Thanks for all the comments on the this and all the other episodes. Was able to read through over the weekend. Will try to continue to approve the series. Sorry for all the mistakes. I do not have a transcript, just a structure for the talk in my notebook. We do the lecture in one take, no revision or major editing…well, except for the first take in the first episode, which my team thought was funny and necessary to rub in =). I think stating Finland and Sweden's NATO memberships as eventualities is a bit presumptious. It's certainly more likely than not that they join, but I think you being part of the pre-Ukraine 20% shines through here.

He is talking about himself - again who did he refer to as "we" - the west? The anglo? Putin's military action aim at removing the threat, neutralize the hostility inside Ukraine against Russia mainly due to the West ignoring Russia's legitimate security concern. Russia called the west "partner" the US designate Russia as adversary , enemy no. 1.
That's total nonsense; they come up with a theory that's suits them.

I'd like him to create an update to this Series:-
Russia is NOT isolated and it hasn't been killed economically. In fact is mobilising to extend further into Ukraine.
We also know that this is definitely a PROXY war with ALL of NATO against Russia (except Turkey). Ukraine became the blunt instrument with which to bash Russia but Ukraine wasn't taken into EU or NATO. Why not?
We also see that the rest of the world does NOT support NATO and believe West fomented this war.
Russia has literally taken over vast swathes of land into its fold through the Referenda. So far only those lands that are "Russian speakers".
That's a lot of change.

@Sata Waronen From a position of relative ignorance of his governance, I'm kinda jealous because here in Italy, we managed to kick out Draghi in no time in order to elect a far worse candidate in Giorgia Meloni (Conte was even worse). Their grasp of English is abysmal and their policies even worse. Few of them are really articulate and are an unfortunate reflection of our political system. No wonder many young people here migrate to northern countries for work opportunities.

Thanks for the very clear explaination of the conflict. I do agree with most of you've said. My only problem is with your 15:15 statement that in the short term, Russia will be isolated by the "world". I think it is better to say by "the US, the UK, the EU + Japan, South Korea and Australia". Why? Simply because we do'nt see heavy condemnation from China (~1.5B), India (~1.5B), Brazil, South America, Arab world, Africa...
The world is divided into G7 vs. the rest, 1.6 billion vs. 6 billion.
Technically, you are right. However, the important point is how much strategically important are the International relations between Russia and the countries you mentioned. What counts in this case is not the sheer number of citizens of the country Russia (or anyone else, for that matter) has good diplomatic relations with. What count are factor such as: the import/export balance, the geographic position, the possibility to establish and exploit a military alliance, the size of their army and so on. In this sense, you can say that being not isolated from south America and from Africa is not so relevant.
Arabic Gulf nations, India and China are a different matter: they are key actors, altough quite divided and different in agendas and strategies.
Point is, Russia was "doing well" for its interests: stable commercial relationship with EU, North stream 2 was on its way while TAP (south stream gas from Azerbaijan) was a small project and Gazprom lobbying was successful in limiting it. Russia had strong influence on the fastly-growing nationalist EU parties and was hampering the build-up of a common EU strategy. Meanwhile, US was gradually shifting its interests from Atlantic to Pacific (US issue for this century will be to contain China).
It Is quite difficult to understand the Putin's move from a rational point of view. I can understand it only through the point of view of a paranoid.
The average Russian Boris and Natasha, who have tasted freedom or just smelled it, want Iphone, Ikea table or bed, Nike or HM joggings, adidas shoes, French and Italien cosmetics or bags.
I was surprised to see, how despite, what is happening to 4 million refugee, the so called brothers and sisters from Ukraine, the younger people seemed to regret the loss of American Burgers more. And I don't see them wanting to travel as first choice to China. No this isolation from this part of the world is more important than one may think.

@@jt7725 I am quite aware of what the older generation thinks, not only from media but from my close Russian friends. No single factor is important, but together many determine the trajectory. It is not only about discontent that this factor implies, but also the potential for national brain drain, national income from richer western tourism. Russia was never on my priority list for travel, but now even less and probably much more....

A good analysis.
I would also add that the Chechen wars belong in this analysis. Although Russia fell apart in 91 they were not willing to let Chechnya go because of its oil resources. The 1st Chechen war is surprisingly similar. The Russians just went into Grozny in straight armored columns (with no infantry support)
intending to take the presidential palace. They never made it. The Chechens organized in small groups of 50 attacked the lead and tail vehicles with antitank weapons and then proceeded to methodically destroy the rest. Out of 26 tanks only 6 made it and out of 120 MBPs only 20 survived. The Russians were completely wiped out. It was a total shock.
The Russians then reacted by slowly surrounding Grozny and pounded it with artillery into rubble. The Chechens pulled back into the hills.
Then the Russians had a city of rubble to occupy and slowly started going after other towns and the Chechen rebels. But this was a very slow slog.
18 months later the Chechens came down from the hills and surrounded the Russians and basically destroyed them, they had to sue for peace and get out of there.
It was obviously more than that, Dudayev organized a terror occupation of a hospital to get a ceasefire and there was also internal fighting among the Chechens.
Then there was the rise of Putin in 99 and a series of Moscow apt bombings. A third building the police came in and found an unexploded hexogen bomb and caught 3 men who turned out to be FSB agents. The official explanation was that it was a "training exercise" . But it really looks like it was a false flag to blame the Chechens and start another war. (The Chechens never admitted responsibility for the apt bombings). They did some really nasty stuff though like the Moscow Theatre terror attack, the 3 planes with suicide bombers that came down, and the Beslan school attack. This and the fact that they considered it a muslim jihad did not get them much sympathy in the west.
But also Chechnya was a small country of a million or so and no international borders with friendly states. They had no airforce either.
The 2nd war lasted another 9 years and ended with the Kadyrov puppet regime passed on to son Kadyrov. There is opposition now but they are not large enough to
do anything.
A second point. Democratic contagion.
As Anne Applebaum (and Fiona Hill) both state. Putin is really threatened with the colour revolutions and the Maidan 2014 revolution. He was in Berlin in the KGB buidling burning documents while crowds were demonstrating in 89. Those former communist countries in the bloc fell in reverse domino theory and mostly non-violent revolutions except Romania and then Yugoslavia.
There were some demonstrations even in Russia after the 2012 elections, which Putin blamed on the US (as if they actually had that ability) and of course the recent Belorussian and Kazakhstan demonstrations, which were more or less put down with Russian troops coming in to prop them up.
These are perceived as a real threat to Putin and why he has to try to stamp them out. But I agree it backfired spectacularly.
And Prof. Stub is absolutely right. This is a global conflict and will affect the world order. Even Fiona Hill states we are in kind of ww3 right now.

Good post. Blair overlooked the Russian war crimes in Chechnya because he wanted to secure BP drilling rights there. And so of course nobody was told to care about them and they certainly didn’t get any help in terms of weapons etc from the west

UA was ranked 6th in Europe (only after UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain, in that order) according to Global Firepower and 11th arms exporter in the World (thus strong military-industrial complex) according to Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. UA ground forces had cca3000 MBTs, cca2500 IFVs, another cca3500 armoured vehicles. Artillery included 500+ MLRSs, 1200+ selfpropelled artillery and 2200+ towed artillery. Air defence was organized in 4 air defence missile brigades and 7 (11 according to some sources) independent air defence missile regiments with 250 S-300PT/PS/V1 SAMs, 72 9K37 Buk SAMs, 100 9K330 Tor SAMs, 125 9K33 OSA-AKM SAMs, 150+ 9K35 Strela-10 SAMs, 70 2K22 Tunguska SPAAGMs, 300+ ZSU-23-4 Shilka SPAAGs and hundreds of S-2/S-3 Strela, Igla, Piorun and Stinger MANPADS. UA Air Force had 145-188 modern combat aircrafts including 37-70 Mig-29s and 32 Su-27s fighter jets, 12 Su-24s and 17 Su-25s attack jets and 47 L-39s light attack/trainer jets. What happened?.

Excellent if you like a bias opinion with a false choice of peace versus justice. Nobody is demanding justice. This is how he is trying to frame the debate. The truth is that Justice will happen if and when, there is peace. Peace will happen when the country who is perpetrating this genocide is stopped, not before. They won't stop themselves, because that is not what fascist regimes do. Are we not able to learn anything from history? Bargaining away Ukraine's land for peace, makes as much sense as the concessions made to Hitler did, in world war 2. 60 million people ended out dying in that war, that didn't need to die, if only the West had stood up to Hitler. Russia is now rapidly losing it's credibility as a military power and as an arms supplier. Political consequences will follow.
Trust me he knows about it as does EVERY Finn about full scale war. That war was called Winter War. We fought againts Soviet Union who had THE BIGGEST army in the world and with population of 150 million againts Finlands 3.7 million. Winter war was supposed to last about 2 weeks and Finland was supposed to be a "gift" from the General of the soviet union army to Stalin for Stalin's birthday. 3.7 million with 40 tanks that are out dated hard by enemy tanks and no existing airforce. Saying that Ukraine would be leveled in just two weeks is absurd if you take out nuclear weapons out of the possibility because theres no way Russia would take over Ukraine in two weeks.

Thank you for posting these series. I am a Greek / French national who is working in the Middle East since 2009. Below a few comments on your statements, for your review;
1. “..The west being too naive..” Well, if any of the 2 parties herein this war (Russia/ West) was naive, that was Russia; constant NATO expansion in contrary to what was agreed since the USSR fall, which mislead Russia with false promises, most lately the Minsk Agreements which was the reason that made Putin to abandon further hopes of diplomacy about the same.
2. “..None of us believed that Russia would attack..” Please refer to comment #1.
3. “..What is putting trying to achieve..” Its simple, he and many of his speakers have stated it: Ukraine cannot join NATO or EU, and Russo-friendly Ukrainians should be considered equal citizens to the rest Ukrainians. Logical.
4. “..Stalin is seen by many Russians as a hero..” Your statement implies that he should not be considered as a hero, or am I wrong? Apologies if I missunderstood.
5. “..You could say that it happened during the Nazis (for Russia to have saved Europe)..” interesting how low key you are admitting that if it wasn’t for Russia, most probably Nazi Germany would have won. Perhaps even shame on you for your recognising that Russia suffered the most in that war, millions have died in the name of Freedom for the world against Nazi.. No other nation fought Fascism as much as Russia..
6. In regards to the “105 day war between Finland and - Russia: Arguably it is considered to have happened because Finland was greatly supporting Fascism, why don’t you mention that as well? Thus the Continuation War/ Finland and Nazi Germany again Soviet Union. Don’t try to re-write History please, what’s done is done.
7. There are not only three scenarios as outcomes, theres a fourth one: Ukraine being independent, neutral country, which does not prosecute russo friendly Ukrainians. Simple.
8. In your conclusion: i respectfully disagree because,
A) he wanted a neutral ukraine and to this day (december 2022) ukraine is not member of european union,
B) he never wanted a split europe, europe was his best client:) and
C) that transatlantic partnership that forces europe paying quadriple prices for gas from USA, stands to be judged.. it makes europe look like a fool paying for energy from USA when there is cheaper energy next door from Russia, so why would he wanted it otherwise?
9. Russia being isolated from the world.. yes, but please note an important detail: the world you are referring to is USA, Canada, UK, European Union, Japan, Australia. Thats 13% of the world population, and ~35 % of the world gdp. So.. “isolated by world” is far from accurate, dont you agree?
I would like to hear the same insight from the NATO perspective. What legacy, history and vision does NATO have?
From the Nato perspective, it's pretty straight forward. The US foreign policy is to prevent the creation of any regional power. Any regional power would have the ability to undermine the US dollar hegemony. The reason why China didn't do this before is because the RMB is not traded internationally but internally in China. For foreign transactions, the Chinese would use USD/EURO/pound sterling. As for undermining regional power, the best example is that of Libya. Gaddafi was suggesting the use of a pan-african gold back currency which is what prompted Hillary Clinton to unleash Nato on Libya. As for Nato, nato has deep connections with many fascist elements in the world. The US/Nato trained the Azov battalion. The US trained 'moderate' rebels in Syria which was a rebranding of Al-Qaeda. In Afghanistan, the US armed and trained the Muhajideen to fight the soviets. Basically, in a very round about way, the US trains many terrorists organizations across the world to wage their proxy wars to prevent the creation of regional powers.

However, NATO was built to protect western Europe against Soviet aggressions. After Stalin forced communism in Poland, Hungary, Eastern Germany, Czechoslovakia, Romania and Bulgaria, there was no other option than contain.

Thank you for your channel and your perspective of view. As a Ukrainian who watches/listens to lots of Russian media and is familiar with their narrative, I'd like only to clarify they don't want to defend Europe or Europeans. Russian propaganda made Russians feel they are living in a great country that always win (WW2, battle w Napoleon etc) and they proud of it very much.
On another side propaganda created a feeling there's a constant threat to their country from the West. Mainly from USA and NATO. The image of West Europe created by propaganda is something like countries with fallen morale and principles which Russians should avoid at any cost.
So, finally from one side, the Russians believe in the greatness of Russia (they percept it as something like a Russian Empire) but from another side, they believe all other West countries want to conquerer them (when the war started their propaganda even said few times that Ukraine would invade Russia if Russia didn't advance first). So most of Russians basically feel like a beleaguered castle and are happy that their country started the war

As a child in the '60's, some of my parents friends built large bomb shelters. My Dad did not, knowing a shelter in a city targeted with Soviet megaton level ICBMs would be futile. Starting perhaps with the Chechen war, this was incrementally eroded. Putin's ascension to power was a bad omen, as were Russia's repeated land grabs. But it was not until January, when intelligence said Russia's installation of field hospitals in Belarus were clear indicators that Putin intended a full scale invasion, that the possibility of a global war returned. ~Thirty years, and we're back to where we started. A sad state of affairs, indeed.

Yes, good idea to put things in perspective. Explain the promises to Russia, the Minsk agreement etc.
Minsk agreement stipulated that all illegally armed groups within Ukraine were to disarm and disband. This was never done, as Russia continued to support, arm, and supply those illegal groups (as well as occupy Ukrainian territory with Russian troops). While that continued the Minsk agreement could not be implemented.
No promises to Russia on future NATO membership were ever made. Because, naturally, Moscow does not dictate NATO policy.
Excellent presentation but i am not quite sure about the last bit, concluding that Putin has lost at everyone of his aims. For example iam not sure nato is as United as he claims or Russia is isolated from the world. He is not, just west and even that he is still trading.
Sanctions are only from most of NATO and absolutely dependent US allies. But not Hungary, Slovakia and not even France has asked it's corporations to leave.

I feel like Europe was considered stable with Russia causing small distortions not a tsunami against this stability.

Everybody says now that the war in Europe is happenning and it is hard to believe. But there was the war in Yugoslavia in the 90th. This war was also very brutal as any other war. Why people in Europe don't remember this war and the humanitarian crisis that it caused? Did we learn anything from that experience?

I have few questions:
1) Why did EU and USA persuade Ukraine to enter NATO in the first place when now it is crystal clear that there was actually no such plan? On the contrary, EU and USA are currently showing great interest to add Sweden and Finland into NATO and they want it to happen really fast. As countries West and Russia had inhibitions about their relationship. So I want to understand, what should have been the reaction of Russia to Ukraine being added to NATO?
2) Here is the follow up question. Imagining a scenario, if Russia was able to form a similar alliance with Mexico and Mexico decided to allow Russian military to operate a base and place nuclear missiles, what must have been the reaction of USA? We know the Cuban story although it was during cold war.
3) I want to understand if actually human right violations were carried out by Ukrain and Georgia on native russians in those countries? If yes, what was the reaction of the west?
4) I feel post Cold War, we are in a situation where the police, lawyer and judge are the very same. The West. So I was wondering in such a situation, who is going to condemn and punish/sanction the West for their attrocities (Iraq, libya, africa, afganistan)?

I love people that live in former European colonies complaining how the US/NATO is helping a country to stand on its own to be independent of its colonial boss. Maybe we should have held onto the belief that people can't pick their own government. Imperial Russia/USSR was no different than the British Empire it should be dissolved and people of those regions should be able to govern themselves. Although this point of view might be appealing, I wonder, and I say this as a life-long pro-America, where is the heavy hand of the US into Ukraine, pushing things to the extreme between the existing, and not insignificant, neonazi forces. Altogether, it seems to me a far too partisan opinion; rational, logical, but without some fundamental elements that explain the full picture of what has happened and why we are now at this point.

I have listened to your last video first and then this one. my views are very basic and from a perspective of being a citizen of a country. My views have not changed at all since the begining, was always hoping the leader of the country that is being destroyed and generation of humans being traumatised would put his people first and surrender at the begining to protect his young country and its gains made so far. funny enough my views have not change 4 months later... those who stand to loose the most must make that sacrifice. my predictions is that it wont stop until they give up, by then a country would be finished and with hindsight they will learn that they should have surrendered to protected civilians instead of being a proxy. It would have been more heroic than the current sutuatuion and trauma. after all ukraine is the origin of russia and these civilians are relatives... it is so sad and everyday we pray for peace to return...sometimes things are not as complicated as they seem but i guess egos rule at the top...it not about the people or civilians at all.
But you are missing one of the main points of this conflict, which is the expansion of NATO to the East and Ukraine to remain neutral (because of the obvious threat for their national security)….without these elements included in the analysis, the arguments you are giving doesn’t take into consideration the real causes of the problem.….. (let’s frame all of these as “allegedly” or a bunch of preconcepted theories…but if we don’t want to give up those theories, a debate couldn’t take place in a honest and open way, cause no one is gonna listen to the Other, because al ready has its own conclusions……of course if the intención to try “to understand” this complex scenario, and not only remain in the past, but, starting from this understanding, to find ways to solve this, in order to be able to move into the future).

Yeah, you could say Russia helped save Europe from the Nazis. Because they did. Russia lost tens of millions of their own solders and civilians in the fighting.
Actually, far more Ukranians fought against the Nazis and died to save Europe than Russians in WW2. The Ukranians know the horror of Nazism more closely. Old people in Ukraine remember.

No, Russians didn't merely help save;they SAVED Europe from Nazi Germany, period. The mere skirmishes in the west of Europe couldn't have so much as scathed the German war machine,let alone stop it, if the Red army did not decisively defeat the third Reich in Eastern Europe.
I know this is months ago, but the assumed isolation of Russia is merely on the "Regional Perspective"....Russia is not isolated in the Global arena, it pivots itself more towards the East (Asia)... Europe is isolating itself.
