How to Cut Dovetails by Hand

- Thank you Woodcraft for your support! www.woodcraft.com
I love teaching people to cut dovetails because, contrary to what seems to be popular belief on the internet, they are not really all that hard. With some basic instruction, nine fairly basic tools, and an afternoon in the shop, I’m pretty confident anyone can cut a perfectly functional set. It may not be the prettiest set, but, in antiquity, dovetails were actually invented because hand-forged nails were the only option at the time, and were too expensive to produce.
If you go to an antique store and look inside the drawers of old furniture, chances are the dovetails you see are not going to be all that pretty. They weren’t meant to be the Everest of woodworking, they were meant to hold two pieces of wood together.
You’ll notice in this video I use a whole lot of fancy tools. I use them because I have them and I am proud to have purchased them from boutique toolmakers supporting their families with small-batch tools of extremely high quality. I’ll go through the list of tools I use and love at the end of this video, but as I mentioned at the beginning of this video, you can cut dovetails with 9 basic tools that most people already have, in some rusty form or another, in their garage.

The best online class.
Anne, you are the happiest wood worker on UA-cam. Excellent job!
Concise, clear, and thorough. You are a natural teacher.
Really enjoyed watching someone work with their left hand. I rarely see that on any training videos. Thanks!
I love this tutorial! Thanks for showing how easy it is to do dovetails by hand. As you say, it isn't difficult, it just takes time. Blessings to you.
Thanks Anne. Woodcraft is an awesome place to visit. It's a one stop shop for all my woodworking needs.
Me too!! Also a great place to go to get questions answered!
I love that your puppy is just calmly sitting in that antique drawer as you explain dovetails. 🙂
He's a good boy :)
Brilliant. Simply brilliant. Thanks you for sharing your expertise.
Thank You both for taking the time to do this video! Nice to see both of you, and Anne of course while you are playing, carving or singing... I'm loving the your area and of course your chair.
Thanks for being here!
I bought a claw footed antique dresser and cut about 1/3 of the width away to make a bathroom vanity with an antique looking vessel sink. I kept the original drawer joints on one side and copied the hand drawn and cut dovetails for the others using similar techniques you presented only the pins were very skinny with an odd angle. The result was great and looks like it was made like that 120 years ago better and cheaper than anything I could buy new. I made accessories out of the excess wood for the bathroom.
That's awesome! Good on ya!
A cute puppy and beautifully cut dovetails. Two of my favorite things. ❤️
I do love the old time look of dovetail joinery.
Great job, Anne, looks fantastic. 👍
Thank you Bill!
beautiful wood work and puppy it is great to watch some one who is always smiling it helps breathing up the day
best video I have seen on dovetail making. Thank you
So glad you enjoyed it!
The tip about the cellphone light is GENIUS!!! Thanks for the tip i cant wait to try it! :D
Glad you like it! Let me know how it goes for you!
What beautiful work! And of course, it always helps to start/end a video with lots of puppy love! Thanks so much for sharing your ideas and suggestions, and of course watching your new four legged friend grow! Absolutely love the look/design of dovetails....so incredibly beautiful.
Thanks so much Jackie!
Working to a standard, not a timetable. A true craftsperson.
great tutorial... Man, Rigby is just GROWING! love his little dog star on his chest
He sure is. Wish he’d slow down a little.
Awesome work Anne! Thanks for the info! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
I am *_very_*_ impressed_ with your concise, well-detailed, explanatory instructions.
For 30 years, a huge part of my job was writing instructions for reproducing software errors. My goal was to write them in such a way that there were no ambiguities, saving the recipient from having to contact me to answer questions or doubts.
I really appreciate that! As a writer myself, it is definitely a priority to cut out the fluff wherever I can. It's a delicate balance for sure.
Wow! Anne makes it look so easy. Which it's not until you've done it a LOT. But what I really liked where the hints I never thought about. Good video. But practice makes perfect.
Great tutorial. Thanks Anne!
You are adorable! Love your enthusiasm, and, you know what you are doing--that's truly refreshing. Keep 'em coming, I'll be watching. For what it's worth, when setting a plane down on the bench, place it on it's side, so you don't damage or dull the iron. Even LI messes that one up. Blessings,
Thanks for the support Craig! While it's always good to establish positive habits in the shop, planes being set on their face or on their side isn't actually super important, as long as you keep your workbench top clear of metal shavings and other abrasive debris.
Great video Anne as always. I’ve been trying to get a hold of doing hand cut dovetails recently and I definitely learned some new tricks from your video. Thanks
So glad to hear it!
Excellent video as always! Love your approach to your videos. Clean, concise, and beautiful! Keep up the great work and living life to it's fullest!
Thanks so much Bob!
That was cool, I always knew of dovetails, but not how to make them, thank you for making it understandable
Thanks for watching!
You are certainly very inspiring, not only for your handcrafting abilities, but for your decision to live on a farm and grow-harvest your own food! Congratulations all the way from Monterrey Mexico. Sincerely, Chuy.
Thanks Chuy!
Entertaining and informative as usual.
Great video Ann, and thank you for the down to earth approach. Cheers
Thank you!
Anne, I view a large amount of UA-cam for educational projects. Your video is one of the best that I have seen. It is extremely detailed and thank you for doing such a great job. Please keep the videos coming enjoy watching them.
Thanks Eddie! So glad it was helpful.
I don't understand why anyone would give you a thumbs down. Great to see another woman woodworking. I find when I cut my tail board, I set the angle of the board to my dovetail angle. That keeps my saw plumb when sawing, rather than at an angle.
Thank you so much for the support! Try as we may, some folks will never be happy ;)
I love to see the passion you put into your art.
Thank you!
Awesome! Love the T-shirt Rigby is a great model lol
Excellent video. I never thought of a cell phone as a woodworking tool. You don't have to use dovetails for these joints. Any matching design would work. I've been thinking about using a Forstner bit and coping saw to make some oval & odd shapes. Stars or card suits would be spectacular for a small box.
Great video. Thanks
You have some great methods there. I'm 64 and my eyes struggle with these jobs . When I was and engineer I had super 20/20 eyesight, and i miss it, glasses never seem to make up for it for these tasks in my case at least. These methods look helpful especially your use of a phone light. I bought furniture for our dining room some 40 years ago and we still have it. It was made by an old company in London and silly money. The dovetails are awful but it's still solid. I wonder at times given modern adhesives how much stronger a dovetail is compared to a box/finger joint. I like that marking gauge and plan to make one just like it. Thank you.
Thanks so much! Man, I'm sorry to hear your eyes are failing you, I hate it when our bodies don't cooperate.
Outstanding, thanks for sharing!
Exerlent video tutorial, thank you 🙂
Thank you. I really enjoyed the video. Learnt quite a bit.
So glad to hear it! Thanks for watching!
Great work on the dovetails Anne! Thanks for sharing the video with us.👌😎👍JP
Thanks JP!
Your very welcome Anne! Have a great week!😎
Great vid again Anne Take Care
Thanks Jim!
Amazing you can saw with your right hand too!
I'm ambidextrous ;)
Puppy at the beginning? Automatic like 😋😍😘 thanks for your tips Anne
Thanks so much! He's pretty cute huh?
At about 9:50 the camera gets a close up angle. That was very helpful. I just wish it happened sooner. The verbal explanation was spot-on. Thanks for a pretty good video.
Glad you found it helpful! It's a constant battle using a tripod to film, but always working on trying to improve. Thanks for the feedback!
Awesome video I learned a lot, your a great teacher. :)
Glad it was helpful!
Saw your video was on the Woodcraft site. Congrats! That should really amp up traffic.
Love that marking knife. Reminds me of Dr. Grant's raptor claw from Jurassic Park 😁
Such a good tutorial
Thank you! Glad to hear it!
Like before watching video. Cose im sure it worth it 👍
Wow. You are a real master. My handsaws never obey me. If I have to cut straight the saw goes everywhere but straight. If I have to cut to the left the saw goes right or too much left. I need more practice. Or time to practise. Or the patience to make time to practise. Thanks for sharing. You show it is possible to do.
Saying that: I've seen many times running athletes 100 m in less than 10 seconds. So I know it is possible. But I can't :-)
Btw: this video is much too short: I could watch hours to this fine technique of yours.
Check out my video on sawing techniques, hopefully we can get those cuts straightened out.
Great video, OMG cute puppy
Dovetail Rigby drawer 😍
NiiiCE!!! Great tutorial, thanks!! (Rigby Puppy!!!!)
Rugby is so adorable! I recently have purchased a dovetail jig that a youtube wood worker developed. I've not yet gotten a chance to create with it but I look forward to reporting back when I do. Happy Easter to you, the Hubby, and all the farm critters!
I can't wait to see what you create bud!
Thanks John! Rigby is so cute I just wish he would grow a little slower!!
@@katzmosestools speak of the devil! Anne, Mr. Moses is the one who designed the Dove Tail Jig I have. I'm actually going to be building a tool box for my uncle.
Your bench dog looks so cute!
He sure is!
Just ordered one of the sterling guides you are using. I had never seen one before! Love it!
Oh awesome! I'll call Chris and tell him where to send my commission check. hahahaha
@@AnneofAllTrades He sent a questionnaire.....I listed you as the reason for buying, now tell him to send you more swag ;)
Crazy - Eye Wood Guy I doubt there’s any swag for me in it, I bought the tools I’ve got, but I do appreciate the excuse to reach out and tease him ;)
Excellent!
Many thanks!
This is very useful, thanks!!
Glad to hear it!
Beautiful Lab pup, Anne your are awesome you are very talented and craftsmanship is absolutely amazing take care my friend god bless from the 🇺🇸🇺🇸🦞🦞🐊🐊 Cajun 🐊🐊🦞🦞🇺🇸🇺🇸
Great teaching, and love the "tattoo" on Rigby's chest. 😊
That’s why we picked him!
I too am left handed ✊ thanks Anne
A simple " LIKE" button doesn't do you justice.
Awww thanks Lee!
Best stock dog I ever had was a lab loved the dog
Lester Grayson ...No breed can smile like a lab. They can steal your heart like no other. I'm very sorry you lost yours I know the pain you must have felt. We lost ours when I was a kid. I'm 65 now and think about him all the time. He was the best friend I ever had and it still hurts to this day. I'm tearing up as I write this.
They sure have a way of pulling at our heartstrings!
I like these videos. The enjoy the day to day life videos too but I stay for the builds.
Really appreciate that!
1:7 fits nicely between 1:6 and 1:8. I would use that on hardwood or pine.
Totally!
yeah but you....your video start with you and an amazing charming puppy on your lapses....how do you want other bearded guys that are trying to teach us dove tails to get to that level...that is why i am watching you right now....your skills and smile...and the puppy...the goat...the donkey...etc....just to make you smile a little...still you are so talented....and brilliant...thank you..
You are too kind. Thanks for tuning in!
That's a lovely smile.
awesome
Nice job Annabelle, I agree with the the comments below, you need a “love” button instead of a like button:)
Thanks Daniel!
Thanks
Just found your channel. Love it! Best intro to dovetails video I have found.
BTW, what brand are those sweatshirts you wear?
That dog is like "Who is mum talking to? There's no one here".
haha true
Nice vídeo 👍👍
Thanks so much!!
What a nice job Anne!
Anne, where did you find that dovetail marking gauge? I like that the top aligns with the side. The one I have, after you set the side profile, you gotta mark the top with a square.
What is your preferred way for getting the excess glue off?
Great video. You mention one of your tools you used is a kerf starter. Do you have a demonstration on how it’s used.
I think I may have shown it in my handsaw secrets video.
Spacing always gives me fits. Could you lengthen the demonstration of the divider technique? I want to learn more about your method.
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!
Christopher Schwartz has great video on "Laying out Dovetails" I'll find it very helpful.
Hi Anne , on your fast list of 9 tools you need to cut dovetails ( 1:30) you missed 1 -- an adorable puppy supervisor to oversee the work and make
sure your doing it right :-). your new friend looks beautiful & very cuddly !!
Hahaha very important indeed.
Anne, i like your new dog!
Me too :)
You started with the interior face toward you in the vice (2:34). Later the interior face is away from you. Why the change? Start with the exterior face toward you so the position of the board does not change during all marking and cutting. I like the use of phone light to view spacing and double check of squareness before assembly.
That's a really nice logo sign in the window. ;)
A really cool guy made it for me :)
When first laying out your tails how much meat do you leave on the edge of your board before measuring out the rest of the tails?
That's an Aww-inspiring demonstration... 🙂
...
...get it?
...cos the puppy is Aww 😍
....
...imma go home now... 😬
😁😁😁
Hi Anne, I love your videos, thanks for share with us your talent.
Please someone can tell me the opening music name? I'd like to search it and listen the whole music, please.
Thanks so much! It's been a while since I made this video, I honestly don't remember the music.
Size your chisel to the cut if you have dovetail chisels. Regular or beveled edge chisels can/will bruise the sidewalls of the tails and pins.
Rigby seems to be looking around for a chew toy. Cute shirt Rigby.
That’s a great point.
Wow! You can saw with either hand.
Annebidextrous!
Lots of good advice here. Thanks. This is the first time I've seen the special "short pin" on the bottom side of the drawer. I assume it is to hide the drawer bottom. Can you provide a link to a clear drawing or picture so I see how this is done? Thanks.
Check out my article on building a whiskey cabinet on the cover of woodworker’s journal June issue. It’s got everything you should need to know ;)
I like the video. Where did you get the bench hook miter stops?
from Bad Axe tools, though I have a blog post on my website showing you how to make your own! www.anneofalltrades.com
SUPER !
Great info! I know it's all just joinery but the first time I cut dovetails by hand and they fit, that was when I first felt like a "real" woodworker. It's a very satisfying moment. Also ... who's your fuzzy new friend?
That's Rigby! New farm boss extraordinaire.
Hi Lefty I need more detail or info on the spacing when using the 2 dividers . Thanks
Rob Cosman does a great video on explaining this technique :)
where did you get tour pup from? thanks
Anne great work as always. I am looking at getting a tiny wood stove like you have and curious if you have the 5k or 4k and does your shop get too hot? Any issues?
I actually have both, one in the tiny house and one in the shop and I prefer the larger model because you don’t have to cut the wood down as much or stoke it as often. The shop isn’t super well insulated so it’s tough to get it too hot but the stoves are very efficient.
Hi Anne, love Rigby what a beauty!! The little white star on his chest is perfect. Very classy videos. Thanks so much for sharing. M. K. S.
Thank you! We chose Rigby because his white star reminded us of our pup Abbey who recently passed away. He is a good boy with very big shoes to fill :)
I love this video! I have watched all of the dovetail videos and this is the best What brand of dovetail saw do you use?
Jane Collie I missed that, too.
I need more demonstrations with the puppy please. If you could train the pup to cut dove tails too that would be best :D
Sounds like a plan!
Your puppy is so cute... so what was this video about again.
Great video. But the same question always arises, when watching this and other videos. What is the measure or opening of each measure?
I’m not sure I understand your question?
@@AnneofAllTrades sorry. At 3:25 what is the opening of the divider? How You calculate ir?
ua-cam.com/video/YkbSB3Ks_fw/v-deo.html
A fantastic guide! But I did have 1 part where I was a bit confused. You state you like to make the waste area in your tails to have an opening that matches a specific chisel size exactly, closest to the baseline. But then you state to only take about 1/2 or small amounts off at a time with each chisel stroke. If your chisel size is maxed out already, how can you move it forward inside of the gap ?
You use two different chisels ;)
@@AnneofAllTrades I figured that was the "duh" answer, just thought you were saying you could use only that chisel and it threw me a little bit.
