By 1997 Britpop was winding down. But Brit Rock had a new wave of bands that preferred heaviness to cribbing from the Beatles. Amongst this lot were Feeder, framed as the plucky underdogs. At first dubbed the “British Smashing Pumpkins”, Feeder hit the scene delivering grunge-affected heavy pop gems imbued with heart, charm and nostalgia for better days. Though they would score twenty Top 40 singles, their 2001 hit about a brand new car would be the one that remains glued in the national consciousness, in spite of their frontman’s enduring indifference to it. This is New British Canon, and this is the story of “Buck Rogers.”

It's funny cos Feeder where fairly popular in the UK but were always less so cos they had a bit of a mainstream American style whereas British Indie was bigger at the time. I'm surprised they weren't more popular in the US.

Feeder had one of the best sets I have ever seen played by a band. It was Leeds Festival 2007, Slipknot were due on before Feeder, but Joey Jordison had broken his foot, and noone in the crowd were sure if they were going to appear or not. Avenged Sevenfold were on beforehand, but had the flu, so only played 4 songs (they got some poor girl up from the crowd to sing "A Little Piece of Heaven" for them, who promptly started greeting her eyes out - hilarious, but still felt sorry for the lass). After a lot of anticipation, instead of Slipknot, Feeder come onstage to an onslaught of booing from a crowd of raging Slipknot fans (admittedly putting Feeder in the middle of what was definitely a very 'metal' day might not have been the best booking.)
"Sorry, we aren't Slipknot, but let's have fun".
They played one of the best sets I have ever ever seen, and within 2 or 3 songs had completely turned the whole crowd around, which is not only a testament to their completely underappreciated back catalogue ('the band you know the songs for, but don't know the band who played them'), but their sort of grungey heavy roots.
Metallica finished that night out, but I still think Feeder was the highlight of the whole night by far.

I’m curious if your disputing his version of events or just his recollection/opinion of their performance.
I would think that if his recollection of turning that crowd around then regardless of intoxication or either of your opinions about the gig, I would argue that there was ‘something’ to it and that that “something” probably wasn’t garbage.

You're not wrong mate, a large majority of that set from Reading is on youtube and in a way you can tell the crowd are not at all what you would expect at a feeder gig (Circle pits going on during "Just the way i'm feeling" which is actually hilarious). But it shows their flexibility and professionalism as a band that they did win over the crowd and arguably made for one of the most unexpected success stories in the festivals history. The crowd just totally popped off to songs like "Shatter" "Buck Rogers" "Just the way i'm feeling" "Lost and found" and of course "Just a day" A real testament to their wide palette of influence in their sound as a band

One of the best things about Feeder is that they have those top 3 or 4 songs everyone knows but the rest of their top flight singles and some b sides are absolutely beautifully crafted songs. They've also had a hand in many different types of song and indie to rock genres. No band I know can go from Descend to something like Forget About Tomorrow, which is probably their most underrated track and I think Grant's favourite.

I'm pleased you mentioned Gran Turismo as I discovered Feeder through the original game and especially the song Sweet 16. That song is a gem. Thus began my journey with Feeder. Echo Park released at the perfect time for me, I was 17 and I listened to that album so many times and couldn't get enough of them. Then John Lee's death and I was utterly shocked. I look back at "Comfort In Sound" and love the album now but at the time I wasn't ready for it. This was perhaps the first musicians death I really felt. It was a painful listen and coupled with a live performance in 2002 (I think) which I didn't enjoy put me off listening to Feeder for a good few years. Between the likes of Buck Rogers, Sweet 16, Picture Of Perfect Youth and High I came back to Feeder and greatly appreciated Come Back Around and newer albums.
Thank you for this video. I'm off to listen to some Feeder now!

I sometimes forget how many great songs Feeder made, and they are greatly under appreciated, when you think of great late 90s to early 00s bands you rarely hear them mentioned but you put on a Feeder playlist and you always find yourself bobbing your head, Grant Nicholas has a great ear for a hook. Despite a tragic story they somehow continue to put out great music today, when a lot of other bands have broken up a long time ago.

Sooo happy to see a spotlight on Feeder. Been a fan for over 20(!) years now and they are, as all their fans point out, criminally underrated. I lost count of the number of times I've listened through Echo Park and the Singles compilation front-to-back years ago. The last couple of albums have been nice but I'm more excited for the way Torpedo is shaping up.
FWIW, early songs of theirs (Tangerine, Sweet 16, Chicken on a Bone) appeared on the original _Gran Turismo_ OST as well, albeit not as the intro track like that different mix of Just A Day is on GT3 (cued in just after the coolest opening sequence of any racing game ever). They should put a couple of Torpedo tracks on GT7 that also launches in March!

Loved this one, I only really got into Feeder two years ago through the lockdown, but blimey what a fantastic band they are! I was doing a bit of research into Britpop/Post-Britpop bands, because at the time I was really into bands like Oasis, Stereophonics, Snow Patrol, Coldplay, Blur, Muse, Keane, Travis, Radiohead and The Verve and I wanted to listen to a band that was similar to them. After listening to a few of their albums on Spotify/YT etc, I found that they were a hybrid between American Rock and British Rock and that was very fascinating, so of course they started off sounding more like Nirvana and The Smashing Pumpkins, then to bands like Blink-182 and Green Day however after Jon Lee passed away in 2002, Feeder opted for more of a Post-Britpop sound akin to Coldplay, Oasis, Keane, Travis and Snow Patrol for their albums, Comfort in Sound and Pushing The Senses but then afterwards went back to sounding like American Rock again. Moreover I could see how songs like High, Buck Rogers and Just A Day were very popular in America, as they had the grunge/pop-punk sound. Then of course anthemic songs like Comfort In Sound, Just The Way I'm Feeling and Feeling a Moment all being really popular over here in the UK. Just The Way I'm Feeling and Feeling a Moment are their best songs imo, plus they're my favourites as well. While Buck Rogers is an amazing song, I reckon Feeder look at it as their 'Wonderwall', a song that's way more popular compared to the others but also to an extent overrated as they have better songs than that in their catalogue.
Either way the best thing about Feeder are their versatility of rock styles, being able to switch up between Post-Grunge, Post-Britpop and Pop-Punk not many bands from that era were able to emulate that as successfully as Feeder did. That being said though I find it criminal that they're so often overlooked in the rock scene, they surely deserve the same recognition as the likes of Coldplay and Oasis. For me, Feeder are definitely one of my favourite bands of all time.

I saw Feeder quite a bit back in the day, including their first gig at Reading 02 after losing their drummer which was quite a moment. They always seemed like good guys. They had a big gay following as well which is a little known fact. Echo Park is a great album, but they actually seemed to be victims of their own success imo. The height of their popularity came in their later years with a lot of soft rock tracks and it all got a little bit... Hollyoaks. Their music was all over TV and radio for a period and for me it was very bland compared to their earlier stuff and I think a lot of people just lost interest. This seemed to happen to a ton of bands around the early 00's though so they weren't alone. British indie seemed to lose it's edge throughout that period, for me at least.

Personally the late '90s and early 2000s aren't a time I look back fondly on for rock music. It's my opinion that Hanson killed the '90s singlehandedly with the release of MMMBOP. It would be excellent to see a video on Killing Joke or Godflesh from you! Two criminally underrated British bands ;D

Based on the choices you put in the poll, I had a feeling that the video would be about this. I couldn't choose because I have a some loyalty towards A and The Wildhearts, but out of all the songs, Buck Rogers is definitely the most anthemic. It's definitely a huge singalong.
As always, great video and perfect choice of subject matter.
PS: Love the mention of A and including the Old Folks video.

1:53 footage of them playing a haunt we regularly enjoyed playing in Western Norwich called The Oval Rockhouse. Feeder also played Fat Pauly's in the city and my former band Spot were asked to come and support them at Norwich Waterfront during their "High/Polythene (repackaged)" tour. They travelled up from London, fresh from appearing on the Ch5 Jack Doherty show that evening. A great night with our labelmates Sod's Law also adding support that evening....

Grant was the guitar player I got interested in using capos through and tuning to drop D. The song 'My Perfect Day' was very influential and we used to cover 'Insomnia' and 'Yesterday Went Too Soon' in an old covers band. I got turned onto the band by a girl I fancied giving me a mixtape! Lol - Ahhh teenage bliss, I am getting old.

‘Buck Rogers’ was my first contact, but I really Discovered Feeder through their interviews with various British guitar magazines, often celebrating Grant’s love of Jazzmasters, or their custom made instruments (‘Combat’?), and then started exploring more of their music. Liked, rather than loved, their albums, but I wish I’d seen them live - that’s still on my bucket list...

Found you via the Paramore video and I am so happy to see some Feeder representation. I've been a huge fan of them since I heard them on Gran Turismo 1 (Sweet 16 and Shade IIRC). They're definitely underrated, but they have the most solid fanbase of any band.

Actually , thanks to Gran Turismo 1, many already knew about Feeder. As an 8 year old listening to Sweet16 on a racing game felt like a breath of fresh air, because videogame soundtracks in the 90s were just starting to have that edge (GT1 had Ash, Garbage and Feeder, Wipeout 2097 had Prodigy, Chemical Brothers and Fluke), the landscape was changing and although definitely not representative of Feeder's body of work, Swim is a really good album (EP), Chicken On A Bone, Descend, Sweet16, Shade and others are incredible tracks. Haven't kept up with Feeder since Renegades (felt like the music was becoming a bit derivative), but Torpedo actually sounds pretty good so I'll definitely check it out! Great video

@ Roman Kotas - try their a-side album, Picture of Perfect Youth. Feeder have released some incredible non-album songs. Yesterday Went Too Soon is my personal favourite, however, as it's the album that got me into them. Renegades is also very good. Pushing The Senses and Silent Cry are my least favourite, although like all Feeder songs they contain some great tracks.

I saw a show almost every week in the 90's from Jeff Buckley to Lush to Nirvana to The Lemonheads to Fugazi etc. and practically studied the Alternative Press for new bands and music. I like to think I had a pretty damn good "ear to the ground" when it came to music here in the states and especially in England. I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS BAND. Shame, some of their stuff seems pretty cool, but yeah, you can hear the Pumpkins influence.

I used to lieten to kerrang constantly as a kid a few years after buck rogers released, you couldnt escape it in the uk? Weirdest thing is you barely seen or heard their other songs. I think there were two other lighter songs that got popular and one very memorable video where the lead singer is walking down the street as the video falls away. They always had something fun about their music, i can definitely hear the smashing pumpkins in the older songs so much now.
