- Threading The Dark Knight as part of a worldwide Roadshow. We were one of 6 or 7 in the world showing all the three on IMAX 15/70mm Film. I have ran these before upon the initial release except for Begins. I never ran Begins on IMAX, only 35mm. #70mmfilm #darkknighttrilogyimax70mm
I used to be an Imax projectionist years back and it becomes routine but what used to get the adrenaline running was running two projectors in sync when showing a 3D film in 70mm. Sometimes, you'd get drift resulting in a visual echo, that's if the computer running Windows NT got a glitch and then you'd have to stop the show and resync both projectors AND sound which was a bitch of a job because the clock is running. If the next show runs late as a result, all the others will so sometimes you just had to cancel that show.
The projectors used 7k xenon lamps and you had to wear full protective gear to change the lamp as they were very volatile if still hot. One guy in France lost his face when the lamp exploded, I heard.
To get the projectionist job in an Imax theatre, we preferred no experience to hiring a 35mm projectionist as they could be set with bad habits. It was a great job. Imax film is the only film that runs horizontally through the projector and each frame is momentarily static against the aperture. That hissing sound is the air used to suck the loop of film against the glass when it meets the aperture.
Because Imax film pays out from the centre of the circular hub, the worst nightmare was seeing it spiral down to the floor overnight when you came in in the morning as we used to stick the tail with tape.
Our Imax theatre was a circular dome screen, not that common but it closed about 18 years ago. Great while it lasted, though.
That's really cool. I ran 3D too back in the day, but with the GT projector. Alot of work. Before IMAX I was 35mm projectionist and then I was good friends with the district trainer so he aloud me the opportunity to learn IMAX. The training was very grueling. Lots of practice. Took me a couple of weeks to get it, but a couple of years to master it. Now I am really comfortable with IMAX and very nervous around 35mm because all 35mm is archival and can easily be overlooked because of size when threading up.
Chris Hewitt. What bad habits would 35 mm projectionists have? I was one and it has sure changed since all went digital. The job can now be done by a chimpansee who has been taught to use a smartphone.
Cool story. Three panel Cinerama in the 1950's had a fourth 35 mm projector standing by to show a special reel on the center panel just in case there was a film break in one of three projectors. They would play the special reel to keep the audience entertained while they fixed the problem.
Who in the world laid awake all nite dreaming up this system??? Awsome👏👏👏
I am sitting here thinking the same thing; this is glorious to behold!
Certainly impressive, but just from a purely factual point of view - this system design is built upon all the work done by many different individuals designing film movie cameras since the concept was initially conceived over a hundred years ago. So many different individuals would have contributed the incremental developments along the way with their film movie camera designs and i would say this is just a combination of all of those individuals' work but in a larger format.
@@terencem9962 Built on the shoulders of giants...
The only real genius part of it is the rolling loop film transport mechanism in the projector. That's specific to IMAX. Everything else is basically the same as what's used for 35mm, just scaled way up. This model shows how the rolling loop system works: ua-cam.com/video/2-0UfkV96ZA/v-deo.html
That is crazy how big the reels are
@Mauler Tiberium Aren't you a bag full of positivity?
Mauler Tiberium idiots are usually larger than 70mm.
@Mauler Tiberium What a beautiful ray of sun shine you are.

I would LOVE to buy one of these imax films. Not anything fun like starwars but just for the fact that I own a 400lbs roll of 70mm film.
I know you can spend ~$10 bucks or even hundreds for a single frame clipping of an Imax movie (like interstellar) from Ebay, lol. Not sure where to get ahold of a full reel (not to mention the cost)
Braeden Roesler A full print like Interstellar has a cost of about $80,000
IIRC, a print of Oppenheimer runs about $40k.
Holy shit! They still do screening of Dark knight trilogy?????? I am living in the wrong place.
It was a special trilogy event that showed all 3 in order. Happened a few months ago. I saw it in indianapolis

Damn what a film. This is the first time I’ve actually seen the size of 70mm film stock and it’s freakin beautiful
I work with Fiber Optics and the casual way this guy handles film terrifies me like my first day handling fiber.
TheKingInBlue I don't think he's actually touching any part of the film that will be used. It looks likes its just extra film material so it can be fed throughout the machine.
@@hotfiyah exactly like that - he said he searching for starting frame - since than movie actually starts ;))) anything else is excessive celluloid for fedding the machine
I know that it is excess film, except where he's putting his hand on the side of the reel. My mind was anticipating a tear in the film because it doesn't seem like he should be able to do what he is doing (though clearly he is).
We surely can never deny that The Dark Knight is the best superhero movies of all time?
The soundtrack of this movie is awesome if there theater is equipped with surround sound. Imax makes all better. What an experience.
IMAX must be preserved. It's an important part of film exhibition history.
Wow, what a beast of a projector! So cool to get to see how things work behind the scenes.
that's beautiful IMAX 15/70! awesome!
@5:55 I'll edit everything.
Ha. Betcha won't.
It’s very interesting how this equipment is built to last and be serviced. Amazing engineering. This projection rooms vibe Reminds me of childhood when my uncle would rent movies and we’d watch them on an big old tv. Or when I went to see my first imax movie.
When I was in high school we toured a new imax theater for my video class, everything was film. 10 years later, almost no theaters are still film. Considering it looks the same, I understand why. But that man has a talent for something that is a lost art.
my local cinema switched over to all 4k digital projectors. it doesnt look the same. i can see the pixels. it also seems to make them lazier because when the place opened they didnt even have the chromatic abberation calibrated properly and they all looks terrible.
Its not same.film has more dynamic range and rich color than digital
When I went to see Oppenheimer in 70mm, the range of a difference was clear to me. While yes digital is cheaper to run for movie theaters, film is where you find the places that care about their presentation. I watched it in digital and while an impressive film, I thought the practical effects looked awful and nothing special. In 70mm, you saw the entire color to it. The shaded blacks and the bleeding oranges in the nuke was something special.
Film needs to come back. Digital is ruining films and the viewer experience watching them as it's cheaper and lazier to show. They need to get people in there who care about films to get these things right.
Second video of yours I've seen, and I love it. It's so freaking awesome to see everything that you have to do to prepare for a film.. Just awesome!
That's an incredible amount of work. I saw The Dark Knight Trilogy IMAX roadshow a few months ago at AMC Lowes Lincoln Center 13 in NYC. That experience reminds me why I love going out to the movies. Thank you for this bts video. It's eye opening.
No problem
Yeah Lincoln Square is a nice IMAX. That and New Rochelle and Palisades were the best IMAX theaters to go to back when Dark Knight Sequels came out. I ran Dark Knight IMAX at new Roc in July 08. Was a massive movie.

Awesome stuff! 👍🏻🎞
Really wonder and amazing which is known clearly now only as many people also do not know on IMAX film projection.
Wish you guys could come down to CA and show the dark knight, as a younger audience member I've only got to catch one showing in my life in 1570 and I'm just killing to see more, and collect film strips

I always thought all IMAX are digital for some reason.
Hell, it's almost 2020, everything ought to be digital and wireless.
I'm just glad there's still film rolling around.
IMAX started going digital on a large scale starting in 2009, 2011 you saw the already film IMAX theaters convert to digital and 2015 it went digital on a full global scale. There are only a handful of film IMAX theaters left, but all are museums or aquariums.after the digital switch, Nolan has been shooting, distributing and exhibiting his movies on as many IMAX film available theaters. The more films he has made in post digital have decreased the amount of theaters that will run film.
So far, IMAX is a film format only. IMAX film has a resolution of about 12K-18K, and digital needs to match that or at least get close (and by close, I mean 8K minimum) to truly be considered IMAX. So far, cinema projection doesn't go above 4K, so there is no such thing as digital IMAX yet. Any theater bearing the IMAX name and using digital projection is a scam, commonly known as LIEmax.
Awesome

Hi! Is there any list of this rare commercial cinemas with analog IMAX projectors that are still showing actual movies like the new James Bond od the new AVATAR movie next year? I'd love to visit one of those!
I do not know but I am assuming none. There are commercial theaters that do run IMAX film for Nolan movies but for anything else now days it's all digital.
@@the80sdiehard Well, if this is true, I really regret this because there are several movies shot partially or entirely with IMAX cameras on 70mm film, not just Nolan films. I really can not imagine that any digital media data rate can transport the imense amount of an IMAX film. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_IMAX_films
@@marekriebmann1495 ita strange. They shot plenty of big films with IMAX 70mm but it's always very little amount in those films. In the past few years some of them have had actual Film releases, but very small. Nolan is the only one to get serious pull and have in his contract up to 50 plus Film Sites for his stuff. It is super expensive to maintain and hire people to run it. Let alone shooting, developing and distribute it. The only IMAX film releases that IMAX will hire and contract for are always Nolan.
Just ordering the camera guy around lol.
While ordinary cinemas have gone from projector to BluRay, IMAX said "fuck it! Go big or go home!" and made a projector bigger than my living room.

An incredible film, even when not seen in IMAX.
I wish i was there.. im a total nerd and watching this is almost better than the movie.. almost :)
is this the definition of convoluted
Most of the what makes it convoluted it is the machine trying to give the right amount of tension to the reel.
I'd love to see just how these reels are produced. Like i understand you shoot on film etc when you can on set (I'd imagine) but how do they expose the films with all the added CGI???
Also, stay broke shoot film!
Films shot to IMAX film in camera need scanning, a digital intermediate making, CGI adding then a print made from that. I'd love to see an IMAX print being made, even though I know it's fundamentally the same as any other film print.
Sadly many films in 4K don't have 4K-native DIs or 4K CGI, they're upscaled with film grain sometimes added. A few Blu-ray review sites have details of the resolutions of intermediates and final prints. I'd hope films intended for IMAX have suitably high resolution CGI resolutions.
How do you get the projectionist gig? do you have to be a certified projection operator?
Is a mistery
The prints that ran on that left platter tree with the orange rollers fed from the inside out, like traditional film platters? I noticed in the other video the prints on the right platter tree fed from the outside in. Did certain types of releases have to play from the right? Was the left for more traditional Hollywood releases?
The musclecar of projectors.
The analog form.

Planning for Dune 2020. Denis Villeneuve mentioned he would like to screen in IMAX and 3D. Closest location for me is Regal New Roc. If he doesn't shoot the entire film in IMAX, but still screens it in IMAX will we get that jarring experience when shots go from 35mm widescreen to full screen. Even if some scenes are shot with an IMAX camera, what venue would you recommend. Not in any way an expert, so if I have my terminology wrong, please don't be afraid to correct me.
I use to work at New Roc. I was one of the IMAX Projectionists there from 07 to 2014. I ran film there consistently until 2011. We went digital at that time so i only ran Nolan features on Film. I am not sure about Dune, but i imagine it will be shot with IMAX 3D Digital. The IMAX Digital is almost like IMAX 15/70MM, Digital IMAX does look great, but i still prefer the film because it feels and looks more alive. Nolan is the only one who does the film and 3D Film would be super expensive to set up in IMAX

Why is the machine as wide as the room?
How is the film moved to the projector room? The storehouse must be huge and the reels look too heavy for a single person to lift. Are they moved by mechanical means, forklift, or threaded through a chute to the projector room?
The film is built onsite from separate reels into one big one when it's delivered new, as to how they transport it afterwards as this film in the video is archival I haven't a clue.
looks like a cool job
Plug a thumbdrive into my tv..done!
I'm kind of disappointed that the video was not recorded using film.
Yeah, UA-cam should have a home projection service where they come to your place and project the videos you want to watch.
Wow... I had no idea how big these reels are.
What's the average weight of one of these ... and how are they shipped, loaded and moved around the projection booth?
500-800 pounds, and they're moved with small forklifts, similar to pallet jacks.
Ok how about a video of bringing the film in and placing it on that spool table.
It not that bad, a good condition quality build up table does most of the work. I'm curious if he has ever brain wrapped or thrown a imax print before. That is where it gets interesting, it separates the pro from the rest. I enjoyed projection work, too bad these jobs are almost gone.
Where does the audio track come from? Is it on the film, or separate?
It's separate synchronized with the film. Thats why it's so important to have the start frame i guess
Doug's Welding & Fabrication I’ve heard that’s imbedded onto the film strip on the outer side. A person who run a projection told me. If you google sound on film reel, you’ll be able to see a picture of it.
@@rocomedyisawesome with IMAX the case is different. Since it's a 70mm reel, there is no space for the sound. So you have a separate audio track running that has to be synced with the film.
