Still a bad game but apparently less so in Japanese.

I'm happy that someone is highlighting the most technical category (that isnt low% but I'm sure that's tas only anyways lol) watching the vid made me realize samus' power suit color palette kinda looks like apple sauce.
Super Metroid has some cool Low% categories, there are actually multiple ways to finish 14% with No Major Glitches. The most common one is Low% Ice, which has been featured twice at GDQ, at SGDQ 2014 and SGDQ 2017. 13% has been done by humans with simultaneous Left+Right (which enables underwater walljumps without Gravity Suit). When Out of Bounds is allowed, you can kill all of the bosses with only 12%. This has been done by a couple of people. Memory corruption allows for completing the game with only 4 item pickups. It's even possible to erase items from your inventory to finish with 0% (which is where my avatar comes from).

Really fascinating deep dive. I'm amazed by the creativity, skill, and determination that went into figuring out and pulling off this insanity. Also, the message of inclusiveness and encouragement in the community culture regarding the baby skip discovery was a great moment. Great video. 😄
Super metroid is such a cool game. For years ive loved watching speedruns, playing through it, learning tricks, doing randomizers, all that. There is so much more to this game then what was even covered in this video, the depth is insane. There are so many glitches that are tas or challenge run only, some of which I learned thanks to randomizers and especially puzzle hacks like Containment Chamber, Contamination, and Kero. The movement is also just amazing, the only game I've played that feels better to control is Hollow Knight. Some of the other Speedrun categories are still really cool, my favorite is low%, and just how many combinations of items you can do the lowest possible % with. SM is honestly a sandbox game This was a great video too, Definitely subbing Also, apple sauce
Very cool analysis and Zeni's and Zoast's commentary is always appreciated! I watched Zeni's WR RBO run a few days after he uploaded it on his UA-cam and it's still one of the most beautifully executed runs in any of the Super Metroid categories I've ever had the pleasure of watching. Thank you for much for uploading this very riveting breakdown of the showcased tricks!
Just wanted to say, this video is so well edited and explains just enough to make everything easy to understand. As a person that has watched many Super Metroid speedruns before, even I sometimes Im baffled at just the complexity of this game. So anyways just banger video man, Apple Sauce
Shame I just had lunch as some apple sauce would hit the spot. But what a fantastic video. Please consider doing more of this style - your commentary lends itself well to this kind of format.
Interesting AF video! looks like it can be a bit saucy and the metroid kinda looks like an apple, but yea REALLY cool tech to have spelled out like it's "simple"
I play SM randomizers from time to time and I watch a lot of Zeni and Oats runs bc i love metroid so much and both of them are excellent runners of the game. The insanity that is RBO is so amazing to watch. Thank you for this opportunity to showcase a great game with a greater category and an even greater community!
This game is a technological marvel, and its influence exists far beyond its SNES rectangular cartridge borders, even beyond its own series. I've always thought Samus' deep technical prowess in Melee is a direct result of SM, even down to things like her being able to wall jump, a trait reserved almost exclusively for fast, agile characters with quick fall speeds otherwise. Fantastic video, editing was on point and Zeni's commentary/explanations were as well. Went great with my bowl of (evil)apple sauce.
Excellent video! Zoast and Zeni are such great ambassadors for this game! I can only encourage players to at least perform an RBO run once. This showcawses the very hard and very fast RBO, but there is avery well documented routem with many safeties, that though still difficult, is really accessible to any player with the basics of speedrunning. I am not by any means an excellent Super Metroid runner, but I did it ! Skipping Apple Sauce is the biggest timesave
Absolutely agree! There are a lot of extra e tanks and ammo that you can grab that make it easier. Slower but more accessible to a larger group of people. Anyone interested in speed running this game should try this category! It’s such a fun yet challenging category
I was not planning on actively watching this whole video but yall kept me glued to the screen the whole time. I had no idea how deep the Super Metroid speed runs went considering I haven't played the game since the 90's.
Ive never been into "speed running" games, but I recently introduced my son to this game, and now this video pops on my timeline and grabs my attention. I am BLOWN AWAY at the community, knowledge, effort and skill on display here. Keep it up.

I like speed run videos but i LOVED your explanations of the tricks. Usually ppl just glance over really complicated tricks but you say "wait, let me explain you this with a video of the trick" amazing content.
I really love the CRT filter you used; it's pretty convincing. That, combined with your general way of speaking, almost made this feel like a 90s news report or documentary. Great job! Thanks for making this apple sauce! I mean video.

Kudos for the runner!
Talk about Apple Sauce. This might be one of the rare full detail speed run follow video I have ever watch begining to end breaking things down. It was really cool seeing all little details and tricks used.
This was an incredible watch, especially as a Metroid nut! Having the experts there, your own explanations, and the expert editing made this a great experience!
Putting the examples into the video is incredible. Nice work editing everything together to make a coherent video about this, what seems impossible speedrun. Bravo.
Yo!! I Was eating apple sauce with lunch while watching this amazing video! Thanks for your fantastic editing and run down of one of my favorite games.
Props to you DB for putting this video together. Well made. Very well played by Zeni and informative commentary. And hello to the ghost of zoast who is still the goat.
11:45 This is the first useful use of "crystal flash" that I've ever heard of, beyond, "here's a secret technique, have you tried it?" I never could figure out a time where spending super missiles saved me time vs. just farming energy or running to a recharge station.
It's useful use is if you have ammo but not health, so it's mostly good for people that aren't spending resources but are taking hits. Players that have managed to scour and collect stuff, but are still struggling with something. Pretty specific niche for such a person to also know the trick.
I seem to remember reading about that secret technique in Nintendo Power or something and thinking, this is really cool.. I have plenty of other resources but am almost dead, bam, back to full health. I seem to remember reading that there were a total of 4 such "secret techniques" you could use, but I don't remember what the other 3 were or if I ever managed to pull them off.
Amazing to discover that this idea is even possible. I'd like to see another interview where you speed run everything out of order such as defeating draygon first, ridley second, kraid third and phantoon last. 💯
i love when speedruners took on thing we though at the time as was TAS only like reverse boos order, it's like some people decided to create a new version of apple sauce like if there were none before and that's crazy.
Apple Sauce :] this was so fascinating to watch and even came at a perfect time. My dad and I finished Super Metroid again just a few days ago. There's really something different about this game and its community
Any part of this RBO run would completely melt the brain of 13-year-old me, playing Super Metroid when it came out. lol, absolutely love Zeni's RBO shirt btw, that's fantastic. 🤣👌 Crystal Flash is the ONE INSTANCE where I called the Nintendo Tip Line. I saw it in the attract demo and was like "wat." so I called the tip line to find out wtf I just saw. I will never possess the discipline required for spike suit... And I've come to terms with that. 😌 oooo, I've got some apple sauce in the fridge... Thanks for reminding me. That'd really hit the spot right about now! 😋
There are some insane tricks that require frame perfect inputs or minutes of careful maneuvering, but there are also easy tricks that are immensely satisfying. That triple frame perfect + 50/50 trick in the beginning can also be done with a damage boost if you don't mind taking a little more time and damage, and that's something even I can do.
I played this game when it first came out as a kid, and discovered things like wall jumping, shinesparking, and the crystal flash on my own, and I was absolutely giddy. Seeing these speed runners exploit those and so much more makes me relive that giddiness and I love it so freaking much.
I loved this video so much, it's mind blowing the amount of details that goes in any speedrun, thank you very much for bringing it for us and thanks a bunch Zeni and Zoast!!! Apple Sauce
I used to be sad that no run used crystal flash. Then some mad folks got together and worked out time saves from it in RBO, and now I'm happy. (The use of X Factor on Ridley is just pure icing on the cake)
I tried doing an RBO run years ago trying to do it. The hell runs aren't easy but doable, doing anything in lower norfair is hard but ridley is just the wall that made me stop, I tried it for an hour until I put a save state at the door and gave up after another. It's nuts how world class speedrunners can do the full run in under an hour.
Yo... Dr4gon, this is pretty frickin fantastic. I mean Zeni and Zoast do a lot of heavy lifting for the content - they are great and really know their stuff -- but this is some epic level editing and production. Keep it up! EDIT: Apple sauce is part of a healthy speedrunning diet.

Really fascinating deep dive. I'm amazed by the creativity, skill, and determination that went into figuring out and pulling off this insanity. Also, the message of inclusiveness and encouragement in the community culture regarding the baby skip discovery was a great moment. Great video. 😄
Always cool seeing metroid getting some love, especially with Zoast and Zeni on to share some knowledge.
SM is honestly a sandbox game
This was a great video too, Definitely subbing
Also, apple sauce
Bro this was so neat to watch. Thank you DB!
Please consider doing more of this style - your commentary lends itself well to this kind of format.
excellent video, great editing and extra clips by dragonblitz, great explanations by zeni and zoast.
You know, for the longest time I thought it was a Mach ball, because you store your horizontal move speed and go the speed of sound. Good to know!
Ive never been into "speed running" games, but I recently introduced my son to this game, and now this video pops on my timeline and grabs my attention. I am BLOWN AWAY at the community, knowledge, effort and skill on display here. Keep it up.
Wow, super well made video - I love the visual explanations of the tricks! Now I may be biased, but this is genuinely one of the best breakdown video's I've seen of a speedrun.
Wow, thanks!
Never expected for you to do a video interview on Super Metroid. Your editing and commentary is superb!
Woo - watched Zeni's stream while you guys were recording for this. Cool vid!
amazingly high quality video here. Thank you so much for making this! Other categories would also be awesome to see breakdowns of too!
Amazing editing and great explanation for this intriguing category!
Fantastic videos DB! So interesting to hear Zeni and Zoast explain this amazing run.
dude super metroid is actually so hardcore, ive just recently started playing it but this is mindblowing
I mean video.
this was outstandingly well done. great chat and the visuals really made it come together. quality applesauce. thanks for putting it together.
Dude, this video is absolutely FLAWLESS!!! ❤
SM’s RBO is super underrated, great category and great video :)
Amazing video & great idea! Definetly a fan of this kind of content that includes other metroidvanias :) can't wait for more in the future, keep up the good work DB!
Amazing! I've just (finally) finished Super Metroid and thought "holy s***" when I saw the title and thought that people are able to do this. The video is incredible, very well explained and easy to follow. It was very interesting to learn so much stuff and awesome to know how technically you can get and break the game in a nice way. Kudos for the runner!
So awesome. I'm grateful this game still has so much traction after all this time.
Talk about Apple Sauce. This might be one of the rare full detail speed run follow video I have ever watch begining to end breaking things down. It was really cool seeing all little details and tricks used.
Never played Super Metroid but this was awesome to watch, learned a lot

This is the first useful use of "crystal flash" that I've ever heard of, beyond, "here's a secret technique, have you tried it?"
I never could figure out a time where spending super missiles saved me time vs. just farming energy or running to a recharge station.
It's useful use is if you have ammo but not health, so it's mostly good for people that aren't spending resources but are taking hits.
Players that have managed to scour and collect stuff, but are still struggling with something. Pretty specific niche for such a person to also know the trick.
Probably for non-speedrunners to have more breathing room.
Great video, the guy who explained everything is awesome.
This is a great way to see speed runs; broken down move by move by the runners themselves is really cool!
Love the t-shirt with the bosses in the run’s order. Nice touch.
Amazing video, visualizations and explanations. Great job!
I love speedrun explained videos. Also, I’ve been told that Joel likes Apple Sauce
"The last Apple Sauce is in captivity, the galaxy is at peace"
It's so sad that Ridley stole Samus' Apple Sauce when she was little. Completely scarring her for life.
22:40 "So that was a good fight" hahahha! Love it! Also his refraining from using "the" in front of the items is interesting....
Crystal Flash is the ONE INSTANCE where I called the Nintendo Tip Line. I saw it in the attract demo and was like "wat." so I called the tip line to find out wtf I just saw.
I will never possess the discipline required for spike suit... And I've come to terms with that. 😌
oooo, I've got some apple sauce in the fridge...
Awesome video, I've never played Super Metroid but I had a blast watching this, really informative and well edited!
I played this game when it first came out as a kid, and discovered things like wall jumping, shinesparking, and the crystal flash on my own, and I was absolutely giddy. Seeing these speed runners exploit those and so much more makes me relive that giddiness and I love it so freaking much.
3:47 Love the THPS special trick sound effect added. Takes me back.
35:37 But wait, did you save the animals??
The amount of knowledge the community has accumulated is truly impressive, and it all has been the result of passion.
Nice! Another banger video, DB!
I loved this video so much, it's mind blowing the amount of details that goes in any speedrun, thank you very much for bringing it for us and thanks a bunch Zeni and Zoast!!! Apple Sauce
Great to learn how this run works!
That was really well done with the explanations for people who don't already know the details and intricacies. GG! ;)
This deserves Al Gore Rhythm’s push
I used to be sad that no run used crystal flash. Then some mad folks got together and worked out time saves from it in RBO, and now I'm happy.
(The use of X Factor on Ridley is just pure icing on the cake)
I know, right?! They not only managed to find a use for crystal flash, but also another useless secret technique!
@@bluedistortions X factor gets used in a lot of categories though? It's by far and away the most valuable beam combo.
Great video man, well done. You're good at this style of video. More of this, please.
Love the use of music from some of Super Metroid's ROM hacks, they're so good and don't get enough love.
Yes the main channel lives on!!
Love these vids DB, hope to see more of them! Grats on the channel/speedruns/randos/all
The knowledge and dedication in this video is MIND BLOWING. Thank you everyone!
Awesome video bro, Great questions and great breakdowns. Can’t wait to see more from you.
This is the most insane thing I have ever seen in speed running.
We love the algo
Great video was really cool to hear some of the finer details
