helped me do brake drums in my first truck, a 78 C10.
"One day your hands will hurt from the time you wake till the time you sleep. Please stop hitting tools with your palms".
It's cool, do it how you like, just trying to make our wrenching days last as long as we can 🤘
Dead blow hammer for the win.
Very true. Worst part, I have like 4 dead bow hammers laying around.
very helpful and informative.....will use immediatley as my u joint destroyed hub bearing and bent caliper bracket,,,,,your video is just what people need,,,,simple straightforward advice and examples....thanks a million
Well done. Great editing and very informative. Thanks for the explanation about the mid-year change in 2012 and the measurements. Just what I needed and couldn't find anywhere else.
Took me some digging to find it. Glad to hear its helping others.
Nice video you did a good job hitting all the specifics. I would just add/recomend to grease the inner axle spline on the endas it helps not tearing the seal. The long side is a pitas to keep level. One other item would be use anti seize liberally on the bolts/unit bearing especially if in the rust belt. You will thank yourself later👍
Thanks for the feedback and tips. Anti seize is a must around here.
Great video, thanks! I like how dirty your Jeep is, so many videos have unreasonably clean Jeeps...
Thanks! Half the fun is using them. :)
I would like to see it done on a rusty Jeep.
Which part? I’ve done this a few times now, and usually removing the unit bearing is the biggest headache.
Great step by step description of the job. You make it look so easy. Well done Eric.
Very informative and detailed!🤙
very helpful. hopefuly ill get mine done tomorroe 😬
Great video
Information is helpful
Good video ill be checking mine axel shaft i been getting some knocks on when i turn to the left on my driver side and have not been able to see what it is . Now i have an idea or it could be thanks man.
Thank you and good luck finding the source of your noise.
were the new uni joints sealed type and if so did you add more grease into the caps ?
Yes, these are sealed units. Some people add some, I didn’t remove much so didn’t add any.
Mine pops like that but only in 4x4
What did you do after pulling out the guide pin? Did you put it back into the axle or put it onto the groves shaft?
Approx where in the video? Not sure what guide pin you’re referencing.
@@EricCantinsorry my bad, the part where you said you hit a snag. Guide sleeve
Ahh yes, axle guide sleeves. I hope input them back on the axle. Helps center the axle into the inner seal.
10:52 Careful mate you almost hit me!
Sorry! Hope you moved in time!
Everything you say sounds like a question?
