Great video! It touches on a couple of really important topics.
As the owner of a Dutch Shepherd, you can only do so much to make a Dutch Shepherd not act like a Dutch Shepherd.
Obviously some suppression is necessary, and Beckman does it well!
But this video is also a reminder to potential owners considering super high energy working dogs such as these.
How much time are you willing to spend suppressing what the dog naturally is?
And is it fair to the dog?
Dutch shepherds typically are not "dog park dogs", and this is a great video to remind people to pick a breed that is best suited to their lifestyle. I like how Beckman asked the owners what they want their life to look like with this animal.
Thank you for a video that demonstrates teaching some necessary suppression, but also serves as a reminder to people to be careful what breeds they pick...

@june song not sure how he thinks that would be shaming? (I'd rather hurt somebody's feelings, then have a dog wind up with the wrong owner, become unmanageable and get dumped at a pound... But those that know me would not describe me as politically correct! )
My dutch is a 2 year old intact male. I will tell you that they are not for everybody. And that's okay.
      Dog parks??? Nope.
I've had people ask if my dog could be a stud for their females (gsds). Another Nope.
Frankly, I don't personally know anyone that I would trust to handle the offspring of my boy... 😂
The difficulty will be finding playmates for the dog featured in this video. Frankly most dogs just can't handle the rough play and yes they do like the rough stuff.
You had better be supremely confident in your ability to control them.
Glad these people are getting some help... Too many don't. But still I hope it makes people think twice before getting a Dutch Shepherd or a Belgian Malinois or even a German Shepherd.

I have a large female Dutchie and have worked with Malinois males in the past. The males, especially the unneutered ones are relentless and need a strong leader. They will walk all over an owner and they don't do well if they don't have a firm confident leader. Unless your breeding, these dogs can be unmanageable if unneutered. I had no issues with my Dutchie, but I socialized the heck out of her and spend a minimum of an hour per day training. Lazy owners almost always screw up these powerful dogs. Don't get one if that's you, sorry. Actually the Doberman is a far calmer dog and is more suited to being alone than either the Mal or Dutchie, but if you raise them right and have the time for them there is no better dog for family protection and even just as a pet. They are very affectionate and are mostly goofballs, but will protect you with their lives. You just have to know what you are doing before you decide, oh I want to get a cool dog like the ones from John Wick 3. Then you wonder why you need new furniture every couple months.

It took me 1 year of intense training to be able to walk him without a leash, but even now (after 4 years) I would not be able to have him ignore or play with dogs like prince in the dog park. On the street, he would be able to sit down while prince walks by, but in the dog park... just not possible. He is now still crazy and dominant, but very obedient on the other hand. I whish you share some wisdom, how to handle dogs like this with other large (dominant) males in a closed / limited places. P.S. My dog is nurtured, but that didnt changed his behavior much. And when it comes to nature, yes, he can hike full day, without a problem, but wildlife is big problem. I already had issues with him and roe deer... so that is one more thing I would like to see on the channel, how to deal and train your dogs vs wildlife.

He goes out on off leash pack hikes twice a week and does great in the pack. But one on one dog meets is random who he growls at . He has good obedience, however off leash out in nature he can be easily distracted. The best reassurance for his safety is the E Collar, it’s like a wireless leash. It’s really helping with his shaping off leash. Hope that helps.🐶💞

If that had been a full-grown male Dutch Shepherd the picture could have been very different. I saw someone use the word "relentless" and that's a very good description of a Dutch Shepherd's approach. Their energy levels are simply off the chart and they will keep up whatever they are doing at maximum speed, at maxiumum power, at maximum EVERYTHING. There's no off switch unless they get rigorous training to teach them boundaries. They are, as far as I am concerned, the most intelligent breed on the planet. You can look into their eyes and you SEE their brain at work, evaluating, assessing. On Dutch farms they were trained to bring in sheep and cattle at night, on their own, without human supervision. As if they have some kind of internal clock, "OK, it's 5 o'clock, time to take the animals home," and they'd go to work. They are also distinctive for being one of the oldest unchanged breeds around. The Dutchie you see today looks exactly like the Dutch Shepherds guarding Dutch farms 200 years ago.

You see people taking dogs with this type of attitude to the dog park all the time. These people realize their dog needs training and socializing before that can happen. Unfortunately many people are clueless and just let them off leash at the park and that's when fights happen.

I need a Prince to train my mini-Schnauzer :( - I can’t go to a dog park nor walk with him on the street as he becomes possessed when he sees other dogs (as well as people) passing by but mostly aggressive with other dogs (he’d try to snap/bite if he gets close enough). I have been looking for a “Prince” to put him in his place, I think that’s what he needs; to learn boundaries.

I had a blue heeler and he was the most perfectly behaved dog. Not saying that I had to invest a whole ton of time, love, and discipline to get him there. But I will never own another dog because he was literally my best friend. He kept me warm where I would've assuredly froze to death. He went with me everywhere I went and was a part of me. I love you Rascal and I miss you still all the time.

Dutch shepherd are the hardest dog I’ve had when coming incounter with Random dogs,
They are okay with dogs they have been around for a little bit,
But random dog that come to her on walks, the ones that come to her when she doesn’t want to normal shows them quickly
Always have there aggression hidden around family but if come to it they flip, but very protective over there loved ones

I don’t think it’s really worth it to try to socialize a dog like this with other dogs. It’s seems to be the way many Dutch shepherds are to be dominant like this. Better to teach obedience and recall around other dogs. The dog doesn’t need to interact with other dogs but learn to confidently be around other dogs without incident and trust you to handle things.

perfect example of a dog who is dominant and rude due to excitement and lack of socialization, but not necessarily aggressive. just didnt have mom or another dog to teach him manners when he was a pup lol.

I don’t understand why people won’t neuter their dogs! We don’t apply the same morality to dogs as to humans, but so many people have a problem neutering their dog like it is somehow diminishing the dog to remove their bits. That’s applying human thinking to a dog and it just causes trouble for everyone. Only well adjusted dogs who do not display aggression can keep their bits, and that is a minority of dogs. Prince is a special boy who has repeatedly shown he is in control of himself, that’s why he can keep his. Most dogs however cannot and should not.

This is why I love to take my dog to my work sometimes. She is a Johnson's Classic American Bulldog and she loves to use her nose. I work in a hardware store, so smells galore lol. I let her sniff the fertilizers, bird seed, grass seed, soil, animal feed/bedding. Pretty much anything she wants to put her nose on is fair game. It gives her something different to do and wears her out the way a walk cannot.

My doberman acts just like this pup when it comes to etiquette with other dogs. He just wants to play but he’s TOO much and being unneutered male this means possible dog fights. This video (and all your videos) are SO helpful and have made such a difference when I plateaued in my obedience training with my dobie. I’m so excited to start using this method bc I know it’ll make a difference with him.

I currently have my dog in training and I am learning a lot about him being unbalanced with other dogs. Prince is giving corrections, hard but GOOD corrections. There is no locked jaw and he isnt licking his lips as a sign of aggression. The other dog has his tail straight up and looks like he has a mohawk on his back constantly testing his limits because he is used to not being corrected. The excessive tail wagging tells he is not balanced. He likes the girl but he his not following his boundaries with her

Exactly what to do. Dogs get into it, we intervene to not allow it to escalate and continue to let them do their thing. So many owners would of made that situation worse
Great video Joel as usual. Honest to goodness feedback and real life training.
